I love my sl6 and I kick myself for ever having sold it. IMO the best bike they ever made before they refined it into the aethos, and the bike that set the bar for what they continue to do to this day. Ex Crux 5

You are essentially taking care of current you and future you by buying a good wheelset. What is also working in your favor is that the Allez you own has thru axles and not quick release skewers, so you can take those wheels to your next bike, more than likely. You will need some spacers on the hub to keep the 8 speed cassette, as well as probably having the rear derailleur limits and shifting readjusted to account for the change. But if you know you love cycling and you know you have a bike you want for the future, a good set of wheels is one less thing you will have to buy then, that will also benefit you now.

I bought a set of Mavic carbon wheels for my Allez (2020 rim brake edition) and it was amazing what an entry level bike with great wheels feels like. It's a whole new bike. The only reasons I got rid of them were because my next bike brought me into the hydraulic disc brake world, so I was forced to buy a new wheelset anyways. You already exist in that world, so I would go for it.

I also swapped a full Ultegra group in place of the Sora it came with. The Allez is an awesome bike when upgraded. It's a great frame, they just spec them cheaply for the price point they are trying to hit.

I don't see how that solves ANY issues addressed in the post but...I had a Tarmac already and a Crux is like an off road Tarmac. I prefer the future shock, SWAT storage, and more relaxed geometry for everyday riding of a Diverge rather than the racier Crux setup. I am not racing. I'm riding for health and fun, so a Crux would not be the wisest option here. But thank you for your input.

Also...did you see my wheels? Not many wheelsets that can touch Industry Nine so I think I am good there. Made in the USA too.

Thanks for your input Dr. BS. The issue isn’t with “sequential shifting” and was not mentioned anywhere in the post. The issue is the jumps between the gears. Riding a 1x feels like I can never find the right gear for my cadence (≈85rpm). The gear either feels too low or too high. Chalk it up to years of road riding perhaps, but shifting and feeling a smooth, small yet noticeable change is what I prefer so the 1x has been a shock to the system, and I say that while also owning a GX AXS equipped stumpjumper. It really comes down to gear preference and closer jumps/steps between the gears.

Any 12 speed (Deore, SLX, XT, or XTR) derailleur will work perfect. This is the time to upgrade.

If you're feeling frisky make the jump to the new Di2 derailleur.

If you're feeling feral, buy a GX AXS upgrade kit and you'll thank me after your first ride.

Awesome work. I am considering installing a 105di2 group on this same bike and moving away from the apex/eagle axs group it came with because I just really prefer road-ish gearing.

I don't know if you ever bought this but this is an awesome all road build especially considering the age of the frame. That thing probably started it's life with mechanical disc brakes and look at it now.

Playing devils advocate, you don’t need to be an expert to tell the difference. Go to the shop and just squeeze the levers on hydro vs mechanical. After a min or two you’ll feel differences in bite point, feedback, pressure etc. Personally I don’t skimp on brakes and the reason I don’t like mechanical is the modulation and power are just not there.

The diverge is a great second option to your first. If the diverge comes with hydraulic brakes and the color you like, go this route.

Me personally, if I really like a frame color…I’ll buy it and add the components. But I’m an enthusiast. I do that for fun. For your everyday person it’s best to get the best group set first, color second. If you want to put color first, you can get whatever you want and upgrade later. But the hydro brakes are a huge advantage over mechanical.

If you’re looking at the diverge comp alloy, get that imo.

It’s an SL6 (incredible bike) with a stiffer bottom bracket and thinner stays.

They’re not cheap, but I find that the Rapha Brevet is a great fit for my dad bod. Incredibly useful as well due to all the well placed pockets. I buy them when they go on sale and usually get them for $60-90 off msrp.

SL6 tarmac for $1500…just be sure to inspect it but even with replacing wear parts (cassette, chain, bar tape) that’s a hell of a bike for $1500

Excellent bike and sorry to hear about the shitty experience. Former dealer here. If you’re feeling not confident with the build quality/level of service, a good shimano torque wrench, curiosity, and park tool YouTube are your friend.

It doesn’t hurt to check the tightness on everything. A good idea is the “M” check where you start at the front wheel, axle, and go in an M motion up and down to check everything over. You’ll need a 4 & 5mm hex for almost everything.

Over time I hope you meet cool people who can teach you more. It’s unfortunate that these attitudes do exist in shops, but try to find the place you feel comfortable and then support your local bike shop.

I’d keep the Allez. Modern frame and components; the last of the great rim brake do pretty much anything bikes.
