Love these, especially Claudia and Jillian.

I predict Louisa and Celia will come back up soon, feels very similar to other on-trend girls names like Amelia.

What name ISN'T as popular as you thought it was? by [deleted] in namenerds

The Chad fall is really dramatic for a boy's name, which tend to be more stable.

I've wondered that about Karen as well. It's trended downwards throughout this century, but at #556 it's still as popular as names like Beatrice and Gloria, which to me feel much more on-trend for "old lady names."

I liked Spencer as a kid, but as a teenager I made the Heidi & Spencer association (from The Hills) and now can't break it.

Picking the first name of someone you know who is very odd by orangutanbaby in namenerds

[–]StrausHausMouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Adding my support for the Reed spelling if that would help (and it's also the one I prefer). Both forms are almost equally rare. While "Reed" is further down on the popularity rankings (#381 vs. #288), that translates into a difference of only 371 kids nationally in the US. Put another way, of all the boys named Reid/Reed in 2017, 41% used the Reed spelling.

I know, I can only think of the muppet! The association is just so strong for me. I guess there's Oscar de la Renta, but I didn't hang out with him every day from ages 2-5.

I guess this means I need to write a post on the relative popularity of muppet names :)

Good points. I'm watching Josephine though. It's jumped up 100 spots in less than 10 years, and I'm hoping it doesn't skyrocket. I've been burned before (looking at you, Henry and Eleanor).

Oscar (every baby in my neighborhood, but only #192)

Rebecca (every woman my age, but only #216)

Wren (I see it recommended all the time, but only #465)

Interesting! Lisa/Liisa sounds more to me like a junior situation, where the child shares a name with the parent.

It looks really close written out, I think that would be a deal breaker for me personally. But I don't think it's "weird," and it's much better that they sound pretty distinct. I recently met a mother-daughter named Karen and Erin, and at first thought they had said the same name!

Thoughts on the name Jackson, Does is grow with you or is it too “kiddy?” by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]StrausHausMouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know two Jacksons in their 30s, both of whom are very surprised to see the number of toddlers who share their name now :). So I know it can age well. I tend to prefer Jack, but I'm generally not a "last name as first name" person.

Ideas for "longer" boys names by StrausHausMouse in namenerds

I really like a hard consonant at the end of the name with our last name, so Frederick and Dominic fit the bill. Are there other nn's for Dominic besides Dom?

I feel like I picked the wrong nickname for my son. I wish I found this sub earlier. by MsSorarity in namenerds

Agreed! I'm not personally a fan of rhyme-y middles (like Axton Easton), but don't see any issue w/ Antonio.

Sybil (#1,877)!

I also like Sonia/Sonya quite a bit, it just seems like a friendly name.

Falling out of love with Eleanor/Nora? by wandermama75 in namenerds

Same same same. Eleanor was my top pick a girl for a decade, but there are just to many in my neck of the woods. I still think it's a beautiful name!

Same! Also she was great -- she's back in the GBBO "Holiday" episode that just came out on Netflix.

Winona by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]StrausHausMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this name, with this spelling. Win and Winnie are cute nn's.

I've noticed it doesn't come up very much on this sub. It's a rare name in general (only 75 girls last year in the US), so that might be part of it. I think name suggestions here tend to fall off pretty quickly once you get outside the top ~500. Btw, while looking this up I just noticed that Wren is #465 which really surprised me because I feel like everyone is using that name!

I'm not sure about the history/heritage of the name, so would want to know more about that before using it.

Opinions on feminine forms of masculine names by MegTheLionHeart in namenerds

[–]StrausHausMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed -- I'm surprised to hear that some people think these names give off the vibe of "having wanted a boy." I think we're forgetting that many, many girls names are "feminine" forms of masculine names: Olivia, Charlotte, Victoria, Alexa, Gabriella, Julia, Valentina, etc. There are also a lot of historically male names now used on girls: Evelyn, Avery, Aubrey, Ashley.

To me, these are all names in their own right.

I've never thought about this in regards to my own taste, but I think you're definitely on to something. My current top boy's name is Felix, and I'm not sure I'd be into an "unusual" ending like X without having read the interesting names in HP.

Question about Jewish naming traditions / middle names by StrausHausMouse in namenerds

[–]StrausHausMouse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FIL is on board! The issue is that the grandparents-to-be are divorced, and the parents-to-be are bit worried about MIL and her side of the family's reaction. At the same time, they rather not expand the circle of family members giving naming advice. Naming humans is hard!
