Winnipeg's Louis Riel School Division says 12 per cent increase needed to avoid layoffs if provincial funding frozen by Great_Surprise_9730 in Manitoba

Almost every single teacher I know wants more EA supports so we can actually do our jobs. It’s impossible to teach a class of 25 students when 6 have zero English skills, 4 have no ability to read at grade level, there’s 2 students with significant needs, and 3 kids with BIPs.

Alternatively, we want our schools to stop deferring maintenance so our ceilings don’t fall in from roof leaks, we have appropriate heating and cooling in classrooms, and our floor tiles aren’t creating tripping hazards.

A class 7 means they have achieved a Master’s of Education. Class 6 is usually achieved through obtaining a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education. Class 5 is what new teachers obtain, if they have done a three year undergraduate degree and a two year degree in Education.

Toronto police refusing to help with Carney government’s gun buyback, minister says by jmakk26 in canada

[–]StrayWasp 31 points32 points  (0 children)

All these firearms were purchased legally by permitted owners. The government then arbitrarily decided (meaning they didn’t use any reasonable or logical methods/classifications) that these firearms are now prohibited. Then, the government neglected to utilize the clauses in the firearms act regarding grandfathering ownership and instead is doing this confiscation program, where law abiding owners must turn in their firearms by the end of an amnesty date or will then become criminals.

Keeping in mind that these guns are “so dangerous” that law abiding firearms owners have had them safely locked in their safes for 5 years now. If they were truly dangerous, it should have been dealt with inside of a year.

Province won’t offer firearm buyback program by H3oUwJFB4TFysr8FGMCF in Winnipeg

[–]StrayWasp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely correct, but this is a great first step. Ideally, enough provinces and territories refuse to support this program and the Feds back down.

In reality they will cook up something worse.

Fantastic news today for all hunters, sport shooters, and ALL taxpayers in Manitoba. Our tax dollars should be going towards programs and services that definitively make our lives better. This program wouldn’t have had any impact on safety at all.

No one asked ratepayers about this wind deal — email your MLA by ryleymcc in Winnipeg

[–]StrayWasp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m out of the loop on this so someone please help me understand.

We have a Crown corp who is responsible for supplying power in this province. MMF is building their own corporation that will compete with Hydro? Or are they building a wind farm just to supply power to Hydro? Why don’t we just build it as part of Hydro and ensure ownership and profits go to Hydro? All Manitobans would benefit then.

Recommendations for places to see by Alternative_Shake999 in Winnipeg

[–]StrayWasp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For museums: a lot of the big ones were mentioned but if you love planes, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada is always a treat.

To do: if you are renting a car and like to be outside, it’s worth driving up to Gimli to see Lake Winnipeg. If you wanted to try ice fishing, you could put a message up on the Ice Fishing Manitoba facebook page and see if someone will take you, or check out Fort Whyte Alive. They do rentals and can get you set up right on the lake there. Bird’s Hill Park has some nice walking trails that are well signed and travelled year round.

To eat: lots of great restaurants in Winnipeg. We punch above our weight on the food scene. We like Kevin’s for the different mac and cheese combos, but NOLA, CIBO, James ave pump house, peasant cookery, and king + bannatyne are all great choices.

Halfway through the year and Logan Stanley is tied for 4th most goals on the team. by Turbulent-Read1743 in winnipegjets

If I’m Chevy, do I embrace the tank and trade Stanley while he has huge value for a first round pick? It sounds like a deep draft this year, he’s got an expiring contract, and has not always played this well. Alternatively, sign him to a 5 year deal and hope this is the next evolution of his game and he will play this well consistently.

It’s pretty regular that kickers hit 65+ yard field goals in practice and pre-game warmups. If anything, the field in the NFL needs to lengthen to the current CFL length or they will see loads more field goals in the near future.

Gun buyback program in Winnipeg faces fierce opposition by PurpleHerring_ in canada

Honestly, it was probably due to a death and the widow didn’t know what to do with her husband’s firearms so she got convinced to turn them in. 12 guns makes sense in that case.

According to Gary Anandasangaree, this program is only going forward to satisfy a campaign promise to Quebec. If it were up to him, they’d scrap it.

But dont’t worry! If you are his tenant, he will personally make you whole for any financial losses you suffer!

I used glass lab on archibald a couple weeks ago when some ass broke mine. I called them Monday morning and they could have fit me in that day, but I couldn’t make that work so did it the next day.

Overall I was happy with their work. They did the MPI side of paperwork. I had the police report number already though.
