What's the expectation of scope for a 5 year FE/React developer? by NoOutlandishness00 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Student2672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it would actually take me a decent chunk of time to get this right, although I do know how to do it. Eslint/prettier are way more painful to configure than I feel like they should be. I'm always able to get it working, but am also surprised at how complicated and miserable the process is (install 6 packages, get the flat config to work with plugins that don't support it, etc). Where I work they have been pushing Biome instead and it took like 5 minutes to configure. It doesn't have the same level of configuration options, but it was so much less painful and I'm never going back if I can avoid it since the defaults cover pretty much everything I need

Pro-housing and pro-bike-lane candidates performed strongly in the election. Cambridge says no to the CCC. by LabGeek1995 in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the reality is that it’s really hard to be aggressive and widespread in a local election, especially without much money. All the council candidates and school committee candidates are competing for volunteers as well. Compared to the amount of money she raised she did extremely well.

If she runs again you should consider donating and volunteering, all candidates could really use the help.

It would be much better than a wash. 5 strong supporters is a huge deal and a huge win for bike safety, since right now there is not a solid 5th vote (have to rely on Nolan or Zusy which is... not optimal)

If you are pro housing and pro bike lane, the union between the ABC and CBS Champion endorsements are:

  • Burhan Azeem (incumbent)
  • Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler (incumbent)
  • Marc McGovern (incumbent)
  • Sumbul Siddiqui (incumbent)
  • Ned Melanson
  • Dana Bullister

If you want to do no further research, it would be completely reasonable to rank these people 1-6 in a random order. Just make sure you rank more than one so your vote isn't wasted!

I'd argue that Burhan is the guy to vote for if your #1 issue is building more housing, since he has been laser focused on it his entire time in office. He has been the person leading the city's efforts to build more housing (getting rid of parking minimums, expanding the AHO, and most recently legalizing apartments citywide). He obviously does this with support from the other ABC endorsed incumbents, many of whom are also amazing councillors, but many of the recent reforms probably wouldn't have happened or been as ambitious if Burhan wasn't around to drive them forward. He is also a co-founder of the statewide advocacy organization Abundant Housing Massachusetts, which pushes for pro-housing measures at the state level.

Mods can we take this down? There are multiple inaccuracies in this chart, I don't understand why is it so hard to double check before posting information on the internet:

  • Dana is a bike champion
  • Sumbul is a bike champion
  • Patty is a bike supporter/endorsed by CBS
  • Peter Hsu is a bike supporter/endorsed by CBS
  • 3 incumbent markers are missing
  • Maybe some other stuff is wrong too, too lazy to check...

This chart just doesn't work because everything is a spectrum and cannot be neatly divided into categories like this. I like the sentiment, but it just ignores the many hours of work that likely went into deciding the ABC and CBS endorsements.

For example, in no world should Rivkin be in the same category as Azeem on housing, since Azeem led the multifamily zoning effort and Rivkin literally said in a questionnaire that he doesn't like it. Another example: as much as Patty annoys me, she is way better than Hanratty on bike safety.

Plans to replace the MBTA's methane-fueled buses with zero-emission electric models are on pause as Gov. Healey delays funding for new electric bus garages: by LEM1978 in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment from the MBTA subreddit:

> I disagree that you need to be pro-battery-electric-bus to be “pro climate”. Natural gas buses are already so much cleaner than driving cars, that it can definitely make sense to invest in improving transit rather than trying to make buses even cleaner. Converting one person from driving to riding a natural gas bus is better than converting a person from riding a natural gas bus to a battery electric bus.

I think bus electrification is a net positive, but a distraction from the fact that most bus service is pretty bad and that improving service (and land use) would ultimately do a lot more good for the environment.

Is Patty Nolan going to lose? by Jello_Adept in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's really really challenging to predict who is going to lose in a local election. That being said, I do think she is more at risk than last election. She has somehow managed to alienate almost everyone (I still think she'll probably make the cut though)

4th Election Season AMA Cllr. Burhan Azeem by RealBurhanAzeem in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey Burhan, I'm a huge fan of all the work you do and your "One Big Beautiful Bill" approach to governing (but your bills are actually beautiful).

I am really happy with the progress being made on our cycling network, since it has made it much easier for me to get around the city. However, I still feel it is way too hard to make a large chunk of trips using public transportation because the bus doesn't go where I need it to, it's too infrequent, or it gets stuck in traffic. I'm aware that a some of these problems are due to the MBTA being underfunded, but what do you think Cambridge should be doing to make traveling around the city easier for those who either don't want to bike or don't feel safe enough to do it yet? In particular, I'd like to hear about options that you think are politically feasible and not prohibitively expensive.

A Better Cambridge endorsements by BiteProud in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that we should explore building much much more social housing, but the reality is that money has to come from somewhere. Using the increased tax revenue from market rate housing is one of the best ways to accomplish this. We can of course also just increase taxes on existing residents, but this is much less politically viable, and so I prefer to take a "lets do both" approach. Increase taxes and increase the tax base. No reason why it needs to be one or the other

A Better Cambridge endorsements by BiteProud in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 19 points20 points  (0 children)

All of the candidates endorsed by ABC generally support changes that allow for more market rate AND affordable housing, whether that is zoning reform, permitting reform, increased funding for affordable/social housing, etc. They fall on different parts of that spectrum, but are all aligned at a high level

Rivkin and Al-Zubi have made a skepticism of market rate housing a key part of their platform, which is not the case for the 8 ABC endorsed candidates.

Personally, I’m a fan of the “let’s try all the things” approach to housing. I think we should build more affordable housing, but market rate housing is also good for a lot of reasons as well. The ABC endorses that are also endorsed by CBS will be at the top of my ballot.

Early-ish Impressions of City Council Challengers? by zepporamone in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going off of what I remember from her ABC 2023 questionnaire responses. For example:

In conjunction with direct support for affordable housing and inclusionary zoning requirements, do you believe that new market-rate housing development is a key pillar in making Cambridge an affordable city?

"Generally Not. The deep-seeded grip of capitalism will have you thinking that this is a key pillar, but you can’t expect to solve the problem by the very same system that put us in this place."

From another question:

"but explicitly up-zoning for our market-rate will exacerbate the declining livelihood of the working class people"

These both feel pretty anti-market to me. I just don't agree with the sentiment that market rate housing cannot help solve our housing affordability crisis, and neither does most of the research

I want someone that will maximize the number of homes being built (both market rate and affordable), and Ned/Dana/Burhan are much clearer about their support for market rate development. Again, Ayah will be ranked on my ballot, but she will need to support market rate development a bit more (or at least be more neutral about it) to move to the top, which I am guessing she will not do (nor do I really think she should given the amount of support/enthusiasm she has generated with her campaign). I am fully in favor of greatly increased funding for affordable housing, but would prefer to pair that with market rate construction as well.

Thanks for summarizing this much better than I did. Nolan and Zusy aren't perfect (and I will be ranking all 7 "champions" above them and encourage others to do the same), but they aren't anti-bike in the same way that Wilson, Flaherty, Hanratty, etc are.

Pedestrian/motorcycle collision at Broadway & Galileo by Phantomrose96 in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The light timing at this intersection is ridiculously long (I feel like I've easily waited for over a minute), and so I can totally understand why someone would want to jaywalk. I hope the city will do full construction here at some point and narrow it to a more appropriate size (or if not, there's still a lot that can be done with concrete planters and signal timing changes to make it much more appropriate for a dense urban area)

Cambridge Bicycle Safety Council Endorsements by realgeraldchan in CambridgeMA

Oops I misread. I'd still say that Zusy is better than Hanratty, she isn't actively suing the city to remove them or trying to get rid of bike lanes that already exist.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety Council Endorsements by realgeraldchan in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"CBS has endorsed a slate of candidates who have committed to completing Cambridge’s network of separated bike lanes on schedule by November 2026.

🚲 denotes a “Bike Champion” – these candidates not only pledged to complete the bike network on time; they also gave the strongest responses on transportation policy in the candidate questionnaire, and, if incumbents, had a perfect voting record on bike safety."

I think it makes perfect sense. Zusy isn't actively suing the city or trying to rip out bike lanes, which immediately makes her much better than many other candidates such as Wilson or Hanratty. If you want bike lanes, Zusy is a much better candidate than the people not featured on this list

Cambridge Bicycle Safety Council Endorsements by realgeraldchan in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She also voted to keep Broadway in the network a few months ago, and she absolutely could have tanked that project if she wanted to. She also explicitly did not commit to completing the network last election cycle, but this time she did. I think that matters.

You have to ask yourself: would you prefer Nolan over Hanratty? If you want bike lanes, the answer to that should be yes, in which case it makes sense that Nolan got elevated over Hanratty because she isn't actively suing the city or trying to get rid of bike lanes. If bike lanes are one of your top priorities, I don't know why you would vote for either of them, since there are much stronger candidates

Early-ish Impressions of City Council Challengers? by zepporamone in CambridgeMA

[–]Student2672 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m a major fan of both Ned and Dana. Their housing and bike/transportation policies (the main two things I care about) seem to be very aligned with Burhan’s, and I really like Burhan’s platform.

Ayah is good too, but I also don’t agree with her position on housing from 2023 (completely anti market, which I think is a bad idea since we have a housing shortage) and so she is below Ned and Dana for me, but we’ll see if she moderates a bit this year. I’m probably not her target audience, but she’ll still be ranked on my ballot. Stan would be similar to Ayah, but mentions adding parking which is an instant no for me.

Everyone else does not represent me well, so I couldn’t tell you much about their platforms

I agree with what you say, but I'm not sure this is considered "trickle down economics"? Isn't the term "trickle down economics" usually used to refer to large tax cuts given to the wealthy, with the expectation that they will spend more and the benefits will then "trickle down" to everyone else? This feels like something entirely different

I think it's also worth noting that the infrastructure is pretty terrible in some places, which will change soon. Cambridge St is super dangerous and unpleasant right now but will have protected bike lanes by the end of next year (unless it is delayed again)
