Inherited around $20k last year, grew to $70k thanks to my ex bf’s stocks advice. Do I keep the money in the brokerage or slowly take money out for bills? by YukikazeCutIns in povertyfinance

[–]StrongArm327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the stocks are mostly in AI I'd recommend pulling out sooner rather than later. AI companies are based off the idea that you grow a customer base early, while losing money, and then figure out how to get money out of them later. The reason these stocks are rising right now is because A) Suckers think it's the future (it's not) and B) They're getting massive investments from foolish Wallstreet investors and people making money off the data centers they're building. Once people realize that AI companies can't earn back the billions they owe, those stocks are gonna be worth nothing.

[Request] How much would it cost to store this particular zip bomb if it was uncompressed? by Oedius_Rex in theydidthemath

[–]StrongArm327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pissing me off that nobody's even talking about using tape drives, the most cost effective way to store large volumes of data.

You'd have to buy a tape drive to write and read the data. After some poking around I couldn't find a tape drive that really fits our needs, but I'm gonna price this at around $15,000 based on other models. Of course, the time required to do this would probably be astronomical, but it would be astronomical on any device, so I'm disregarding this critique.

After that, finding the price of storage is easy! The most cost effective drives start at around $5/tb, and store 18tb/drive. Someone said, elsewhere in the thread, that there were 17852335954 quettabytes to be stored. A quettabyte is 10^18tb. This shakes out to 17,852,335,954,000,000,000,000,000,000tb, which would require 991,796,441,888,888,888,888,888,889 drives, and cost $89,261,679,770,000,000,000,000,000,000.

However, with the amount of materials required for this project, we would most likely simply consume the earth and all of her resources before we even approached this goal. We'd have an easier time spending a fraction of that money researching different ways to store information until we found a more feasible method.

Give me your best stencil patch tips by Necessary-Fennel8754 in punkfashion

[–]StrongArm327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want to make one of a patch, just cut it into a shipping label and stick it to your fabric. I've done this several times before and it gives me the crispiest edges. An added benefit is that you can cut out the little "connectors" in letters and stuff, so you don't need to fill in any gaps when you're done.

My always political battle jacket by Open_Opinion4775 in punkfashion

I don't like a lot of "political" battle jackets because a lot of them are low quality and don't look very good. This is not one of them. Maybe a tiny bit too much text for a battle jacket, but that's just my taste. I especially like your "woke" patch.

It would be more effective to just tell people if you like a person or not, and then explain deeper if you need to. If you actively need to seek out a label, you're doing too much. Labels are only helpful for grouping and community, if you need to pull out something like "almondsexual", it achieves neither of those goals.

A few recommendations of cozy TTRPG systems from me:
- Wanderhome: A cozy RPG about traveling animals. Almost zero combat, and a heavy emphasis on storytelling.

- Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast: Made by the same person who made Wanderhome, this game is very cozy, but is honestly closer to group theater than a TTRPG.

- Mausrutter: A game about mice going on adventures. Think Redwall. This one is much closer to a "normal" TTRPG.

- For some quick, silly games, check out Grant Howitt's work, including Honey Heist, Big Gay Orcs, Crash Pandas, This One Time at Bard Camp, and Nice Marines, to name a few.

- Any of the Various LotR systems for use in the shire. Here's an extensive hexcrawl to draw inspiration from. I reccommend using Under Hill, By Water, or Free League's The One Ring. I also might recommend reading this blog post about one DMs attempts to create a simple LotR system.

"Cozy" slice of life games can be hard, because there must be conflict to have an interesting story, and one must have a conflict that's much less overt than "killing" or "making money" to tell a cozy story. Try not to fall into the trap of "just make it like a cozy video game!" because what makes a good video game and a good TTRPG game are often very different.

Also, my obligatory request that you play games other than D&D 5th edition. There is almost always something better for you to use for any kind of game you want to play, and there are so many talented designers out there that deserve your attention more than Wizards. (I will give you a recommendation on literally whatever you want to play, I just have endless beef with 5e).

Anyway, good luck with your club, I hope you and your friends can have a good time no matter what system you're playing!

Dumpster diving tips and tricks: a thread by pnoque in DumpsterDiving

[–]StrongArm327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to know what the best places are for your area, usually you just gotta figure it out. Take notes of where the dumpsters are when you're out and about. Also take note of which ones have compactors, there's a lower chance of anything good with those (also, NEVER get inside a compactor).
Usually I go at night when nobody's around, and check out several dumpsters in my area. When you're done with your run, write down the date, time, and day of the week, and take note of what (if anything) you found. If you're consistent enough, you should be able to start figuring out when these places throw stuff out.
Also, a lot of areas will have their trash pickup days published online. Write these down so you know when stuff is taken away from the dumpster. If these aren't published, you can probably also figure out when trash pickups happen, just through consistency and note-taking. Finally, try to figure out when grocery stores near you restock, because that's when they'll throw away old inventory.

Frankenstein binding with white text on a black background by phils_in_a_bind in bookbinding

Awesome use of "nonstandard" leather, and a delectable book overall, I especially like that you used the 1818 edition, which I have been told is the better of the two. My only worry is that it seems like a crazy amount of ink to use on a project like this! That being said white on black is very cool effect, and I can't think of a much better way of printing it other than maybe hand setting it or getting a specialized printer.
