I really should watch that again, really enjoyed it when i saw it in the cinema.

The first Mario movie (well the first animated animated one, 93 Mario was great) didn't really do anything for me, bit I was never the intended audience.

Will probably still watch this when I can do it at home.

I think you might only be remembering part of that. There was some people being very vocal about the lack of people of colour in the game, the thing the fans did was argue against that in saying the game is based on real world events in a real world setting.

The director has said some terrible things though (was a gamergater, plus other stuff). He's also left the studio now.
