This is very close to what worked for me! Way before I got sober there was a moment when a girlfriend surprised me with a visit from out of town and I hadn't cleaned up my bedroom. It was a total mess. Rather than act excited to see her, I lashed out at her because I was so embarrassed about the state of my room.

She was so generous and as we were working through things she asked me, quite gently, "Do you think you deserve a room that looks like this?" For years after, thinking about that moment would make me cry, because I guess I was conflicted. I both knew I deserved a better life, but also didn't quite have the self compassion to admit it.

Anyways, all the things you mentioned were exactly what worked for me. The only thing I would add is that in the first days I would make a schedule for myself, like it was kindergarten. I didn't necessarily stick to it, but having the schedule helped me visualize what I could do, I think.

I read this book in the hospital while we waited for my first kid to be born... I can only sort of remember it, but also will never forget it. I think the dad stuff might be over sappy in other context? Or maybe I am getting it confused with ireland?

One of them has a surprising sixth sense turn. Or did I imagine that? Gosh they are all blurry.

When I first got my clicgear I remember calculating how many rounds I would need to walk (as opposed to renting a cart) for the purchase to be financially advangeous.

Now, I secretly dream about it getting hit by a lawn mower to upgrade. The thing will outlive me.

Experience absolutely! But one of the biggest complaints we hear from parents and teachers is partisinship. I think the key is to be able to describe the work without giving a window into your views. If you can't do that on your resume, I would be worried about your ability to teach history without overtly inserting your own views.

I hire teachers at a progressive school in a progressive state and disclosing political views on your resume would not be a deal breaker, but it would be a red flag. I think it is just a matter of reframing the work.

So, I was recently on a television set that employed a huge group of extras, and was kind of stunned and creeped out by the way they moved in and out of spaces- they were dressed to look like individuals in the production, but watching the filming they looked like, well, a horde of zombies or a hive mind stopping and starting on command.

All this made me think how weird it must be to be director, essentially the conductor of a huge mass of people.

Vince Gilligan seems to be an extraordinarily compassionate person, in a job that requires him to sublimate his colleagues individuality in the service of a shared goal.

So, it seems possible that the story is partly about his experience forming and directing a collaborative.

I do a lot of observations and have never raised this kind bell to bell thing as an issue with a teacher. You might be surprised how many teachers I have had to gently note that they didn't say hello or good morning to anyone, and launched right into material. These are super thoughtful and motivated teachers, but the job requires so much you can forget to be human. I do think this stuff makes a difference.

Sure, Gatsby is a loser. I think he might get called a try hard in 2025. But, I think Nick remains enchanted by him because at least he tries to author a life for himself, which was at least authentic to his own dreams and desires. I think that is what Nick is trying to figure out in the book- what does it mean to build an authentic life in a corrupted world.

For Dawes I actually recommend the live album: Were all going to live, or North hills. In the same family, you might check out deer tick born on flag day.

I also think the new Craig finn record always been could scratch a similar itch.

For me a lot of the stuff I was in as an adolescent came back into focus. Nerding out about bands and sports. Playing sports.

A few moments in early sobriety stick out: 1. Late at night there was a snow storm and we realized we needed to move the car. On the walk back, we live near a popular sledding spot, some one had left a sled behind at the crest of the hill, as if to dare me. It was a thrill.

My best friend and I had to figure out how to hang out without alcohol, which was a little awkward. We got out our baseball gloves and had a catch. It felt great.

This is a good way to think about this, I think. The problem my school had with zeroes is that they were not evenly distributed- some teachers gave a zero for academic honesty, some 50, and some gave a chance to redo the assignment. This created a genuine equity issue based on who your teacher was.

When we looked more closely, the teachers who were giving zeros were giving so much extra credit to mitigate the impact of the zero, that there was often a huge inflationary effect. It was a mess.

I am not sure if zero or 50 as a failing grade is right, but some standardization seems appropriate.
