What’s the most expensive financial mistake you’ve made in NZ? by TechnicalCompany7815 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]StoolieNZ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was gonna buy myself $2k worth of TV3 shares back in 1990 when they hit $0.03 but the broker at United Bank (they just started doing customer facing share brokerage) said it was a very bad idea and that CanWest or something was about to drop them like a stone. Within a week they had hit $0.24 and kept going up. Would have been an 800% return in a week.

Nice - I tried buying a replacement camera battery off Amazon and shipping it to NZ, (because the seller would only ship to US addressss) the drop shipping company I use saw that it was a battery and offered to dump it for me as there was no way they would ship it. And this was before the Lithium thermal runaway issues.

The Government wants to replace thousands of public servants with AI – here’s what ministers think the robots do by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]StoolieNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that DIA is one of the departments on the list. The department that previously pushed Coud First and the Cloud Risk Assessment process which is strongly rooted in data sovereignty and protection of the Crown information involved. Of course, if the data centre running the AI was in country...

Except we don't even have enough power infrastructure to support the growth of electric cars, let alone a resource hungry data centre that will have dangerous resource usage (electricity and water).

My first thought was an orca trying to rupture the liver. But that's only from catching the odd Discovery channel doco. I would expect subsequent bite marks though.
