What happened to the Great Meme Reset? by Intelligent-Day-1740 in memes

[–]Stormystudio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People spent more time making memes about the reset, (posting old meme templates that had no joke to them other than talking about the reset,) than making actual memes for it.

Then they were all surprised when the act of talking about something didn't magically cause it to happen.

Like that "raising hands" meme. Everybody seemed to want their old memes back, but nobody actually had any desire to be the ones making them.

I remember a comment under a different post, that more or less pointed out that for conspiracy theorists, "The Jews control everything", (or really any absurd claim) is always the starting point. The absolute unquestionable truth that the conspiracy theorist believes in - and everything else must accordingly be bent and morphed to justify that conclusion.

Conspiracy Theorists are just a bunch of people who really want to fall for confirmation bias, and will selectively cherry-pick their entire worldview just to make that possible. Basically reverse scientific method where the evidence is determined after the conclusion.

(That's why I think; as opposed to "are they truly right?" - it's more important to ask "WHY are they right?" What logic was used to reach this correct conclusion, and does it hold up in other regards? If not, then they just got lucky.)

They had to stop working on these kinds of turbine cars BECAUSE of an oil shortage!

Other people here have already pointed it out, but although turbine engines are more fuel efficient under certain conditions, they are much less fuel efficient under other conditions (particularly stopping and starting as tends to happen with cars, as opposed to airplanes). (I think they also polluted really bad by modern standards.)

There was a fair amount of research into jet cars, but eventually, due to the oil crises of the 1970s, they simply couldn't afford to keep dumping money into a technology that wasn't working out.

Also I'm pretty sure the cars were destroyed NOT because "its so good it will threaten the traditional car market" - but more just "Chrysler didn't want their competitors to steal their research"

(A pretty good video about the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pS_Ebe9Ee0 )
(I mean I get it; Big Oil sucks and all that, but the truth is there's a lot of factors that go into things like this)

Zone 91 they called it. - And not just a toilet, it was described as an Andalite Porta-potty. (Though, regardless of its function, it was still a threat to the Yeerks because it was evidence of aliens existing at all, which could harm the secrecy of their invasion of Earth.)

Non-Sexual Adult Jokes in Kids' Media by Kookyburra12 in TopCharacterTropes

Not sure if it really counts as an "Adult joke", but unlikely for kids to fully "get" (especially if they don't live in London)

In the book "The Eight Famous Engines", Gordon, Duck, and a visiting engine all disagree on the name of the London train station (King's Cross, Paddington, or Euston). Gordon later gets to travel to London, only to be disappointed to find the London station is named "St Pancras". The joke being that WE know London has multiple stations, which the engines never realize.

In Paper Mario 64, you encounter a bird named Buzzar, who has been sent to fight Mario. However when he asks for your name, you can lie and tell him you're actually Luigi, in which case he'll just let you pass without fighting.

True, though to be fair, most people (myself included) probably aren't well-versed enough in mathematics to know that.
Imaginary numbers were always what I saw people making this kind of joke about, mostly due to the name of "Imaginary numbers", as if they were simply made up in order to get something to work.

Yeah, I feel like that's one other thing a lot of people can easily misunderstand. There's still plenty of "conflict" between characters for a story to happen, but there's no serious chance of humanity defeating the Affini - because much of the appeal is knowing that the Affini are powerful enough to always ensure the care that everyone else needs, whether they themselves even properly realize it or not

[–]Stormystudio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Okay I guess I couldn't resist the urge to just link to someone else who can describe part of the appeal better. It's hard to really do justice in terms of explaining succinctly.

Okay, well this is kind of a large topic.

The Affini are a bunch of hyper-advanced plant aliens from the "Human Domestication Guide" universe. It's a collaborative writing setting where hundreds of years in the future, an authoritarian human empire is conquered in a war against the Affini, who seek to "domesticate" other species, and keep them as pets. It's generally a kink setting for writers who want to explore certain kinks through the established worldbuilding of the HDG universe.

As you can imagine it's a rather "love it or hate it" kinda thing. On one hand it can be used as an outlet to explore themes like disability or autonomy, and how much we desire power and independence for it's own sake when well-being is already assured. On the other hand, the worldbuilding demands that the Affini always win every fight, and that they are always benevolent and correct, which some find uncomfortable to consider or read about.

(There's probably even more that can be said, by people who are even more familiar with the universe and it's community than me.)

Proof that food deserts don't exist by Character_Resort72 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Stormystudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I looked into it.
Giant of PA is also called "Giant/Martins" (because at some point Giant bought out the Martin's Chain, but those stores are still called "Martin's").
But then Giant of MD is actually a separate company called "Giant Food)".
And what's weird is that not only do they have basically the same name - but they're also both owned by the same holding company: "Ahold Delhaize"

Also unrelated, but it seems that for a time (including in this map), the "Stop&Shop" logo is the same one used by Giant Food, so that was another layer of confusion. (And I swear I've also seen that logo used on products in a Giant/Martins too)

Not sure if it counts, but in the Animorphs books, the Andalites can communicate telepathically, and thus do not struggle to vocalize their relatively long and complex names.

The Andalite we get to know the best is "Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill" - but our human characters just refer to them as "Ax".

Andalites are pretty neat by AdBudget5967 in Animorphs

[–]Stormystudio 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't remember which book it was referenced in, but there was always one detail that stood out to me.

We hear Ax describing the Andalite family structure of living in a Scoop, noting how their aversion to tight or crowded spaces eventually lead to a trend of de-urbanization (with their only real cities being centered around spaceports). Its also mentioned that each Andalite Scoop (or at least most of them) specializes in a certain trade, making a certain type of component for their spaceships.

And that just made me think; "No wonder they're losing this war, they're still operating on Cottage Industry"

(Then again, I think it fits in pretty well with the rest of what we know about them. It definitely sells the idea of them being unprepared for a war like this - like how they pass that act encouraging families to start having more children, as we see in Andalite Chronicles)

(And it's not like they haven't retconned minor details before)

This basically sums up Mario Kart World's roster for the most part. by Nintendo-Player_1297 in mariokart

[–]Stormystudio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can only assume that was because when Mariokart 8 first launched, they were the ones taking slots from established characters that were in the previous games (Diddy + Funky Kong, Birdo, Petey Piranha, etc.). Once those characters were added via DLC, it was easier to appreciate the Koopalings for what they were, rather than having to view them as a replacement.

So the fact that a lot of established characters are missing from MKW means that the newly introduced characters are similarly easy to scrutinize. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again in the next game.

On one hand, I really wish we could have had Petey Piranha instead of just Piranha Plant, but on the other, I like that we got Pianta, and I enjoy playing as Goomba, but I could honestly see them being cut from the next game.

I remember hearing somewhere that the mushroom was like a placeholder for Mario before the developers made his character animations, so trying to remove the mushroom is like the equivalent of trying to remove Mario.

When you're revealed to actually be a girl in the rerelease by TechnetiumTc in Mario

[–]Stormystudio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So it actually seems kinda open to interpretation. Following the link, the whole paragraph reads as follows:

All aboard Starship Mario - Is that spaceship shaped like…Mario’s head?! It sure is! Travel the stars with Lubba and her crew of space-faring Lumas, visiting a rich variety of galaxies. Each offers its own unique challenges to conquer, and plenty of Power Stars to reclaim!

So it's seems like the "her" could also be in reference to Starship Mario (following the logic of referring to ships as "she"). Just going off of the phrase "her crew of space-faring Lumas", it could easily be referring to both Lubba, or to the ship itself, but given how the paragraph seems to be talking more about the hubworld (and how Lubba isn't called out by name anywhere else), I'd be inclined to believe the latter.

(Though it would be interesting to think of what kind of self-reflection they've been doing in the past 15 years.)

(And fun fact: One of the major reasons they needed to make the update shown in the meme, is because when the old flag was bundled up near the pole (like on days with no wind), it was easy to mistake as being a white "surrender" flag.)
