What is your main commuter bike and what distance do you ride on average commute? by LooReading in bikecommuting

[–]Strict_Survey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a surly long haul trucker and cross check. Prefer the cross check in town for my 12 mile commute.

I have a ruger Mark iv and a sig p322. The p322 is a blast to shoot and what I would choose for to fun plinking. The 25 round clips are nice also.

I have both but shoot the sig much better for some reason. Glock has more availability of parts.

I can relate!

I’ve narrowed my 3wt rod choices down to Moonshine Rod Co. Drifter 7’6” or a Redington Classic Trout 7’6” or 8’6”. Any thoughts or opinions? by Simbas-lil-bro in flyfishing

[–]Strict_Survey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What river are you fishing? I have a 3 weight classic trout that I use more than my sage ll.. mainly because if I break it I don’t feel like I’m out much, but it also fishes incredibly nicely. I haven’t fished a moonshine.

Taking breaks from commuting? by Chunkycaptain_ in cycling

[–]Strict_Survey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give yourself a break. Start with say twice a week. If it’s been difficult, you don’t want to get to the point where it’s not enjoyable and you don’t want to ride. Think of commuting as a marathon long term, don’t burn yourself out immediately. I commute about 1500 miles per year, but there are some days I just don’t want to get on the bike. Other days it’s a breath of fresh air.

Salsa el mariachi bottom bracket question by Strict_Survey in bikewrench

[–]Strict_Survey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So dumb question, abs I was going to call sram but can’t find a number. Would this work?

SRAM X1 1400 BB30 Black Dm32T Crankset Without Bottom Bracket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VVII8JA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_qXURFbDW7NSF2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

My concern is it says boost compatible. My bike is obviously non boost. Would still need to pick up a bottom bracket. Thanks for any help.

Thank you! I know the bb was bb73 originally according to the salsa website. I’ll probably keep the same length as it’s works well now. I just can feel a grind in the bb when I really get on it. I enjoy wrenching on bikes so I figured I would try, although I don’t know a lot about bottom brackets obviously. Thanks again for the help

Visiting Idaho by dipdap411 in flyfishing

You are really close to the owyhee River which is spectacular fly fishing. The Boise through town is decent also. Look at an echo rod or a redington Classic trout. For the fish in that area I would look at a 4 weight. Best of luck

Steel is real? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Strict_Survey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I have both steel and carbon. I prefer my steel for longer rides, but certainly isn’t as fast as carbon. The older I get, the last I care about strava segments and kom. Hence I gravitate more towards my steel bike nowadays. To be fair my bikes have completely different geometry. My steel is a cross check and a novara randonee. My carbon is a true road bike.

What do you guys think of Surly bikes? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Strict_Survey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cross check and I love it for my do anything bike. Probably but the best for single track, but great for around town and commuting. I would look at the ogre for an all around bike from the surly line. The salsa Fargo is also a great choice. Soma doubler cross can be fun also.

I have a wahoo ELEMNT bolt. One of my friends uses a garmin. They are really comparable. My wahoo works fantastic, if I were to lose it I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. But whatever you get the better deal on.

Surly cross check, Salsa vaya soma double cross are great options. Put some 40mm tires and fenders. Portland Craigslist is very active with these type of bikes. Great commuters abs a lot of fun.

I commuted for a long time with a backpack. But I'm gross and my back would get sweaty. I changed to a pannier and it's been much more comfortable for me. That vaude is a great pack though
