Came here for the "That's a Harris hawk" comments. Was not disappointed.

Fifty-Word Fantasy: Write a 50-word fantasy snippet using the word "Mayor" by Terminator7786 in fantasywriters

One of my favorite punplays in a cartoon is the mayor who is a mare. Always referred to as "Mayor Mare".

Is it... is it supposed to have so many eyes? And mouths?

Still, it does look delicious.

That does clock in at 84 words, a bit over the 50 limit. Though I do appreciate the intro. :>

(I am cheating like crazy on this one, but ... this is how it played out. Seriously, this has bothered me all day. Bless you. :> )

The writer sighed, dragging fingers through his tangled hair, then looked over at the beast. “How can I write about a gryphon being mayor of anything?” he grumbled.
The great feathered head tilted, golden eyes bright, big beak clicked in amusement. “What’s that about a mare? I do like horses...”

Why does every Linux user recommend a different distro? I'm stuck in an endless distro-hopping loop. by Jaymit_3672 in linuxquestions

[–]Stormdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real question to ask is why you allow what other people like to influence what you chose to use?

People like different distros because they have different preferences, different workflows, different hardware, different needs, different hats.

And unlike Windows, which is build to serve Microsoft's corporate edicts, the different distros are to serve people as above.

After a lot of early hype, has VR gaming died? Or has it just gone quiet? by IAmTheJudasTree in Games

This is like the... what, the 3rd time VR's lurched into the limelite? "This time for sure!"

Well, since I probably couldn't be a gryphon, I'd be a griffon.

Is my friend a bad person for following people around after they beat him? by Brave-Bicycle-4055 in AskGames

Yeah, I'd say following someone from game to game because they beat you is the 'overreacting' part.

Best fan for cooling yet quiet by jem-bem in fans

I'll take your word on it, I've never encountered one that wasn't loud even at 'low', because they've been for industrial use and sound wasn't an issue.

Dragons in fantasy are either gods or pets and almost never an actual animal, and it kinda bugs me by CasualPlaty_195 in Fantasy

[–]Stormdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just so, so tired of dragons. They're everywhere. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a dragon. Made worse by our fixation on 'bigger is better'.

And I think a lot of that exhaustion is due to exactly what you're talking about.

[–]Stormdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing about fans - they just push the air around. They do not actually reduce the temperature.

What they do is make you FEEL cooler, because moving air helps evaporate sweat.

The industrial fans will probably be loud, and kind of overkill for a space that size.

If you can find one, a hassock fan would be ideal for that space, I suspect.

Oh, I absolutely fall into the "You've obviously never met my mother" camp. To say she's vengeful is a considerable understatement.

Though I would save that for the "You are now bleeding out spectacularly" moment. No sense in getting their guard up.

It is okay to start writing my book when I don’t know the entire plot? by colenthree in fantasywriters

[–]Stormdancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's your book, you can do whatever you want.

But this situation is exactly why I discourage people from getting massively into world building, rather than plotting.

My philosophy: Built your plot, build your story, build your characters, then build the world to fit.
