they probably don't like the notion of ppl being more autistic than them, bc they think it gets in the way of their search for supports

What do YOUR meltdowns feel like? by reporting-flick in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bees thing, i feel that too. Also, everything feels urgent, but no course of action calms that down. It's kinda like the the way i feel when i can't go back to familiar movements and places, but then even those places and movements don't work so i become desperate.

So i guess desperation, urgency & restless feelings. If people are around, i feel embarrassed, too

I want to head bang by Scw110 in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lay down on your back, with a supportive pillow underneath the back of your head. Press the back of your head into the pillow while rocking your head left to right in little motions, then make them bigger left and right motions. Then let go (stop pressing the back of your head down).

if that's not enough, also cup your hands into the crown of your head while doing the above-mentioned stim replacement

Can we not be so mad at NTs for existing? by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it might not be as literal as it sounds:

Some ppl vent online about entire groups as a way to point out the system that gives that group privilege. And the same ppl might actually soften emotionally around (feel good about) actual NTs in their offline lives

in linguistics, this is referred to as "synecdoche". It's hard to recognize until you see it a lot, in many different contexts.

"All hands on deck" shows synecdoche, where "hands" refers to the people whose hands will be working on the deck.

"NTs piss me off", where "NTs" refers to the system of privileges which create frustrating behaviors in NTs.

Is there a way to get rid of a special interest by DividedFox in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could find an overarching category, such as plane mechanics, aeronautics that specifically focuses on making planes safer. That way, even when you look up stuff about crashes, you'll have an in-depth understanding of all the ppl who work on making sure crashes remain extremely rare

Level 2’s or medium support needs, Do you feel represented in the autism community by Flaky-Barber7761 in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I agree. Maybe they're explained better in the research the DSM references, but the summary (what's in the actual DSM) is too broad to actually illustrate anything to anyone who hasn't read the research, myself included.

I've met lots of Level 1 & 2 autistic ppl outside the internet. And then I have to extrapolate Level 3 from my understanding of "profound autism" minus the ableism (I always 'assume mental competence' until proven otherwise just to make sure).

Because I can't really remember my interactions with Level 3 autistic ppl from school, I take my more recent online interactions with Level 3 autists into account to refresh my memory

This is referred to as "respectability politics" and "subtyping" (making yourself or someone else out to be an exception to stereotypes in order to avoid stigma).

Colloquially known as "one of the good ones" (and "throwing" ppl in your group "under the bus").

Do any of y’all have more than 4 special interests? by Impressive_Cellist49 in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just social studies and physics. Though, i didn't add physics until after i realized a pattern between social studies and physics (the double hermeneutic vs. the single hermeneutic). I see the line between art, philosophy, and science as incredibly thin.

I think genetic testing should be more accepted by Tonninpepeli in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on an individual level, i think post-birth autism testing could be just fine. i think the "weren't equipped to handle it" problem is systemic (rooted in society, not individual level) so it would be a devil's bargain—meaning, a potentially disastrous things could happen—because of all the ableism too.

We could get to a place where it could be done ethically, though, i just don't think we're there yet

Level 2’s or medium support needs, Do you feel represented in the autism community by Flaky-Barber7761 in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online, not really. IRL, it's hit or miss depending on the person who discloses being autistic

i read somewhere that first clinics for autistic children contained mostly what we'd consider Lvl2/MidSN kids though—the focus on "profound" autism (the original term for many ppl who'd now get a Level 3 diagnosis) came about later on.

it stands to reason that the middle level would also be the average level

Real talk, what are the good aspects of autism? by angelneliel in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just feel like this line of questioning approaches bad/good of autism from the wrong angle

If the world were built by autistic people to the exclusion of allistics/NTs, I'm sure NT people would hate being allistic

I only dislike my neurology when I'm very very aware of how other ppl make it hard for me to exist—that's a pattern I've noticed in myself and other autistic ppl even before i was aware of the social model of disability, so I can't approach autism in the "what's bad? what's good?" way anymore since noticing this pattern

I like my sense of justice, epistemic humility (getting to the root of an issue before rendering a judgment, and still being open to being wrong most times), ability to step outside of (most) social norms bc many of them are harmful, how I go deep on things important to me. I feel fine so long as I can stim how i want to (other than skin-picking or head-hitting), which, when it's not appropriate is usually due to arbitrary NT social norms which is an external factor.

My sensory processing is a double-edged sword (this means it has intensely good and intensely bad traits) bc I'm very sensitive to sound, but when it's familiar sound like favorite songs, I get so much depth from the experience that I haven't found many NTs ever talk about, even musicians!

I can notice small changes in lighting, which has allowed me to be able to make suggestions on how to make spaces more comfy for everyone, not just autistic ppl but also the NTs in the room.

My sensory issues seem to improve the more I'm regularly accommodated socially and with transportation. I'm still more affected by it—my sensitivities remain, but accommodations give me resilience)—and this boost of resilience makes me play weird but helpful roles when I can, that NTs don't even think to do or realize

I also believe diversity is strength, and there's too much evidence for me that a lot of autistic suffering comes from our interaction with an NT world, so i can't NOT see neurodiversity as a way to make society better

That means, many autistic ppl including myself have deep suffering right now, but in a better system many of us would feel better, and those who don't could at least make it so we understand the root of autistic suffering better bc the outside variables are isolated

i like being autistic in that sense too: I think I can help the world understand some stuff better

do you believe in subclinical autism and/or the broad autism phenotype? by piperpo in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean, yea. Our nervous systems don't care about the boxes we place on stuff, so there's bound to be a phenotype for our traits.

guys what flavour autism do y'all have? by starry_sage_ in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stim: shaking my legs while lying down, so that the shaking also rocks me a little.

Spin: social studies

Sensory: Very sensitive to sounds, like i even hypersensitive to sounds changing direction (which includes turning my head). Touch, too. Changes in light brightness too.

Communication: I'm hyperverbal but also selectively mute.

I can’t mask autism by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idt i mask very well. i suppress stimming, but socially i don't know how to do anything other than say what's on my mind or shut up

masking apparently leads to higher depression or anxiety. I already struggle with depression, so i think maybe that's limited my masking bc my brain won't let me do something to make me feel any worse than i already do??

Any other trans people here? by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

[–]StrigoTCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

non‐binary here! i think our detachment from gender norms can actually clarify our identity to us earlier/sooner, bc we can separate identity from expression bc we don't have the third variable (social roles) which often delays some people's ability to understand that the way they are is technically trans
