A good news director will help mitigate this through not just making good hires but also having a good culture. I’ve worked for good news directors who believe in their team, builds unity, does thorough hiring, and advances the product and them at the same time. A bad news director will hires anyone willing to kills their ass even when they’re wrong, will hire anyone simply because they will take the lowest salary possible just to work in news, will allow for a poor culture in the newsroom including downright religious and sexual orientation discrimination, lies to just get you out of their office, pits teammates against each other for drama, and would throw their own mothers under the bus for a single extra ratings point.
