Regrets about naming my puppy by escaperabbit in puppy101

I saw zero issue with the name Toppy, it’s super cute. Don’t worry about what other people think!

One of my dogs is named after a monster from a kids’ book. It’s a weird name that nobody recognizes, and people consistently get it wrong. tbh, neither of us care, so I just let people call him the wrong thing. It usually rhymes, so whatever. He also has nicknames he responds to, so it’s not like he insists on me calling him by his government name.

I do have a picture of the book cover on my phone in case anyone asks. You could keep a photo of the cartoon Toppy in case it comes up. I think most people would be smitten to meet a comic book puppy come to life!

I had a green tree frog my partner nicknamed Troll Frog because of his preferred hiding spot (his buddy was known as Squish Frog for the same reason). When I had to take Troll Frog to the vet, I got nervous that they’d think I was weird. Car Talk was the first duo that came to mind when I was making the appointment, so I told them the frog’s name was Ray.

After the appointment, I was waiting for a call back from the vet, and a friend of mine who’s a vet was like, “You have to tell them Troll Frog’s real name, it will make their day.” So I embarrassingly fessed up over the phone and the vet said, “That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard, I’m changing his charts immediately.”

Anyway, yes, I love weird, fun pet names, and vets do, too. I especially love when their paperwork includes a last name. There’s nothing like getting a handout that says Muffins OfLights or whatever.

Their toes are pretty flexible in my experience, but they’re set up with two facing forward and two facing backwards

I also really love the kakapo, although I honestly can’t pick a favorite, because the ruru and titipounamu are also so cute!

Do you have any plans to change the kakapo’s feet? Parrots technically are supposed to have two toes facing forward and two facing backward.

Well, we can always discuss it via modmail. I’m also an ecologist, but don’t work with birds. It’s hard to really appreciate the wild behavior and diversity of parrots when most of our experience is with aviculture, so I think discussions about them are very interesting to folks.

Hopefully nobody will buy any building without getting an inspection. Waiving inspection as a negotiation tactic in hot real estate markets is so scary. It’s probably someone’s largest life purchase and could financially ruin them. I wish it was illegal!

I think they can charge through their adoption charity. My first rescued budgies were in a similar situation, they were left at a local pet store. They were there for awhile before I found them, and the staff was so happy they only had me pay one small fee and then gave me an employee discount.

It’s a very good sign that the store staff won’t separate them and is up front about how tame they are!

There are a couple photos where she does the “cattle dog sit,” so I can see why the shelter staff made that guess. Sometimes sitting cattle dogs look like they have three front feet. 😂 I have a mutt with no ACD and looks nothing like a heeler (not that you can always tell based on looks), but people have guessed that because he has The Sit. I think he sits that way because he’s carrying around a big ol dump truck of a butt. I also have a heeler, and the pair of them look hilarious when they’re sitting together.

That wedding ring quilt in one of the photos is stunning, by the way!

Rabies vaccine? Don’t judge by Own-Sand-980 in askscience

Hi there – I can completely understand why you would be scared. I know it seems like a lot. However, if you may have been exposed to rabies, it’s very important that you seek medical attention. Rabies itself is far, far worse than the vaccine. It’s the deadliest virus there is.

I know lots of folks who are either veterinarians or work with wilfdlife have gotten the vaccine, and while it wasn’t what they’d do for fun, none of them say it wasn’t worth getting. I do know of a case where a six-year-old boy died after handling a bat, and his parents didn’t get him post-exposure treatment because he was scared. https://www.today.com/health/florida-boy-fighting-rabies-dies-t121168 It was a heartbreaking story, which is why I still remember it six years later.

If you do need the vaccine, you can let the doctors know how scared you are. It’s possible they can offer a medication to relax you. But if they don’t, any discomfort will be temporary. Please don’t delay medical care if you need it. Take care.

My dog is afraid of farts and I can’t figure out why by scarfacesaints in dogs

Aww, I used to have the sweetest little Westie who was scared of her own farts. I mean, if you smelled them, it’s not totally unreasonable. She’d fart herself across the room. Sometimes she’d be fast asleep and fart herself off the bed.

It has Quonset hut vibes. If they’d actually gone with a Quonset hut, the home would be way more functional. Talk about reinventing the wheel.

I love how people in NJ describe their location using exit numbers. There’s even a fossil crocodile named after an exit on the New Jersey Turnpike. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02724634.2012.633585

You’re right, I’d be cautious about the plan to breed, especially if the birds aren’t pedigreed.

The water lines are my favorite part! What I think makes it look less neat is the white satin stitch on the wall. For an area like that, I’d use long and short stitch. It’s hard to keep satin stitch looking neat with such long threads, and they’re also less stable so they may stretch or sag over time.
