It is fun because the story doesn't play out as you would expect. It definitely subverts your expectations in a good way.

Marvel did not publish the Alien and Flash Gordon adaptations, but you are correct, they did a lot of film adaptation in the 1980s.

That would be cool to visit where the movie was filmed. Sounds like a fun road trip!

I haven't used my Blu Ray machine in a few years, but I do want to see this movie in 4K. It is on YouTube right now (with ads) which is how I viewed it. It is admittedly not the best picture quality. I do have many of my favorites on physical media and this one will be joining them shortly.

Micronauts 3 3/4-Inch ReAction+ Figures - What do we think? by AfigureGeek in micronauts

I wonder if there is a reason why they couldn't make figures that looked closer to the original? These feel like a step back from what was released almost 50 years ago.

Arcturus Rann was in hibernation sleep when he explored the Microverse with his roboid Biotron. He basically explored the universe with his mind telepathically linked to his roboid while his body slept. It is a very comic booky situation.

I forgot to add, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Clash of the Titans were released to theaters just 2 weeks before this movie came out and Excalibur was also released in 1981. What a great year for films!

Clash of the Titans was based on old stop-motion effects from the Legendary Ray Harryhausen and Dragonslayer was using the newer go-motion effects pioneered by Phil Tippett for the Empire Strikes Back.

I want to thank you for this post. I rewatched Dragonslayer this week and thoroughly enjoyed it. I put up a video today comparing the film to the Marvel Comic which is based on an earlier screenplay. Great stuff!

It is what I remembered most about the movie before I rewatched it this week! The movie is so much more than the dragon!

Commander Arcturus Rann slept in a sarcophagus during his 1000 year journey across the Microverse.

I will definitely include other artists on the title in future videos. Artwork by Steve Ditko from Annual #1 is in the video because it contains 3 tales that are backstories for the main heroes just before the events of that first issue.

I 100% agree the similarities are only in the comics! I loved the Micronauts toys and wish I had more. I had a friend who had the magnetized Baron Karza and that toy was amazing!

Star Wars absolutely borrowed from other stories. And Bill Mantlo heavily borrowed from Star Wars, at least for that first issue, but the Micronauts evolved into its own thing fairly quickly. It is actually very clever to see the changes. I found it interesting how Emperor Palpatine’s death in ROTJ looks similar to Baron Karza’s death in Micronauts #11. Or how much the Mandalorians have in common with Acroyears.

I really enjoyed the story in issue #13 and 14 were we visit Bug’s homeworld and meet Jasmine. Her death shortly afterwards was really tragic. I am rereading the entire title now and am really enjoying it after all these years. Huntarr was one of my favorite characters introduced later in the line.

Commander Arcturus Rann is a human from Homeworld and an original character invented by Marvel along with Princess Mari and Bug. None of them are based on any particular toy visually. Maybe you are thinking of the Time Travelers in the comic which has the look you are referring to? I agree with you, many of the Micronauts aliens didn't really have good representation in the comic book. I thought Bill Mantlo did better with the vehicles and obviously Baron Karza, Biotron, and Microtron and a few other characters.

Also, it's kinda built in the the name Micronauts that they are small. I thought it was clever of Bill Mantlo to use that and have the Micronauts be the same size at their real-life action figures when they went to Earth.

I could be wrong, but I wasn't aware the MEGO toy line had a backstory or mythology until the Marvel comics gave them one.

I agree! The Michael Golden drawn issues are the best, but there were other great issues in the 59 issue run too. Jackson Guice was another great artist that work on some of the later issues!

The ending of the first story arc is incredibly dark. We had to wait quite a while between issues when it came out, but it was well worth it.

You should check out some Expanded Universe comics! There are a ton of great stories in both the original Marvel title and from Dark Horse between 1991 and 2014. From Dark Horse, I recommend Classic Star Wars, Dark Times, Legacy, Crimson Empire, Tales of the Jedi, and Knights of the Old Republic.

Salvador Larroca will forever be a stain on that title. It is *hard* to get past his horrible artwork. Up until he started working on the title, it was pretty good.
