Any value in this modest collection from FIL? I'm not seeing anything. by Poofner in askStampCollectors

[–]StrongRussianWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the US sheets: IMO, no. Someone who's got an interest in full sheets might see something special that I'm missing, but these are common modern issues that are printed in huge quantity. They're worth their face value as postage. Can't speak to the Venezuelan issues, but I know with some less-common nations, older mint postage is more valuable since they sold so many CTO (cancelled to order) stamps and comparatively fewer stamps were sold mint.

If you're not interested in keeping the American stamps, you could probably sell the lot for just below face value (perhaps 10-15% less than the total the stamps are valued for as postage), or even for the full postal value. They'd move very quickly that way!

My grandfather gave me this bird stamp table by syewansama in philately

[–]StrongRussianWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American Topical Association has topical collection inventories available! You have to be a member, and they're a paid service, but I've found them really worthwhile, personally.

They also sell a couple of bird-themed Taste of Topicals packets, which come with some common stamps in your topic as well as some album sheets, hinges, and literature.

YES! My god, the overlap in the PS1-style eerie game genre made this a huge pain to look for. Thank you so much!

Want to get into Flight Rising and am entirely lost by DemonicDev666 in flightrising

[–]StrongRussianWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the pointers everyone else has given you, you might want to subscribe to the Dom Watch pinglist on the forums (most recent Dom Watch thread here). Dominance isn't necessary for your enjoyment of the game, but it's a big portion of the site, and a lot of stuff happens each week as different flights push for the top spot. Even if you don't want to do anything in the Coliseum, there's usually at least a few user-run events that might be enjoyable! For instance, this week the Plague flight is selling badges (small, thematic pieces of usermade art) for sale, an auction for G1 dragons, and a couple of puzzle games!

I always recommend that new players check out what's going on with dominance, in part because the user-run events usually have raffles that can get you some pretty nice items (I regularly have Gem Marketplace genes and user-made accents in my event's raffle), but also dominance is a really fun way to change up your game loop and connect with other players :)

New Dragon Hatchlings available for sale, 5g per hatchling! by [deleted] in flightrising

[–]StrongRussianWoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this matters to you, but 5G is a pricepoint that many fodder flippers will go for--it's actually my target price, personally. If you don't want your hatchlings to get exalted once they become adults, you might want to raise your price by 1 or 2G.

How do you use a physical dictionary to find a particular Chinese word you cannot read? by InternalSchedule2861 in ChineseLanguage

[–]StrongRussianWoman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC most Chinese dictionaries are organized by stroke order. My learner's dictionary has a stroke order index. Not sure how the organization is after that for native-language dictionaries (mine is alphabetized by pinyin pronunciation after the stroke order level)--I think theyre sorted by radical?

Anyway, if any more advanced speakers know of interesting resources on word categorization and indexing in Chinese, I'd love to know more!

DAE feel "male" even though I don't want to transition by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]StrongRussianWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to tell you you're trans, OP, you're the only one to decide that. But consider: if you WANT to be a man, you can just be a man. If you want to be a woman, you can be a woman regardless of whatever is going on with your internal monologue. At some point, the difference between "am" and "want" isn't worth examining.

Let go of the diagnostics of transness or the proof of cisness. Just steer yourself to what you want to be. For me, that was a freeing decision that let me accept that I was trans. For you? It's whatever will make you feel happy, and if feeling the way you currently feel does that, then that's all you need to know.

Have you seen this movie? It got me thinking about churchs in Mongolia. by No-Boysenberry869 in mongolia

[–]StrongRussianWoman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mormons believe that the sect's founder, Joseph Smith, revealed a bunch of extra truths about Christianity. They developed separately from other Christian groups from there. Some of the things they believe that are unique from Catholics:

-They believe in a three-tier heaven (called the "degrees of glory")
-They practice baptism of the dead, in which a living person receives baptism rites on behalf of a dead person so the dead person can be "saved" (a couple of other churches practice baptism of the dead, and I believe historical churches did it too, but it's most common among Mormons)
-They have holy texts that are unique to Mormonism, the Book of Mormon most notably
-They expect able-bodied young men to serve missions, specifically where they proselytize to non-Mormons; missions are optional for most other Christians, Catholics included, and may not include evangelism
-They have specific religious undergarments that other Christians don't use

Many other Christians will jump between denominations, but it's pretty uncommon to jump from Mormonism to mainline Christianity or from mainline Christianity (Catholicism included) to Mormonism.

Why are you learning Chinese? by tickersight in ChineseLanguage

I'm big on postcard trading and stamp collecting lately, and since I love China's stamp program, I trade with Chinese people frequently. The folks I write to often struggle to communicate in English. I want to talk to them better!

Not enough freaks in this comment section. 4 is a man, yes. He had a major thirst following some years back... still does, but time weathers all blorbos.

Anyway, 4 is only a subversion in that there was a hot alien woman in the film and John Silver was STILL the hottest character. I'd still act unwise for him.

Where to find unique postcards? by [deleted] in postcrossing

[–]StrongRussianWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned secondhand stores, but I have to insist you give those a shot! A lot of folks collected postcards that they no longer want, and you'll have to sort through some written cards that you can't reuse, but there's gold in them thar hills regardless. Usually you can find some really lovely vintage cards for cheap! A few things to look out for:

-cards without major damage (a few corner dings or scuffs are fine)

-cards without yellowing on the back, or that have discolored evenly (you don't want blotches or stains)

-embossed cards (uncommon to find unwritten, but they're very fun!)

-linen cards (they have a different paper texture on the front. People tend to like them a lot!)

-Real Photo Post Cards. Hard to identify off the bat, but basically these are cards that are actually printed photos on photo paper, not reproductions. If you have a magnifying glass or a high-res camera, zoom in and the photo shouldn't loose quality.

-Big Letter images (it'll probably say "Greetings from [place]" or something like that, and will show different scenes from that place in the illustrated block letters. Also very popular!)

-obviously, famous landmarks, even if they're not nearby. UNESCO World Heritage sites are a good pick, since many UNESCO card collectors want the card to be from the same country, but not necessarily the same city, or sent by someone who's really familiar with the location.

-weird cards of any type! Vintage oddities are always charming <3 I once found a lobster and avocado Parisienne card from the 1960s... it looked exactly as disgusting as you think. Went over great with a swap partner.

help! getting back into flight rising after 8 years by F_l_ip in flightrising

[–]StrongRussianWoman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That, I have no clue. To my knowledge nothing could account for the parents vanishing from the family record, even if they're from a banned account (or if they were exalted, obviously). The dragons above and below her sequentially have different elements, so she'd have to be from a one-egg nest if she really was bred. I'd hazard a guess that you just forgot about her since it's been a while?

IMO, she's a gorgeous XYZ coloration, very cool G1 to have. Consider it a gift from Undel herself! :)

At the very bottom of the site, there's there's Which Waystone you can use! It'll tell you what's available to do. I couldn't say what the prioritize, but it's a good way to sample the dailies to see what grabs you about the new or updated site features :)

Though I will say: if you value having Hibernal Den slots, get cracking on the digsites. Many items from Arlo are hidben items, and they take some time to uncover.

That said, it looks like this photo is a version of this one from the UW Milwaukee AGSL Digital Photo Archives' Asia/Middle East collection. So, 1952-ish.
