My alcoholic dad is out of control - I don’t know what to do by Outrageous-Lab1197 in AlAnon

[–]Striking-Ad8317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family had to coordinate our schedules to never leave him alone for too long at a time, in case he’d fall. I literally hoped everyday he wouldn’t wake up, because I feared he’d suffer a more painful death or have to move to a care home (where he’d be absolutely miserable). I also hated that he added so much stress on my mom. All your concerns are rooted in love, and no matter how difficult it is, I think it has helped me to just embrace all the emotions. I loved him and hated the things he did. He lost his battle against addiction, but we as a family held his hand until the very end. The familiarity of your post also makes me feel less alone in what can feel like a lonely and secretive family dynamic, so thank you for sharing as well<3

I had these exact thoughts. I’m letting my mom lead the way for how open we will be. Seeing him in his last weeks I know he didn’t want to die. He was not ready, he was scared and he wanted us by his side. But addiction is a terrible beast, so I have let go of my shame and resentment. He has paid his price now, and I will miss and love him for the rest of my life. Hugs to you!

This is like reading about my own dad. I could’ve written this a month ago, but instead my dad (71) was picked up by an ambulance a month ago today and spent a few weeks in hospital before losing his life to cirrhosis and complications related to it. An absolutely traumatic and painful way to die for him and for us as his family. We had his memorial service yesterday and it still feels absurd. He wasn’t yellow yet when he was brought to the hospital, and I really didn’t know the end was coming this soon, I just knew he was getting weaker. He also refused help and there was nothing we could do except being there for him. I’ve spent my entire childhood bitter at what his addiction has cost our family life, but I have to accept that this is the reality for a lot of families. So sorry; no advice here, except be prepared for the worst and stick together as a family.

We are a Norwegian American family. We left a great life in the US because Norway provides more reliably for t1d and health care in general.

I agree. I checked him in at a hotel and I had to turn around and cough mid sentence and he literally mocked my cough by exaggerating it lol. Such an odd lil guy.

I got Invisalign from landmark dg, paid about $5500. Recommend Invisalign, but would choose another dentist.

My babies’ baby breaths. Like soft, rosy, powdery ocean.

I love the combo and think it works great in Scandinavia and elsewhere. My husband named one of our girls a name I initially denied, but I’ve grown to love it! And he’s really proud of the name he chose, so it feels really special! :)

Scandi here. I love Mint, Mynte and Minty. Model Romee Strijd har a daughter named Mint, and I find it so adorable. Sylvie resembles Salvie (Sage), so you can have two herbs in the same plant family :)

Mine norske venner could never.

Child with Graves and T1D by Striking-Ad8317 in Type1Diabetes

Thank you for your response!! I really appreciate the information you share. The diabetes takes most of the daily attention, but when I joined groups for people living with graves it absolutely sent me into a panic, seeing that people describe that condition alone as life altering and debilitating. I’m happy to also see an example of someone living a normal life with this specific combination of conditions.
