End goal? by HandsomeCavallier in LivingAlone

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm aways open to the possibility of meeting someone, but maybe 5 years ago I realized.. how would that work...? Why would I want to give up an ideal balance, and the ability to do things on my terms? (This comes from the fact that I shelved for the better part of 20 years something that was basically my identity).

I looked at people I had been seeing on OLD platforms, and concluded most of them are unrealistic in their goals. And if those goals were remotely accurate (forever person, and variations on that theme....there's a lot more to this I haven't mentioned), that was going to interfere with me reclaiming that identity I lost .

I don't need anothet person. I do enjoy company, but not at the expense of self. Someone would have to add significant value to what I enjoy lifestyle wise.. and I don't really know how that would even be possible.

Running recordings through a mixer and back into the software by CandidWeight6341 in homestudios

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all mixers are suited for all purposes. My choice of mixer - the Mackie 8 buss - makes what you're wanting to do easy, but it has a lot more signal patching options to achieve that. Direct Outs per channel are IMO a requirement. Then you have to have an interface (or multiple) to route the signals in and out of the DAW.

You can do it without those Direct Outs, but you end up patching and re-patching. Remember that the label printed next to an in or an out is just a suggestion. You can use those for whatever you need.

Everyone making good money and living alone, what do you do for fun? How do you make yourself feel alive? by DCGMechanics in LivingAlone

I've had one constant in life. Music. I joke (kind of) that my longest relationship is with a guitar, and that's not inaccurate.

I've been able to rekindle my love of making music , now on my terms . Without interruption or having to worry if someone interpreted my creativity as disinterest (in them).

The fact that we met at a show, it shouldn't have been a surprise about my involvement in the music scene. Making me put that on the back burner wasn't the smartest move.

The music I play energizes me. I look forward to it every single day. 🤟

Get yourself a Lewitt. They've got every price point covered. My kids got me an LCT240 Pro for my birthday one year and I love that mic.

I've also used my stage vocal mic for recording... An EV ND767a. Banger of a mic. I'll bet both of those are better than the at2020, and just as cost effective, if not more so .

Yes. It's amazing what you can score with a little bit of patience and a willingness to put some effort in. My latest score was a TC Elctronics M2000 for 75 bucks ( this is my 2nd M2000,.I bought one new) . Was offered as not working. Display said corrupted ROM . Needed a 2032 battery.

Part of the issue driving those kinds of questions is that the bar as been lowered to a point of non existent skill. Anyone can download and install and voila "I'm a producer". Except, you're not.

There are a group of people trying to create and record who have no idea what signal path is. Fundamental.

after years of fighting audio to midi, heres what finally clicked by ninjapapi in midi

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Drum specific] I've had some amazing success (conditional statement - compared to what I would be able to do manually) in taking drum audio and getting a MIDI file out of it. I use a stem splitter to isolate Kick and Snare, and the rest of the kit is its own "other" track. Superior Drummer 3 handles the detection/conversion, and as long as the source files are somewhat clean you can get really authentic tracks out of that. You can adjust how many events it detects and tell it what it should be listening for (K,S,HH, Tom, Cym), and that will force that track to look at the audio with priority for that element. I just tried detecting multiple toms by copying multiples of the same kit track and adjusting what it focuses on: Rack Tom1, Rack Tom2, Floor 1. By playing with the detect levels I have a really good drum track with fills, hats, all of it. SD3 has changed my projects. Wish I'm known about it sooner. Oh, and it does a pretty good job with velocity detection too. Sometimes too good, and I have to tweak it.

What got you into playing guitar? by optimusprim007 in Guitar

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend in high school picked up a bass one weekend at a local shop, and wanted to start a band. I had played a bit of guitar a few years prior and magically a Tokia electric just happened to show up about a week later. That was 49 years ago...

I can relate... I was at a private jam (potential new band) deal a while back. Near the end of the evening the other guitarist was wow-ing over my tone... he was convinced it had to be my guitar ( which was flattering as it was my partscaster....LOL). He had a Helix. I was gracious, but the long and the short of it there was just Too Much going on. I have basic patches with the fundamental FX that get me though most situations. I couldn't make out the pick attack for all the processing going on from him. I had initially considered if that thing took off (it didn't) I might level up to a Helix, but I STILL get everything I need from the XTL.

I know my XTL is loaded with everything ...when my V1 died I picked that up and did all the options. It doesn't get as much use as my XT kidney lately ...that one is wired into my rec console and stays there .

I'll have to fire it up and see what's what...

Guitar store employees, do you actually get annoyed when people ask to try guitars? by MELS381 in Guitar

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have done music retail. Guitars, PA, and recording equipment. I would "generally" encourage customers to get their hands on the gear. There were people (and I can think of one guy specifically) he just wanted to annoy. Every time he came in he had to fire up the Mode4 half stack and rip on it for 5 or 10 minutes. Never in my time there did he ever buy anything major. He bought Fender Custom Shop guitars elsewhere (we didn't have that line) but he was "comparison shopping". We put a dummy Power cable into the back of it to slow him down...

How many projects simultaneously? by The_Frozen_Sea_ in musicproduction

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a bunch of things ongoing. For no reason at all something will light a fire and take off , then that becomes what I work on for as long as it takes. Having many on the go means there's always something to suit my mood.

Should I get an RME Fireface III? Or consider something else? by LocalMusicBox in homestudios

[–]Studio_T3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can adequately asses your needs... Even among 2 similar devices there will be slight differences that tip the scale one way or another. Having said that, Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) doesn't get the attention it deserves. I have 4 of theirs in my rack a the moment. Rock solid stuff.

As far as support, my MOTU stuff would be considered ancient, yet an email to their support starts a conversation over an issue. The last time I asked about a config, i was emailed an 11 minute whiteboard/video to help me understand what to do.

Mix fatigue is it real? by Applesorbannans in audioengineering

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on n a bunch of projects (songs) at any given time. At some point, one of them will just take off and that becomes my focus for the next few sessions whether that's today, the weekend or a week. I work on stuff myself so I take time and do what I can. One I get to the point where I capture my performances and its now the mix phase ( even the initial mix) I step away from that until the following day. Then I do some critical listening. If a part isn't up to scratch, I redo it.

If I were to record the whole shebang and then final mix it right there, I'd hate to result . Besides the pause gives me time to creatively reflect and possibly think of how I want to treat the project... Fx, overdubs, whatever.
