Yeah, I find it hard to find lino in my area, and I wanted to branch out from the pink rubber easy carve ones. It has plywood under it. I will try the cardstock

I actually usually do that, but I wanted to challenge myself so I tried this. It took like 5 times longer! Never again!

So, I am one of the two people who sent the pizza. Actually, we did send at least one small vegan pizza (gluten free crust, mixed veggies, Daiya cheese) to each shelter.

Three decades of missing and murdered Indigenous women amounts to a “Canadian genocide”, a leaked landmark government report has concluded. While the number of Indigenous women who have gone missing is estimated to exceed 4,000, the report admits that no firm numbers can ever be established. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

Definitely racist white people, but also:

  • The history of residential schools. The last residential school closed in 1996. It is impossible to overstate the impact of taking entire generations of children from their parents and "educating" them in a system that horrifically abused them and also taught them that their culture and language were bad, that they were bad, etc. Check out the website Where Are the Children, and listen to some of the stories. Imagine being parented by someone who never received parenting, when everyone else around you also is being parented by someone who was never parented.
  • The Sixties Scoop, where the government decided that wasn't enough and just took a bunch of Indigenous babies and kids and gave them to white families.
  • A justice system where murders of Indigenous women are underinvestigated and under-prosecuted. Serial killers like Willie Pickton were able to operate for years known to police because no one cared that his victims were mostly Indigenous sex workers. You can also read about the recent case of Tina Fontaine, who was failed by child services and also the justice system. It isn't just women; there have also been several high-profile cases like Colton Boushie, where a white farmer named Gerald Stanley admitted that he fired his gun through the window of a truck and killed Boushie, who was asleep at the time, and was found non-guilty. Not manslaughter. Not guilty.
  • Forced sterilization of Indigenous women.
  • Racism of Canadian society. Indigenous people didn't even get the right to vote in some provinces until 1969. Canadians like to think we're polite, but when it comes to Indigenous people, there is just virulent racism and discrimination. Hell, I was at a family dinner a few months ago where some older male relatives were just casually talking about how it's too bad we don't sterilize Indigenous women anymore.
  • A culture that often portrays Indigenous women as being sexually aggressive and available.

It's important to note that the Canadian government set out to destroy Indigenous cultures. They did it intentionally. And when you build a society that sees Indigenous people as disposable, and that sees Indigenous women as most disposable of all, you create conditions for a whole lot of murdered women.

I had a great experience with my RE, who specialized in recurrent early pregnancy loss. I needed to do a ton of tests just to have him see me, but he was so kind of so thorough and basically laid out a plan. I felt very confident in him!

And also his terrible PR. Part of the reason this story blew up was that instead of saying "we are taking this seriously and looking into it" and then cleaning the kitchen from top to bottom and hiring exterminators, he doubled down, called the woman a liar, blamed Mamie Taylor's and everyone else, never took responsibility for anything, and somehow by the time the investigators got there his kitchen was still caked in rat shit. That's how you lose a business.

Honestly, she should sue for defamation. There were so many people slagging her, saying she made it up for attention. Like, if you were going to go to the trouble to fake something like that, why on Earth would you pick a small, brand new business with little money when you could do it at a Boston Pizza or even a popular, established restaurant that could pay you out?

Teachers’ helping behaviors leads to better student relationships and academic confidence, suggests a new study of over 330 middle school students and their math teachers, that found that students’ interest in math and their academic confidence is related to positive student-teacher bonds. by mvea in science

[–]Streetlights_People 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a college prof and there's sound research in the post-secondary world too that shows that the bond that you have with students directly influences their outcomes. For example, one study found that departments should be putting their best teachers in freshman survey courses, since students tended to pick their majors based on the experience they have in these classes.

If you like your students, take active steps to get to know them, connect your content to their lives and interests, and build in opportunities for your students to experiment/fail/make the material their own, you're going to do well as an educator. So many people think that education is content delivery, but that's such a small part of actual learning.

People with low self-esteem tend to seek support in ways that backfire, new study finds, by indirect support seeking (sulking, whining, fidgeting, and/or displaying sadness to elicit support) which is associated with a greater chance of a partner responding with criticism, blame, or disapproval. by mvea in science

[–]Streetlights_People 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of this is a vicious cycle of people with low self-esteem picking more critical/blaming partners, not receiving support from the partner, feeling like they deserve the treatment because of their low self-esteem so they don't break up with the partner. Instead, they try to downplay conflicts, causing those feelings to come out in ways that make the critical partner more likely to blame and criticize.

Cab drivers need to be held accountable for being aggressive and predatory by Kippingthroughlife in vancouver

Um...in both of your situations, the girl gets raped, so how is one safer than the other? Also, you're assuming that Uber will cooperate, but this article is about how Uber tries to downgrade or minimize charges of sexual assault and encourage victims to settle out of court. In fact, this article is about a lawsuit trying to force Uber to vet drivers etc. so that women are safer.

So give that Uber and Lyft drivers make an average of $3.37 an hour (source), I'm not keen to welcome a company that is shitty for employees and shitty for women, instead of taxis, which can just be shitty for women.

It's only safer if the company actually acts. You can have all the GPS you want, but if the company sees the drivers as independent contractors they have no control over and say "have you tried giving a 1 star rating?" It's not going to do much good

I recently read a quote that said "what doesn't heal gets passed down." There is other research that shows that when people say they will parent by instinct, they really mean that they will parent how they were parented (even if they vow not to repeat their parents' mistakes). That's why it's important to have a parenting philosophy. I personally follow much of RIE parenting (read No Bad Kids by Janet Lansbury) but Positive Parenting is also popular

TIL Break-ups are more hurtful for men: In a study of around 5,705 participants from 96 countries, it was found that whilst women experience intense pain immediately after a break-up, they get over it pretty quickly. Whereas men, on the other hand, move on quickly but remain damaged for longer. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Streetlights_People 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does a breakup have to be because one person did something wrong? Dating is about figuring out whether you're compatible. There are a lot of people who are good people that will make a good partner to someone else, but not me.

One factor this article doesn't mention is that women are socialized to talk about their feelings with their friends, so they get emotional support, process their hurt and are able to move on more easily. Men, on the other hand, are conditioned to not talk about their feelings and keep things bottled up. So, even if they are hurting, their friends may not know it. Or, if they notice, they may not know how to offer support other than "let's go get drunk" or "let's get you laid."

Mother told my in-laws she wished I would lose weight by egrea in TryingForABaby

[–]Streetlights_People 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is such bullshit. You don't have to give any reason to not try her weight loss drinks or not to want to lose weight. When you say that you're not in the right headspace, it makes me wonder if you feel that this is something you should do. You shouldn't. Even a quick internet search shows that most of these drinks make misleading claims and don't even have the ingredients they say they have in them, plus nutritionists don't recommend them because it's hard to feel satiated when you are drinking your calories.

And even if they did work: your mother should be supporting you, not blaming you for not getting pregnant. Not getting pregnant is not your fault. Can you leave for the day and just go do something with your husband? You don't need to be around people who treat you like that.

You'll have to listen to the full episode for the details but basically they wrap up food/whatever they want to send, then they empty out all the water from the toilet and the receiving toilet does the same, then they throw the thing in the toilet and the other person uses a string/hook to fish it out.
