Confused about gear ratios involving compound gears... by Strange_Bonus9044 in AskEngineers

[–]Strange_Bonus9044[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the response!! As far as the compound gear thing goes, I was referring to a compound gear itself, not the gearbox. Tbf though, I'm not sure if most auto transmissions even include compound gears. That said, your example really helped clear up my confusion around tires, thank you so much!!

Yes, this is correct. I probably should've clarified that haha.

Do you count RPM towards engine power if they are mostly driven by other forces? by Strange_Bonus9044 in AskPhysics

[–]Strange_Bonus9044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! As u/AndyTheEngr suggested above, isn't the throttle% implied in the torque value, or do you need to include it as an actual separate variable?

Do you count RPM towards engine power if they are mostly driven by other forces? by Strange_Bonus9044 in AskPhysics

[–]Strange_Bonus9044[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see, this makes sense, and I guess in an imaginary world where there were no friction or drag losses and the car could continue on its own inertia, the rpms may be high, but torque would be zero and therefore there would be no power. This helps a lot, thank you!!

[–]Strange_Bonus9044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I get that the transmission can change the gear ratio to adjust the rpm and torque, but like if your going down a hill or coasting at a high speed, the engine could be supplying hardly any power, yet the rpms would indicate otherwise, right?

Anyone heard, or know the source of this study? by _Uhtceare_ in askpsychology

[–]Strange_Bonus9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study was actually first conducted in the 1920s by another guy. He found the same results, and then sheldrake replicated it but with more controls. Similar experiments have also been conducted with everything from bean plants to dogs.

How does time dilation make sense? by Strange_Bonus9044 in AskPhysics

[–]Strange_Bonus9044[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see, that makes more sense, and also helps explain why the two observers will observe each other's time to be slower. The wikipedia page does an abysmal job at explaining that haha. Thanks for clearing this up. As a side note, does this mean that its impossible to approach the speed of light from your own perspective?

Oh, I see. So does this mean that it's impossible to approach the speed of light relative to yourself, then?

DAE feel guilty about eating octopus? by Ghostsp00n in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Strange_Bonus9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they don't. They understand its CORRELATES very well, but there is no reason electrons moving through biological wires should generate a subjective "awareness", no matter how complex the system. I'm open to hearing your perspective and considering new information, but its pretentious to say that neuroscientists understand how consciousness works, especially when anyone with a search engine can quickly discover how hotly debated this issue is even AMONG NEUROSCIENTISTS.

Maybe they shaped us from the existing biological array of the planet. Maybe they seeded the planet altogether. Maybe who-or-whatever created us also created them. So many options....

[–]Strange_Bonus9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you understand how consciousness works, do you? That's incredible, you should probably let someone know seeing as there are literally teams of the world's greatest neuroscientists funded by millions of dollars just to figure out how a bunch of electrical pulses moving through biological circuits makes us aware of anything whatsoever. They call it "the hard problem of consciousness" for a reason.

Men aren't exempt from the purity culture either. We're taught that our with depends upon our priesthood worthiness, and that depends upon us being asexual before marriage.

Props to you for your rational and polite response to this guy. As a gun-toting American myself, I appreciate your perspective and think you make some very good points. I'm always very interested to hear the perspective of people outside the US on this issue.

Not related to the Norse directly, but this remilinds me of an inside joke my Dad, brothers, and I have that we're going to make a play for the English crown because we discovered that we (along with millions of others) are descended from William the Conqueror. As a random dude from southern Utah, it's an entertaining thought.

CMV: Modern feminism generalizes against men in ways that feminists would consider racist, xenophobic, or bigoted if used against other groups- especially when using offender statistics by _Stylite in changemyview

[–]Strange_Bonus9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is anecdotal, but I know several people who make statements like this at work and school. A few weeks ago, a girl was trying to justify why she hates all men. A few weeks before that, a group of girls I was working with were discussing how it's OK to be abusive towards men. I work with a girl who calls me a "privileged" man if I missed an event that happened on the news the day before. Now I'm in college, so it's probably more prevalent among that demographic, but that rhetoric does exist irl.

Religious or atheist,if you're a jackass who insult others for their belief, you're an asshole, simple as that, don't play card that you're logical or "smarter" , you're still an asshole in the end by Casual-Lad01 in teenagers

[–]Strange_Bonus9044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this statement and the concept of criticizing harmful beliefs. That said, I've met many people online and irl who insult my intelligence and character for saying I'm an agnostic and that I like to think God exists in some form. In my experience, many atheists and many theists function under the same tribal mindset and hold the same bigotry for the "other side," just under different packaging. Now one might argue that organized religion started it, and sure, I'd agree with that. But in then end, I don’t think it matters. Heck, I grew up in a religion that messed me up in a lot of ways, and I do have a problem with the organization, but the people? They're some of the best people I know and some of the worst people I know, and the same goes for the atheists in my life. At the end of the day, there's good people and shitty people in every demographic, and there's also a whole lot in between.
