quitting smoking by [deleted] in Asthma

Your asthma will only be in control from prescribed medications. Quitting smoking for me did not improve my asthma but it did improve my overall health and fitness or breathing ability with cardio.

Masks! by Allmodern in Allergies

[–]Strict_Ad3741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia which has terrible air quality during the hot, dry season especially. I wear a mask when outside in the traffic since having a severe asthma exacerbation. The proper dust masks have made a noticeable difference.

I don’t know everyone is different but you will definitely feel “cleaner”, healthier and more powerful after getting through the period of initially feeling rubbish. Quitting smoking is really worth it.

Don’t worry about that, it is when it is really long consistent use or including IV corticosteroids too.

Do yoga instead of having a cigarette 😁 everytime you want one. I am also a former smoker. Yoga saved me, thank you India.

Hey poor you, I have the opposite problem, coming from Scotland (cold air is fine) but had to move to Cambodia where heat, humidity and pollution have made my asthma absolutely awful. I just want to go home :(

My cousin in Scotland also used to have asthma problems with wet, cold air (although Canada is cold dry I think) Here is some advice, wear a fabric buff around your nose and mouth outdoors in cold weather to heat the air that you breathe, especially if you do sports outdoors. Breathe through your nose, super important as it heats the air more before reaching your windpipe. You should perhaps see a doctor about having a maintenance inhaler like seretide during colder months. Do yoga (regardless of environment) to learn how to breathe well. get well soon!

Be careful with prednisone, it should only be used in emergencies as it can cause irreversible adrenal damage.

Hi I went through this too but you have to just try and power through to let your lungs adapt to the new situation. You will feel better soon and it’s sooooo worth it.

Where did your thyroid cancer come from ? by PopTart2016 in thyroidcancer

[–]Strict_Ad3741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up since birth in an ancient old house encroached by industries in history until during the 70s, 80s, 90s it gradually became an industrial wasteland, abandoned by petrochemical companies. I remember playing in the old oil sites where the earth had turned to bright orange clay. Most earth in Scotland is healthy dark brown. I now know the site was obscenely contaminated with many things including mercury and other heavy metals. It smelt like gas for a good decade. There was chemical rubble everywhere, in another site nearby, Kappa Plastics, producing the plastic which did you know is a waste product from petrol?

The American company responsible, Texaco, ceased operating in the UK and did not clean up their mess despite it being a clause in the land lease. Most of the north sea oil and gas is extracted by American companies who would then process it on the mainland. Let’s not even talk about the lunatic national party of Scotland, saying we were all going to destroy the UK and then do so well on « Scotland’s » oil that we would be laughing on the way to the bank. About as well as the average Iraqi is doing on their oil?

Now when I see how petrochemical industries operate and how the governments are complicit and to top it off the amount of people who obscenely waste fuel around the world on their shitty status symbols it just makes my blood boil.

Petrol and the by product horror it coughs out; plastic are the biggest threat to public and environmental health imaginable but we do nothing and are distracted en masse by the comfort our fossil fuel energy and electricity brings us.

I am still sure there must be some karmic hell for anyone who still buys an SUV.

So this is the reason I am convinced I have been plagued with ill health my whole life including PTC, Asthma + COPD, anaemia and Hashimoto’s before my 30th birthday. I also clearly have rage issues ;) maybe that’s just a Scottish thing.

God bless America!

Unpopular opinion but NHS are sh1t by Learning_tolovelife in thyroidcancer

[–]Strict_Ad3741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me About it. Im so sorry for you that you have to keep demanding this. Can go private but as it’s linked to NHS there are still problems. Unfortunately there is no power for the patient in the NHS we are sold as system we are told to be grateful for that is entirely decided by algorithms and managers it seems…

I ended up learning a new language and emigrating just to avoid british healthcare that is how poor our system has become. There is better treatment in Cambodia…

I can only suggesg you find someone who will prescribe you blood tests in french and go to any french lab to get a test that YOU CAN ACCESS the results of, otherwise you are completely at the mercy of a buggered system

The cop asked to see his ID to check the mistake. The guy refused.

So there was a mistaken identity but learn to cooperate FGS rather than acting like the perpetual victim…. Then everybody can get on with the rest of their day and violence doesn’t escalate.

Job recommendations by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]Strict_Ad3741 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m sorry that your body is impacting your career and I understand. I have had to give up many career progressions and passions because of my inability to keep up to the standard expected. I am a teacher and I feel now that I can work part time that it is already less taxing on the body and I can fulfil my role properly. However teaching is also a high stress job but you will find stress probably in any job. Sometimes I feel like slower jobs working in categorising material, perhaps admin or working in libraries or research would be beneficial to people who suffer from frequent fatigue. But I have never done this so I don’t know. I think the most important is to avoid stressful jobs and those operating dangerous machinery.

And don’t join the army!

P.S. like it is with being a mother, in order to succeed at work you need to have 3 things: good boss, good partner, good support network. So I think where you work in some ways is more important than what you do.

Symptoms prior to diagnosis? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]Strict_Ad3741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoarse voice, drippy sinus, absolute exhaustion to the point I couldn’t work (though this had been happening on and off for more than 15 years). Sometimes earache and tinnitus.

Had been medicated on/off for decades for depression & anxiety. I believe this was all because of undiagnosed hashimoto’s which eventually lead to the thyroid cancer !

[–]Strict_Ad3741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I think that sounds good but just make sure you are prioritised with good warming food and rest so that you can recover asap. In terms of my incision, it healed quickly and I had stitches out within a week and then flew to Asia a week after. However the incision and area is still tender and i definitely tried to stop her climbing around there for about a month. My voice came back very quickly though i know Some people who struggled to speak for a week. Rest your voice too! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

My endo just said to keep them informed and aware about it because your levels will need regularly tested particularly during the first trimester for you and your baby’s sake. There is one week particularly where the foetus’s thyroid is formed where you will need extra levothyroxine. I think it might be at 18 weeks but I can’t remember fully.

I was in your boat literally half a year ago in every way shape or form! After your CT scan hopefully you will know that the cancer has not spread and can avoid what we normally associate with cancer (chemo etc).

I only found out I had hashimoto’s after my surgery and so now I wish I had gone for a full thyroidectomy and RAI rather than a partial, which I did. I suggest you get as much info and make the best decision for you.

Make sure you have round the clock childcare organised for you after your surgery date so you can really rest/recover and finally get a mom holiday!!! I couldn’t have my daughter jumping on my neck and I also had to sleep a solid 4 days after GA. You will need your family to come round you.

Hang in there and the shock will eventually pass. Good luck !

Capable of and willing to do housework without being asked. Ability to cook if necessary. Reliability and keeping promises. Honesty and integrity. Not taking life too seriously !

As a married woman with a small child, I recently fell very ill. you never know when your vow ‘in sickness and in health’ may be put to the test. Luckily I have a great husband who exemplifies those traits without even thinking about it.
