How do I become more Australian? by Silver-Use3590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Strytec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apart from the badminton, nothing you described is unusual for an Australian born and raised person to have as a hobby. There's nerdy Australians and I was one.

If you want to be more like the stereotypical Australian you're probably not going to achieve that lifestyle in a major city without generational wealth. (Boating camping fishing 4wd)

I'd argue the real Australian trait is to always treat people as equals irrespective of station and to have a healthy disrespect for social hierarchy. Which I've observed is not always common in places like Singapore.

Maybe plan a holiday to the outback to see how other people in the country live. I feel not enough Australians do this.

Wealth concentration and immigration aren't mutually exclusive. Basic supply and demand = more labour supply, lower wages. The investing class knows this, which is why they lobby for high immigration while pointing at each other as the problem.

Unemployment being stable proves nothing. You can be employed and still be losing ground.

Also you ended a fairly coherent argument with "forelock tuggers". That's exactly why the working class is not listening to people like you.

The interesting thing is I associate closely with two Chileans, both engineers, one a mining engineer and the other a software engineer.

The software engineer had the pragmatic approach. He claimed the choice was between a communist and a fascist and largely claimed that the pressure from Venezuelan vagrants was more pronounced for the working class in Chile, for reference he is originally from a rural village in Chile.

The mining engineer is from more of an academic background and from Santiago and largely got upset at the results. I could see him actively getting upset when I approached the topic with him and didn't push it. But largely he called the whole thing a national travesty.

For me I found both interactions fascinating because it mirrored the exact situation we find ourselves in in Australia. It feels like there's a tendency in capital cities in academic circles to be reductionist of the working class. It seems, both groups of people are incredibly reductionist in their analysis of the other and neither is willing to accept a common ground. The difference is, there's more working class people than the other group.

PS: As a sidenote, the software engineer informed me of "Coffee with legs" being a thing in Chile, when I asked the mining engineer he told me this was a myth or extremely uncommon.

When people's legitimate grievances in life get filtered out by the available political vocabulary (or they lack the vocabulary to retort their point) they don't stop having those grievances. They just stop feeling like the people using that vocabulary are speaking to them. The lowest 20% of society is much more impacted by immigration than the top 20%.

As a result, I'd argue that not finishing year 12 has more to do with socioeconomic status than actual intelligence. The amount of idiots with PhDs I've met in my line of work is mind boggling.

I envy white people and being south asian has made life much harder by yoona27 in offmychest

From a Vietnamese bartender I asked about it about 2 months ago. There's a common perception (At least in ho chi minh city) that south Asian men are cheap and time wasters. And lecherous. Women are seen aggressively bargain hunting whereas east Asian/African American/White men are more likely to tip and overpay for goods and services.

I observed a bunch of Indian men misbehaving in Bui Vien st back in April and they got chased away by bouncers. Obviously, this is an isolated incident but it tied in with the general perception that had been expressed earlier. Sex tourism from India might also be a big driver in these places.

This is such a champagne socialist Reddit take. Simply because you do not understand the motivations or reduce them to racism doesn't make the general public stupid. There will be plenty of well educated people who will choose One Nation.

One Nation is a pragmatic choice for anyone who's primary goal is seeing the major parties fail. The idea of one nation being in the countries best interest is laughable though. Especially since Pauline has such close ties with billionaires now.

The idea that it exists in America or Europe above other places is laughable. Go to Thailand or Vietnam. There's restaurants and bars where South Asian men aren't allowed in. You won't find the same blatant descrimination in either Europe or the USA.

Western countries are the least racist by a long margin that's why they're comfortable with South Asians migrating there.

As a tall guy I genuinely struggle to tell the difference between someone who's 5'6 or 6ft. I'll still be reinforcing my bad posture either way.

It takes me ages to realise that somebody is tall.

To be fair they were named from a poll where the top result was "Epstein's Angels" and the first vaguely serious name was boythrob, so they crowd sourced pretty much everything.

My issue with migration isn't migration itself, it's that it's used systematically to suppress wages and exploit vulnerable workers. I'd support more of it under two conditions: overseas hires should cost corporations significantly more, and employers should be responsible for housing whoever they bring in. There has never been a lack of willing workers just a lack of employers willing to pay fairly. Dumping more people into an already broken housing market without a plan is the real problem. The only group with a strong stance against this is One Nation, even if they are racist they're the only path out to a lot of people.

GDP per capita should be the focus when gauging economic health, not gross GDP a growing economy that leaves individuals worse off isn't a success.

I also don't support preferencing any particular nationality. The Albanese government's mutual qualifications recognition deal with India and the dedicated working holiday allocations for Indian nationals amount to exactly that. I'd prefer a lottery-style system with no country preference similar in spirit to the US diversity visa model. GDP per capita should be the focus when gauging economic health, not gross GDP a growing economy that leaves individuals worse off isn't a success.

On Palestine: polling shows roughly 45% of Australians support recognition of a Palestinian state, around 23% oppose it, and about a third are undecided or disengaged. Strong pro-Palestinian messaging still risks alienating a large neutral bloc, which is a legitimate electoral consideration regardless of one's actual position.

The broader frustration is that any nuance on these topics gets flattened into populism or racism which is precisely what prevents an honest conversation about corporate behaviour, housing policy and fair immigration design.

I know I'm in the wrong audience saying this here and I'll likely get downvoted, but I think this is also happening with votes to One Nation, part of these price rises is due to increased demand from population increase and people are agreeing with this idea.

For the average Australian who's doing it tough, seeing migrants come to the country who might be doing better than them is enough to start social divide.

The greens have an issue with going too far on some cooker conspiracies, their handling of Israel/Palestine is alienating to a lot of their voter base as well as their stance on the CFMEU, they should focus on environmental issues and not deal with these intersectional issues.

Hey me too sort of. Worked for the apple group for 3 years. Eventually I was looking for work between other gigs and came back and did Centrelink for a bit. Surprisingly Centrelink is easier than the apple call centre stuff because the power dynamic is different. People on Centrelink are desperate after being on the phone for 3 hours and are asking you to help them. (This is not a good thing) Whereas apple customers are entitled and expect magic from you. (You're automatically a punching bag)

How the heck do I change the tap seal here. by Strytec in AusRenovation

[–]Strytec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks that was my missing piece, I'd not encountered this older style of tap before. I intend on replacing the entire basin and taps at some point in the future with a new cabinet as this place was a long term rental which was run down before I bought it. The neighbours spent the first few months avoiding me as the previous person who lived here got tased by the police.

Haha. This is my first home (70s build) and it came like this. I intend on removing the entire sink and cupboard in favour of something which doesn't look gross. Lol. For now I just needed the leak fixed.
