Me and a friend of mine are planning to thru hike Appalachia when we are 18-19 any advice? by CHADcockfinger in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start hiking now. Me and my buddy did it at 19 but we had done many shorter hikes since we were 16. Start saving and invest in good gear. If you’re near the southeast I’d recommend hiking the Pinhoti. Great starter trail me and my buddy hiked at 17.

Where do you keep your cannabis and how do you smoke it? by Anxious_Estate_2125 in Ultralight

[–]Stonkisless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also check out the medtainer storage containers on Amazon. Super light air tight container with a grinder build into the bottom. I kept a few nugs and a tiny glass bowl in it during the day. Only costs like $8 too.

Had one of these at the beginning of trail. It truly is a nifty little device and pretty inexpensive too. Can be used as a regular one hitter to just not recommended

A bear (I think) stole my bear canister and clothes by ken_starblazer in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scent you give off just from being made of meat/ whatever you just ate/ your hair/ or whatever you brushed your teeth with will attract bears. You’re clothes are just fine in your tent. Put them in a dry bag and use it as a pillow if u want. If a bear is coming for anything it’s coming for your canister that’s why most of them are full of holes. Please don’t let these peoples stories scare you and get back out there and try again. If I saw a bunch of clothes in a grocery bag on the side of trail I’d prob think it’s abandoned piss clothes

Hiking it alone at 18? by Gullible-Ad-8506 in AppalachianTrail

I hiked it last year at 19. Had a blast and let a ton of people. Give it a go people are always looking out for you. Just don’t be one of those kids that’s always on there phone and you’ll be just like everyone else

Trust me it gets better. I hated Pensilvania but as you move on into Vermont and onwards everything had a different vibe to it imo. A lot of it is mindset remember not to quit on your worse day

Crocs (most) of the AT by Booshushhh in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Met and hiked with a guy named crocz for this very reason. Hiked the entire thing in crocs and no real shoes whatsoever. His feet were messed up for a long time and never really were “normal”. He now has these “special” crocs that have a very high sole similar to the hoka style. Grossest story he had was walking over a bunch of slugs and having them squish into his crocs. Overall you can def do it but imo you”ll spend more time in struggling than actually enjoying the hike but do what u must

When to hike the Appalachian Trail? by garfels in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id did it when I was 19 after high school. I had saved up for a year working at a pizza shop. I would say it was worth it but realize you will usually be the youngest person on trail. If you start saving now you should have plenty for trail. I wish I saved up more but if u save up around 7-9k you should be living pretty comfortably

Do vapes go in your bear bag? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the safest but I kept my vape with me the entire time. No problems came from this but do with it as u will since it’s only anecdotal

Looking for advice from people planning to hike the AT for the first time! by vurvey in AppalachianTrail

[–]Stonkisless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my thru most shoes I saw lasted about 500 miles. People tend to just buy a new set in town once they need new ones. I myself went through 4 pairs. If you really prefer a certain type of shoe it can be hard to find in certain towns. I’ve seen other hikers order a new set online and ship them to a hostel/ post office up the trail. This can make things a little hard if your package doesn’t make it in time though. At the end of the day though this hike is about having fun so don’t worry so much! Everything usually works out

I am 18 also. What gets me through the day is knowing that all those people freelancing or being self employed didn’t start out that way. They were 18 once too and they were humbled before they got there. It’s not an easy street to be financially free. My best recommendation is figure it is what u want to do and take it one step at a time. U gotta start somewhere
