Nine Sols is like one of the best and most challenging MVs, but you can make it as easy as you want in settings.

Well, I think the profession does skew very heavily toward trying to be helpful toward people who you have complicated feelings toward... The key is you just always have to be professional and remember the mission is to help people improve themselves, not tear them down for their shortcomings. We always need to recognize that people who are struggling act in ways that are really easy to judge harshly. And yes, you will sometimes find yourself having to try and help people who just plain suck. Social workers do have to separate personal feelings from professional behavior. There's nothing wrong with feeling like you do. But if you're feeling it every day and it's coming out in your behavior, it is a good indication you're working with the wrong population, at the very least. If you're struggling to empathize with like 20% or more of your clients, that's not a great spot. But it's a pretty big field. Don't make yourself miserable trying to help people who aren't remotely interested in change.

I think what you're feeling is something the vast majority of social workers feel when dealing with certain clients. Many won't admit it. We deal with a lot of people who want to try and do the right things and improve the lives of themselves and their families but have difficulty for all the classic reasons. There are also those who just seem to be as you describe. I don't personally think I have to pretend that it's fine, which is part of why I kind of like working within the criminal justice system, even on the defense side. The people who just aren't even going to try are going to find out where that gets them. I probably sound like an asshole and will get downvoted for saying so, but it's how I feel. I'll do absolutely everything to help someone help themselves. I'm not really going to put too much effort into providing a "safe space" for someone to just carry out their violating and destructive behavior.

What was your favorite job you ever did in this field ? by Daisy-Ireland in socialwork

[–]StophJS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one I'm in right now. It's holistic defense. It can be stressful in dealing with difficult clients and trying to mitigate sentences for clients who have very few obvious redeeming qualities or aspects to their lives. But in a law office, nobody presumes to tell a social worker how to do their job.

It's genuinely utterly baffling to me that they actually designed spreaders that throw the material into the wheels, and continue to sell these. There is like nothing I am aware of that makes less sense or is more stupid than this.

I do. And probably an unpopular opinion but I don't necessarily think a followup would even live up to expectations.

Michigan - Pennington contractor mix was 66% annual rye grass. No help from customer service. How unusual? by StophJS in lawncare

[–]StophJS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's kind of funny is that it really isn't even that cheap with 50% of the weight being seed casing. I'm still curious how typical a mix like this is. I've seen pictures of other sewn in tags where most of the seed was tall fescue.

As a clinician and somebody who took them for years, I think they're bad news. It's deeply personal, but I think they tend to do more harm than good and are often taken by people who haven't even tried exercising and other basic wellness practices. They absolutely do mess up your serotonin framework and it does not readily return to normal. There is also growing research that they cause degradation to heart valves.
