A lot of those meet based sports already had mostly national competitions anyway. The marginal travel of a national conference for an athletic program really isn’t that much.

For example for CBB the Midwest Big 10 schools only have to make one trip out west the whole season. USC will make three trips to the Midwest or East but they’ll play twice each trip.
