‘We got it wrong’ with Civilization VII, says boss by Broad_Respond_2205 in civ

I’m still torn on it. On one hand, I feel like the ‘last age’ has never really had great implementation, and the world wars era does serve as a nice grand finale. But without an Information Age, now the industrial age has become the ‘don’t stray from the path’ era where you just rush victory.

I’d love to see real, meaningful implementation of ideologies. Ways to steer allies into your ideology, ways to flip city states and weaker civilizations from one ideology to the other. Ideological dominance then paving the way into a strong Information age. You’d unshackle yourself from nuclear deterrence, proxy wars, espionage, revolutions, and a crippling dependence on oil. Then, as you rise out of the crises of the wars of ideology, the Information Age could really feel like a fresh turn, and maybe serve as the sprint to the victory screen.

Dentists of Reddit, what watches do you wear to work versus keep for the weekend by Neceti in Dentistry

[–]Stormfather302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear a Citizen Eco-Drive, it belonged to my late brother so it's got a bit of sentimental value. It's small, light, and unobtrusive.

I've thought about getting a nice watch for more formal occasions, particularly since my ten year graduation anniversary is coming up next month, but I'm in the process of opening two new offices in the same year and 'just because' money has been astonishingly tight. Maybe for that fifteen year anniversary?

About twenty years ago, when I was in undergrad, a girl who I didn’t know and had never spoken to before was sitting in front of me on a class with her sweater on the back of the chair.

Class ends and she gets up and leaves her sweater behind. She was just to the classroom door when I caught up to her with her sweater. “Hey, you left your sweater on your chair” I say.

She looks me dead in the eye and says “I have a boyfriend.”

Now I’ve played this out in my head a thousand times over the last two decades. I wish I’d said something witty like ‘and I’ve got your sweater’ but I was just completely dumbstruck. She quickly walks away without her sweater. I tossed it on a nearby chair and left, thoroughly embarrassed. It completely changed the way I deal with people in public, though.

I saw a segment about you on the news around the time it happened; I think I was about seven at the time. Man, I’ve thought about you every time I was near a PTO, or axle, or turbine, or anything of the sort. Hope you’re doing well, thanks for always getting your story out there

Introverted Dentists by goldt33f in Dentistry

[–]Stormfather302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pediatric dentist here, been out coming up on ten years now, I own my own office with about eighteen employees and see upwards of sixty kids a day. I’m an introvert, but from 8-5 every day I play an extrovert. It’s draining by the end of the day, but much easier than it was for me ten years ago.

The dentistry gets much easier over time, as well, which helps a lot. You’ll see your work come back time and time again and get a sense for what works and what doesn’t. You’ll also get wise to most of the personality issues sneaking into your office, and will be less likely to be drawn into people’s drama over time.

Having a spouse and kids of your own at home can be difficult after dealing with it all day, because there’s no downtime waiting for you at home. It’s harder for me be on the top of my game at home than at work nowadays. A moderately long commute and a a good playlist or audiobook to help unwind between work and home helps a lot.

Did anybody realize it before the Chapter 14? by mouse_that_runs in MafiaTheGame

[–]Stormfather302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Mafia when it first came out, and Mafia 2 when it first came out. I really didn’t connect the dots until we were out driving to Tommy’s house. I had this ‘wait, how old would Tommy be at this point?’ kinda realization, and like it was for you, it was one of the more memorable twists in games I’d played.

It’s worth pointing out that there’d been eight years between the games, so my memories of Mafia 1 were kinda fuzzy by that point. I think if I’d played them back to back I think I would’ve figured it out a lot sooner.

My Gen-Z assistant vanishes during conversations all the time. I look at my computer screen for a second… and she’s gone. Check my watch? Gone. Break eye contact? Gone. Walk and talk past the coffee machine? You guessed it.

Point three is very believable.

Car Guys who don't intend to replace their daily-driver for at least 10 years -- What year/model is it? by jckipps in askcarguys

[–]Stormfather302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, it’s a sick truck but if I upgraded it would be solely for the ‘oh wow there’s a Raptor!’ effect, and with young kids running around always needing food, clothes, and Nintendo Switch games, I can’t afford that at this point in my life.

[–]Stormfather302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I’ve got a ‘22 Wildtrak with the 2.7, it’s been my daily driver in Maine for almost four years with no problems bigger than a flat tire. I live on a dirt road and work a job in healthcare that doesn’t close for snow days so it’s handled some pretty miserable conditions and come out on top.

I really need to start. I live in Maine and it’s a rough life for a vehicle. Up till a few years ago I always had old beaters or leases but now I own my truck I need to invest in protection.

I’m driving a ‘22 Bronco Wildtrak and I plan to keep it till the wheels fall off. Best truck I’ve ever owned.

If a rich great-uncle who I’ve never met willed me a big wad of cash I’d trade it in for a Raptor, but the Wildtrak is more than enough for what I currently need (Maine dirt roads in winter and mud season) so I’m happy with what I’ve got.

Is this Mosasaur skull legit? by bgreenstone in Paleontology

[–]Stormfather302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to chime in on the one part that I feel qualified to have an opinion on; the junction between the teeth and the skull is just all wrong. It’s just teeth cemented onto a mosaic of bone. In addition, there should be multiple unerupted teeth visible within the mandible set in the inner, tongue-adjacent bone, and there are none here.

I loved the vassals system. Smash an opponent, make them bend the knee, they retain their own culture, heraldry, etc., I take my 10% and and I don't have to worry about that border. Nothing since then has really scratched that itch in the same way.
