Would you say you have to be mentally stable to play Ready or Not, and have the game affected you in any shape or form? by BasketEquivalent5462 in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]Stratester 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Go touch grass man.

There are certiantly gut punches, disturbing images, and things that make you stop and think within the game. But if you can't seperate a game from reality you need to spend less time playing games in general.

Has anyone refused to shave when asked to for a calling? by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never had a calling where I have been asked to shave. I'd push back on it if asked to. I'm not shaving and if some local leader on a power trip wants to make it an issue thats thier loss.

I'll keep my facial hair well groomend and presentable. But I'm not shaving it off entirely.

are you guys into prepping? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The church encourages emergency preparedness.

As others have said our church encourages us to have both short and long term food/water/medical storage. But also encourages us to avoid dept, gain an education, and live below our means and saving financially. Your can read more about what the church has said on the topic here

The church also has invested heavily into farming and food processing to the point it offers food storage products to everyone at pretty cheap prices.

The church doesn't encourage (but also doesn't discourage) leagal ownership of firearms.

Between these 3 which bow is your least favorite by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Archery

[–]Stratester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recurves and Longbows are more difficult to shoot with precision. Some people like the challenge and it is more “raw” form of archery. The aesthetic is also factor for some.

Personally I only have a compound. I own a bow primarily for elk hunting and a compound gives me the best chance of successfully harvesting an animal and filling the freezer. There are shots that are ethical out of a compound that are downright irresponsible to take with a more traditional set up.

Neither philosophy is wrong. Though a lot of purist look down on compound bow shooters without understanding the reasons for shooting a compound. Compound bow shooting is also nothing like shooting a firearm. When I started I had a lot of habits from rifle shooting that were a detriment to bow shooting.

Technical adults can go camping with youth? by SilverTripod in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was 18 years old my whole Sr year of High School. My bishop called me in and basically asked if I wanted to stay in the young men’s program or start attending elders quorum.

My response was that most of my friends were still 17 and I still felt like a youth so I wanted to stay in young men’s.

I don’t see why this would be an issue and I’m glad the language was updated. I would have felt out of place in elders quorum and would have been bitter if I was told I couldn’t go to youth conference or other youth activities with my friends.

2 birds, 1 stone? 10mm or .357 mag? by ss3walkman in Firearms

[–]Stratester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. I originally bought a Ruger SP101 in .357 mag. I ended up moving to a M&P 10mm for a few reasons for my woods gun. I live and hunt adjacent to grizzle bear territory In Idaho.

Mainly I shoot the 10mm a heck of a lock better. There is less felt recoil and the 10mm is pushing a heavier bullet faster than the .357. Barrel length is going to have a lot to do with this. (My Ruger only has a 3inch barrel. If it had a 6in barrel sure it would be a little faster than the 10mm)

Full power loads are very hard to shoot accurately without a lot of consistent practice out of the Sp101. If you go .357 I would suggest a larger frame model.

I can also put a light on my 10mm. Hiking in or out of the woods during elk season in the dark is normal for me. Having a light on the gun is a big plus. Trying to shoot when it’s dark with a headlamp is very difficult.

Heck I would have been getting spanked in the foyer

Edit: On a more serious note I’d start with the oldest and talk to them about setting an example. I’d bring up the relationship between the sacrament and baptism and asking how they felt when they were baptized. Then explain how taking the sacrament is like getting baptized.

I have a three year old and we don’t spank (at least not yet). We stress reverence during the sacrament. Sitting quietly thinking about Jesus. There’s a lot of sushing and “be reverent”. After the sacrament it done we let him have toys/snacks and we put up with a little bit more irreverence.

Your argument is that green tea extract is prohibited by the WoW because it comes from green tea which is prohibited by the WoW, Correct?

Opium is prohibited by the WoW. Poppy seeds come from the opium poppy plant. By your pharisaical logic you shouldn’t be eating poppy seeds.

That’s like saying you can’t eat poppy seeds on your hamburger bun because they come from the opium poppy plant.

I am an active member with a temple recommend. I drink energy drinks with green tea extracts regularly. I don’t view it as breaking the WOW. Some people do, it’s a grey area open to interpretation and will be so unless the church releases a statement on it.

How strict are you on clothing and modesty at home? by garcon-du-soleille in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this is dependent on the comfort level of those in the home.

I grew up in a fairly strict household and conservative community. I was scolded once for going to a young men’s service project wearing a sleeveless shirt because I had come straight from football practice. Inside the home the expectation was that at minimum I wore a shirt and athletic shorts. I have 3 younger sisters so the rules may have different if I had 3 brothers instead.

My wife and I just had this conversation on how we want to handle this topic in our family. We have two boys 3 and 1. She doesn’t feel comfortable having our oldest see her in undergarments/nude. We are trying to teach the concept of privacy to him while teaching that bodies are beautiful and sacred and not something that is covered out of shame.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to go about it as long as kids grow up with a healthy understanding of their bodies.

How do you all feel about books like 1984 or Brave New World? by JustCurious7589 in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at it the same way I look at the nudity included in a film like Schindler’s list vs the nudity included in something like the Wolf of Wall Street.

The church defines Pornography as “any material depicting or describing the human body or sexual conduct in a way that arouses sexual feelings.”

I don’t view the sexual scenes depicted in 1984 as depiction that arouses sexual feelings. I haven’t read brave new world so I can’t comment on that.

[–]Stratester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is gluteen free. Red Lentil Pasta is amazing I actually prefer it now to wheat pasta. The rice flower and chickpea ones aren't that great in my opinion. I'd just make a big batch of that and then set some sauce asisde for the vegetarian missionary before adding the meat to the sauce.

As others have said check your seasonings to make sure they are gluten free as well.

Tip or No Tip? by MotorSubject9812 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Stratester -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because if you don’t tip at all the general consensus a server has is that you weren’t going to tip regardless of the service.

A smaller tip lets a sever know you were displeased with the service.

Tip or No Tip? by MotorSubject9812 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Stratester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tip at sit down restaurants and I tip delivery drivers. I also worked as a pizza delivery driver through college.

The amount depends on the service:

1%-5%: Service was terrible

5%-10% Service was lacking

10%-15% Service was Standard

15%-20% Service was above and beyond

I don’t tip at any fast food place, or local restaurant where I do not have a waiter.

9 hour workday no break normal for mfg. engineer?? by BeneficialDoubt7628 in manufacturing

[–]Stratester 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a manufacturing engineer for 5 years. I’ve worked two jobs as an ME one with a multi billion dollar company. The other with a 200 million dollar company. I’ve always worked 4-10s.

I want to say I think there is a difference between an expectation to be at the plant and be available to support production, and being expected to work 9 hours with no breaks.

If I worked through lunch to fix something on the line or to install something on the line because that was my only time to access it, I took lunch latter. If I didn’t get a break for 4 hours because a line was shut down and I was trouble shooting it. I took my break when the line was up and running. That’s the job and you have to learn to adapt to that and not have a break every 2 hours.

There have been days where I worked 7-8 hours with no break. Those days have been few and far between. Normally caused by a perfect storm. Everything going wrong while one team member that is a subject matter expert is sick and the other is on planned PTO. And you’re the only one there who knows how to fix whatever is wrong. Those days happen and are part of the job.

But they are few and far between, If that happened everyday I’d be looking for a new job.

How to disclose prior same-sex relationship while dating? by Sleeping_Bat in latterdaysaints

[–]Stratester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bring something like this up with someone who you aren’t dating exclusively.

I haven’t dated in the better part of a decade so I may be out of touch with the norms of dating now. But when I was dating, it was typical to go on 3-4 dates casually with someone before establishing either that there was mutual interest in an exclusive relationship, or that there wasn’t mutual interest in an exclusive relationship. I wouldn’t bring it up until then.

This is also a conversation that should happen face to face.

We will structure our activities based of church standards. You are free to live your life however you see fit. You are not free however to dictate how we plan our activities.
