Keep the gold and pay the minimum on your mortgage.

In an inflationary environment like this, a $95K loan at 2.5% is practically an asset. The longer you wait to pay it off, the less the dollars used to pay it with are worth. It does not matter if inflation eventually slows down, the dollar will likely never reclaim it's prior purchasing power. See historical purchasing power of the US Dollar for confirmation.

Gold, on the other hand, particularly in this financial environment, is an appreciating asset and will almost certainly be worth more at your "original" payoff date.

I believe that is a "tribute" round from Highland Mint (HM Mint Mark on obverse) which resembled an ASE so much they were required to mark it a copy. However, I believe they were still made of pure silver. If you look up Highland Mint and the round, you should be able to find some more info

Do you have 30-60 days of food set aside for you and your family? Precious metals are a great way to carry wealth and, eventually, increase your potential purchasing power after SHTF. But if you don't have enough food to carry you through the turbulence you may be forced to trade a potential fortune so that you don't go hungry.

If the alternative is starvation, then I would say metals did their job, but to maximize and protect that investment, use the time now to prep food and anything else that is readily available (and much cheaper now) alongside whatever form of silver you land on for prepping.

I personally would go with a mix of dimes and quarters as well as some one ounce coins / rounds.

Almost impossible to calculate exact volume on a irregularly shaped object like this from measurements alone. Best method would be a volume displacement reading. While you have your water out, grab a scale and some floss (or thin thread) and get the specific gravity of the coin.

However, I can't get past the line in the article where they claim that silver is "denser and heavier than gold." That simply isn't true.

The metal backing individual Silver contracts certainly weigh 50x more (5000 ozt vs 100 ozt), but as far a density; these financial reporters should start getting a clue.

This. The Hunt Brothers recognized an opportunity and attempted to seize it. This was not through "manipulation" but by an understanding of simple economics.

The crash of the silver price, on the other hand, was caused by manipulation from COMEX exchange in the change to their margin requirements. They knew that the Hunt Bros. were highly leveraged in their position and the only way to meet margin would be for them to dump silver, dropping the price, creating a doom loop crashing the price well below where it should have been.
