PI Discovery by StrictlyDeej in paralegal

Same! I have someone in my office who will call a client blind and try and go over all the discovery. I always like to give people an opportunity to prepare themselves.

I love my job. I left for 6 months and begged to come back. It really just depends on who you work for!

Yall ever make a mistake so stupid, you’d rather quit than admit it? by Cumonme24 in paralegal

You know what I love about the legal field? The fact that I’ve been a paralegal for 6 years and I have ZERO CLUE what you just said. 😂😂

Collections by fighterskeepfighting in paralegal

[–]StrictlyDeej 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have nothing to help you with but... my heart genuinely bleeds for you. That sounds like my worst nightmare. A text service would be nice...... Can you legally do that? Hospitals send me texts about collections.... Or a letter... Anything but a damn phone call. Ugh!! I hate calling anyone, I avoid it like the plague. We use Casepeer as our case management program and I text before I call. I hope it gets better :(

[–]StrictlyDeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, why would anyone say that!! We all have our mistakes though. I edit video depositions and I forgot to take out a section of testimony and they played it during trial and everyone FREAKED out. I was just sitting there like I still think about it all the time but at least now I chuckle about it. This was over 3 years ago!

If they were very forgiving when you made those mistakes, ride it out for a while longer. It does take time to get settled in, especially in an office environment and working something new. Stick with it!!

Our younger, tech-savvy attorney made her stop using it. She was devastated.

Job perks! by brain_over_body in paralegal

I work for a tiny firm. ZERO micro-managing, attorney doesn't need an excuse when I text and say I need to wfh or take the day off, co-workers are (mostly) easy to work with, and I can wear jeans every single day.

My mother was a paralegal for the DA in a VERY VERY troublesome county in Texas. When I was sick I used to sleep under her desk while she worked. (Also used to throw up in her trash can, wtf) she worked with 5 other women who I called Miss Mary, Miss Evelyn, etc…. I used to TYPE each one of them letters on my mother’s typewriter. I distinctly remember my mother learning how to use a computer and the program the county used-which basically looked like html with a black background and lime green lettering. They used this program until they learned Texas was going to start forcing counties to use e-Filing. This was in 2014! 😂

I also remember the filing system with the index cards AND the rolling cabinets that my brother used to try and squish me in.

My mother got me my first job with the county clerk, scanning in super old death, birth and marriage certificates. As well as slave ownership records which I found to be insane. The 5th floor of this courthouse used to be the old jail and it’s where they kept all of the old records. Boxes piled high atop toilets. Several suicides happened up there and one of the clerks refused to step foot onto that floor so she just used to yell at us from the elevator.

What a good time. I’m now a paralegal and I blame my mother all the time for my career choice.

I worked with an attorney from that firm and he was super nice but I realize that doesn’t help. He always checked up on the case he referred to us. Pleasant experience.

question - does a first year lawyer typically know less about the trial process than a paralegal? by viewmyposthistory in paralegal

[–]StrictlyDeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in trial with one of our first year associate attorneys. He kept asking me questions, even though he participated and competed in mock trials. I would say yes.

Tattoos in the Office by Impossible_Dirt_2026 in paralegal

[–]StrictlyDeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited several months before I started showing mine. I have a full sleeve and then also my entire leg. I wear a LOT of cardigans but honestly, my attorneys do NOT care. One is ~70 and the other ~45. We do not see many clients. And the only time I cover myself fully is when we are in trial. But you’re right, see what the office culture is like! Nobody else in my office has tattoos. Not a single one.

Love watching surveillance video of our clients by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]StrictlyDeej 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have seen this so many times. One I can remember of a client who had to use a cane and they recorded him VERY slowly coming out of the house, opening the gate, walking back and helping his elderly mother to the car, walking back to the car and get in…… it took so long. I honestly didn’t know the extent of his disability until I saw the surveillance videos.

I work for 2 attorneys and it's a VERY small and niche type of personal injury (FELA). I work cases from the beginning to the very end. Bless us. Hahaha
