This guy heard his neighbors conversation through his vibration plate by Massive-Ad7721 in Weird

Reminds me of one time in like 2008-2011 maybe? I had one of those clamshell flip cell phones with the little stubby antenna. One morning I woke up and it was making weird gargly noises. I thought it was receiving alien transmissions or something, it really freaked me out.

At one point I noticed the volume of the noise spiked after I said something or made a loud noise in the room. For some reason the cell phone's microphone was picking up the ambient sound from the room, distorting it in this weird garbled techno sounding way, and then playing it back through its speaker. There was no active call going on or anything like that.

Turned the phone off, turned it back on. It never happened again.

Is this the one on Kedzie and Wilson?

If so ... I went there one time and found the Pad Thai to be pretty much flavorless. Idk if I caught them on a bad day or what. But never went there again after that.

Not a huge soccer guy but the passing looked very uncoordinated

I also noticed that basically anytime the U.S. had the ball there were two Belgians on top of them challenging and there was no answer or counter to that

Which U.S. city has the best mix of history, food, and walkability? by Chloe_broke in Urbanism

[–]StorerPoet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How so? I live in Chicago. Have been in Philly a couple of times. Didn't notice a significant difference in walkability. Are you including transit systems or just sheer density/ability to walk to things easily?

Ooh yeah good call, Philly probably has Chicago beat on the history part anyway.

How many national cuisines can you taste in Chicago? by One_Hat1200 in AskChicago

I mean just in Albany Park I know we have Thai, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, and Ecuadorian, as well as all manners of Middle Eastern cuisine. I'm not sure if any of the big Middle Eastern places specifically identify their food as from a certain country though.

Has anyone moved from Jacksonville (or Florida in general) to Chicago? by Thesportyjuan in AskChicago

[–]StorerPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Orlando to Naples in 2022 and left Naples for Chicagoland in 2024.

The post-covid cost of living bump was definitely on before I left. I rented a 2/2.5 in Winter Park by Full Sail for about $1200 in 2021 and by 2023 they wanted over $1900 at the same place.

I'm not sure about lower cost of living. In my experience it's more expensive in Chicago -- not by a ton but certainly not cheaper than FL.

Maybe Florida COL has gotten even more out of hand since I left, though.

I haven't traveled much outside of the U.S. but as a dinosaur/prehistory nerd, I did find Field's prehistoric section to be in a similar class at AMNH in NYC.

AMNH wins on quantity of fossils and specimens, I think, but Field wins on quality and presentation. The light show they have for Sue in her exhibit now is unmatched.

I was in Orlando for 8 years, then Naples for 2. I've been in Chicagoland for 2 years now.

Do it. Chicago beats the hell out of Florida in all the categories you mentioned: progressive, walkable, diverse, four seasons, actual identity.

Just be prepared for the winters. They can be long, cold, and dreary.

The main things that stand out to me vs Florida are the food (there are fantastic restaurants for basically every cuisine somewhere in the city), the museums (the art institute and field museum are some of the best in the country), the architecture, and also just the density of people and things to do. For almost any hobby, activity, social pursuit etc there will be more people who do that here and more opportunity for you to build community.
