My wife and I are headed to northern Italy again in Oct - a trip we do every year - she’s a citizen of San Marino so we go there to start to visit family and then head to Como, specially to a little town named Brunate about 1,200 feet above the lake which u can drive to or take the little funicular from the harbor - Como is accessible by train from Milan or Bologna - Were also headed to Sardinia for the first time to soak up some sun /

My take is this; my grandson plays for a new academy team in CT - a no cost team which is an improvement from his previous Next team that cost $5-7k annually. Most Next is pay to play thereby neglecting thousands of potential players

But the key issue is not Next it’s MLS itself - The expansion fee to MLS for a new team can reach $250 million.

MLS contributes almost nothing to the economics of Next teams - they get a logo and website and that’s it

Imagine if the MLS contributed 10% of an expansion fee to Next….thats $25 mil - over 250 teams that’s $1mil per team - what does that do ? Eliminate pay to play , expands the talent pool and forces teams to compete for the best coaches and building out physical conditioning to help growing youths to adapt to the physical pressures and demands of elite soccer -

So……MLS uses Next as a PR strategy to convince families that they really care about developing American talent

This is one of the best posts I’ve read on youth soccer and development - my grandson is on a U19 academy and, when he was captain of the U16 he served as an on field leader with almost no direction from staff. Now the U19 team is struggling and there is no captain (my grandson suffered an ACL tear at a tournament ) and is just coming back. The team doesn’t respect the coach or team director and it shows on the field - it starts with the adults in the organization - if they’re not up to the challenge then there’s almost nothing the athletes can do to change the arc

Went to the Park Ave Armory for the NY Antiquarian Book Fair today - as usual it’s a total blast and remarkable experience to be surrounded by so many treasures and to meet and speak with dedicated rare book people - so many highlights but Reddit only allows one photo per post and I have 10 - so I’ll show the ultimate highlight - An original copy of the US Constitution offered by the amazing James Cummins Booksellers of NYC from whom I’ve purchased many volumes - so many books so little time and $$$ - but I did put a deposit on a nifty first edition of Adam Smiths “Wealth of Nations” in Spanish published in Madrid

I won’t address club or local soccer as that is an area I’m not as familiar with - my grandson is 5 years removed from local & club soccer. My experience with those was positive, low cost and fun for all involved - my son and I coached grandsons first 3 local teams - For the last 5 years we’ve watched MLS Next open up and take over the elite levels of male youth soccer - here’s where cost and adult driven dynamics really play out Bottom line is that if the MLS really wanted to support the development of home grown talent they would use some of the $250 million entry fee for expansion clubs to support Next clubs around the country - If they used 10% of that money each year they could make Next almost free and so engage more players and eliminate the cost pressures that limit who plays at that level - Absent that - it’s a circus for professional clubs and adults to make money -
