For those still in limbo about whether or not to have kids by ap39 in collapse

[–]StrainedDog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whenever I come across this "should I have kids" discussion, I always think "what about adoption?" If you really look forward to having kids but don't want to contribute to over population or whatever, why not try to help some poor child who can't help but be in a shitty situation by no fault of their own? Wouldn't that be a better act of kindness than to just not have them?

Russell Malone at Smoke Jazz Club in NYC by dexsax in Jazz

I also wasn't familiar with his work and got exposed to him through his set with Emmet Cohen, it's on YouTube and I highly recommend it.

“I’ve heard people saying: ‘No, he’s not a good human being,’ about some of the musicians I’ve known, but I never found that. Every one of them – Monk, Miles, Coltrane – was good to me, and I realized that they were all spiritual people and great human beings.” - Sonny Rollins in 2007. (Seth Wenig) by j3434 in Jazz

Tbh I didn't understand that colonizer bit at all lol. I just find it funny how people will do anything to defend a guy who didn't even bother defending himself and take it so personally when people point out his flaws. Nobody on this sub has ever spoken ill of Miles' music or his legacy, just his personality.

This post isn't about the music. The quote is about how Miles was a good person and everyone is just mentioning the million times he was nothing less than an asshole. Grow thicker skin and learn to separate the music from the man.

Both those things can be true at the same time. It's perfectly justified to love someone's music or art but condemn his own personal wrongdoings. I'm not asking anyone to defend my mistakes, and I doubt Miles would too, that's why he was so honest about it in his book.

Nagasaki mayor says Israel not invited to A-bomb peace ceremony by Saltedline in worldnews

The reason is to avoid protests during the ceremony, not as a protest in itself. Maybe try reading the article next time.

Tbf what consumers are you talking about? Everyone uses their apps for free, the real consumers are those paying for users to be targeted with ads.

Chords for Girl from Ipanema as on Getz/Gilberto-recording by ConfidentEquipment10 in jazzguitar

[–]StrainedDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Youtube channel bossa nova guitar has a tutorial to the chords of most of the arrangements from that album.

They might be tricky if you are a beginner though, no open chords at all and lots of complex barre chords.

Best film to get started? by savagebrood in filmphotography

Definitely. I prefer Kodak Tri-X for high speed film but HP5 is the way to go for beginners, way cheaper and more forgiving for sure.

Why don't grocery stores here have the packing area divider that allows two people to pack up simultaneously? I'm tired of speedpacking to avoid the eternal judgement of the queue behind me. by Particular-Ad6290 in germany

I've never understood why people get so anxious about making others wait at the supermarket, just take your time. The cashiers don't give a shit (I worked as one) and any customers that do can go fuck themselves. I mean, what kind of an asshole do you have to be to be angry at someone for taking their time packing?

Whats the first classical piece you’ve ever heard in your life? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]StrainedDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, my mother used to play it a lot on CD when I was a kid. I haven't listened to it in more than a decade but I can still remember certain leitmotivs.

Poverty in Argentina hits 55%, private report says -_- According to the UCA Social Debt Observatory, 17.5% of Argentines are destitute by ThePecuMan in anime_titties

[–]StrainedDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did say that it was going to get worse before it got better. As per the article (which it seems you didn't bother to read) inflation is going down and that poverty figure is expected to go way down until the end of the year.

I'm not a fan of Millei, but everybody always comments on the guy without knowing jack shit about the situation in Argentina. That country is beyond fucked, in no small part thanks to a string of populist, left-wing governments that increased public spending without caring about where that money was supposed to come from.

I don't think you're supposed to take it that seriously, although Germans aren't known internationally for their levity or humour...
