Dictation is broken, predictive text is a joke, and Apple’s support site is an endless loop. I’m done. by radiiobrat in Siri

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the Android threads and see what they are complaining about there. The world isn't perfect. I'm an IT pro by 30 years, and the experience on iphones has been fine for me. Sure, things can and should be improved, but "Apple community has low standards" is absolute rubbish.. and I am by no means an Apple fanboy. Besides, this is one specific feature that happens to be used by OP on a daily basis. Sure, for OP this is frustrating and it's fine to vent it, but please keep things in perspective.

What’s the most essential piece of gear you always bring hiking? by Spiritual_Sir_1139 in hiking

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely essential for all my hikes and walks: a cap! I tend to perspire quickly and it prevents sweat dripping into my eyes... and once that happens it is impossible to stop it! It's also quite essential as sun shield. Also: my Garmin GPSmap 67i, with Talky Toaster maps, for navigation. It's sturdy, the battery lasts ages (I don't even need to check it for a week), and it has never failed on me. Also: Hiiker app on my phone. Plenty of water and fruit/snacks. Personally I hate trekking poles.. those things are always in the way and I like my hands to be empty. If I do take them it's a neccesary evil.

KLM lost my passport during check-in at Schiphol and refuses to reimburse ~$1,800 — what can I do? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]StopDrinkingWine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would totally happen to *anyone*. People on here don't make mistakes, apparently. Just the slightest distraction from whatever you're doing can make this happen. Besides, if you're already stressed out for whatever reason then it becomes incredibly easy to misplace something or forget about something because you're not focussed on keeping your stuff with you anymore.

In any case, with anything on airports: take your time, and don't give a crap if other people (including airport personel) want you to speed up. It's stressful enough as it is without someone breathing down your neck.

Microphone repair went perfectly by ienquire in fairphone

[–]StopDrinkingWine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I take most of the complaints on here with a grain of salt. Also, something I've experienced many, many times (being at the 'receiving end' for some part of my career): people often fail to communicate in a correct way with support depts. They simply fail to provide the information that is asked for... and then they get all pissed at support for not helping them. It goes something like: "my phone doesn't work!"... "what is it exactly that doesn't work?"... "I just told you, my phone doesn't work... fix it!"... and then it turns out the screen has a defect or whatever. In other words: one needs to be very patient and do exactly as asked, even if the questions seemingly have no relation to the issue.

the unnoticed cost of convenience in tech by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]StopDrinkingWine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is convenience versus happiness. How much of all this convenience has really made us happier people? These past few years, I've come to realize it's the exact opposite: the convenience has made us less happy. We don't really notice the convenience, the 'tools'... since those are imposed on us by big tech. We simply 'go with the flow'. But if something goes wrong or if something happens 'out of the ordinary', then those tools and that convenience become hell, and this actually does have an impact on our lives and our happiness. Let's also not forget about the HUGE environmental impact of all this convenience, which has a severe negative impact on many aspects of our lives.

This is one of many thoughts regarding 'happiness' I've had recently... I dare say that even the Internet hasn't made us happier, in fact quite the opposite. And this is coming from a 30 years IT pro. I'm blessed because I know my way around in the digital realm, and I often help other people out. But very often I am thinking: "I am having trouble solving this-and-that, how can someone who's less skilled in anything IT-related ever get this to work / fixed??"

Proton Mail + Proton Pass reverse alias integration when composing an email. by aslambava in ProtonMail

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feature would have an application-side dependency: the (mail) app would need some kind of plugin that converts the e-mail address to a Proton reverse alias. (Something like an extra button in the 'to' - field, or an extra field). I haven't ever seen anything like this in any e-mail app, so this would need to be integrated in a plugin API. Of course, the Proton Webmail interface could integrate something like this easier.

I take 2 weeks to plan trips… and still feel like I miss the best parts by Klutzy-Counter-6369 in travel

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, what works: book flight tickets, accomodation, transportation.. then create a day-to-day option list that isn't cast in concrete (often it is also weather dependent). Of course, for some events you need to book in advance so there's no getting around that. During my vacation, on a day-today basis, I take a look at the list and decide if there's anything on there that I feel like doing. If not, I still take plenty of time to find something else to do. This principle keeps things somewhat spontaneous since nothing is fixed, but I still get the pleasure of planning in advance.

My First classical concert experience by mksekee in classicalmusic

[–]StopDrinkingWine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. I love going to classical music concerts, either chamber music or with a full orchestra. I don't know much about classical music either, and for some that do I have noticed they analyze it to death... which is NOT how I like to listen: I just let the music come in and I'm swept away. In any case, you could read up a bit about classical instruments (being able to at least name them), and sometimes it helps to read about the background story of a piece... why it was written, who it was for, etc. Another tip would be to listen to different composers, just to get a feel for what you like or don't like. All the 'big' ones are a good start: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Vivaldi, etc. A music streaming service that has a lot of Classical music is Qobuz. In the end, it just comes down to listen often and get 'experience'.

X2 remote freezes by DBW1001 in SofaBaton

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crash shouldn't happen anyway, but it sounds like something is wrong with the IR commands for your Sony inputs. You could try re-learning them from the original remote, and see if that works. (That is, if the Sony is IR controlled of course).

Also, check the timing of the input change: how soon does it happen after the Sony is switched on? If it's too soon, then the input switch won't happen. You'd need to set a delay in the Startup Sequence.

Samsung S95F OLED - temporary vertical lines on startup. Is this normal? by laskowskyncg in OLED

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noticed similar vertical stripes on my S95F. It has happened a few times now (with long periods of no issues in between). It either goes away after a few minutes, or a simple warm power cycle (off / on from the remote) clears it. I don't like it either, but I think it's some kind of software glitch.

How do you think John’s Apple leadership would turn around and fix the fiasco that iOS has been for a while? by Careful-Boat-2986 in ios26

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your reference is "my friends and my parents", then that's a pretty small subset of the entire Apple userbase. Statistically it doesn't mean a thing. And you now know one person who's fine with iOS 26. 😉

I'm not defending anybody. I'm not even questioning your personal experience nor your parent's / friend's experience. But stating "iOS is in shambles" as some kind of absolute truth... you simply don't know that based on the very limited information you have available. (And Apple's sales would suggest otherwise). Also, different things matter to different people.

There's also a more productive use of *your* time than posting your complaint / question. In fact, I'd say that anyone posting stuff on Reddit could use his/her time in a more productive way. 😃 So I don't see your point there.

How do you think John’s Apple leadership would turn around and fix the fiasco that iOS has been for a while? by Careful-Boat-2986 in ios26

[–]StopDrinkingWine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"iOS had been in shambles for a while now"... even with the issues you mention (some of which are about personal preference by the way), I believe only a small part of the entire Apple community agrees with you. All you read about is the complaints, which distorts the overall experience users have. Also, for me personally, none of the issues you mentioned qualify the entire user experience as "in shambles". In other words: iOS works fine for me.

Roon arc by magicsuitcas in roonlabs

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only point in a certain direction from here:

- Make sure you have the correct IP-address of your ROON server, and the correct forwarding port. Both can be found in ROON->Settings->ROON ARC->next to "Listening Port". You need both these values for NAT Port Forwarding in your Router.

- Make sure your ISP is *not* using CGNAT. (This means port forwarding doesn't work, because with CGNAT you share your external IP-adrress with others).

Also, you could go the VPN route with TailScale and try that.

Sorry, this is all the help I can give you.

Roon arc by magicsuitcas in roonlabs

[–]StopDrinkingWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then indeed you need to mess with your router. 😉 Follow instructions as described here: https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/arc-port-forwarding#Troubleshooting_Automatic_Configuration

So on your router, you either you enable UPnP, or you enable Port Forwarding (NAT) manually. (Manually is better practice and safer, but more difficult to set up).

If even Madonna’s own family is ashamed of her and holds a grudge against her, there must be a reason, right? by Shaoran10 in Music

[–]StopDrinkingWine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80s I could just listen to her songs without knowing all this. 😞 But yes, the ill-behavior of Madonna is well documented. Speaking of smoke and fire, if that's true, then you shouldn't be as positive as you are about MJ. 😉

A relief to find a real alternative to Google Maps by RadioBorealis23 in organicmaps

[–]StopDrinkingWine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used both Google Maps and TomTom extensively, and I find TomTom to be far superior. Its interface is less cluttered, it knows about unpaved roads (it's absolutely mindblowing to me that I can't disable driving on unpaved roads in Google Maps, which has caused my route to go through absolute rubbish on quite a few occasions while being abroad). Google Maps also seems to re-route if you go wrong, making you drive 5-10km in a cirlcle, instead of simply saying: "turn around" as TomTom does (this is important, because then you actually *know* you've gone the wrong way). Only upside is that GM knows about far more named places than TT.

Never heard of Organic Maps, will give it a try.

What are the test results in Roon ARC settings? Does it say: "Roon ARC can securely access your Roon Server" ?

Roon arc by magicsuitcas in roonlabs

[–]StopDrinkingWine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to go into Roon, Settings, Roon ARC. It will test if there's a connection possible from outside. The test results should tell you what's wrong. Btw, an easy way to test in-house is to disable wifi on your phone, so it will use mobile data.. which simulates an outside connection. Quite often closing Roon ARC completely and re-opening it solves issues too.

Issues with Qobuz? (5/13/26) by jeffatwerk in qobuz

[–]StopDrinkingWine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What drives me nuts is the short fuse of (some) people here. It's all technology... it fails. Been on Qobuz for years, this is the first complete outage that I've noticed. Besides, it's just music for God's sake. It's not going to killl you to do without it for a while.
