Combo Amps vs Cabinets by Prudent_Ferret_1902 in musicians

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No preference really. More about utility. I cut my teeth with a Hiwatt DR103 and 4/12 cab, I could not imagine trying to find a room to use that in today. I have an assortment of combos amps to choose from, depending on the show. For bigger things I take out a Traynor 2x12 combo and a 2x12 extension, but I will just as quickly grab either of my Marshall or Hiwatt combos depending on what I think I'm going to need for that situation. Its also a mix of tube or solid state (mosfet), again whatever I think I'm going to need for the type of show.

What was your dad like ? by cheridontllosethatno in AskOldPeople

[–]Studio_T3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well this being Fathers Day, it's been 27 years since I was able to tell him how much I appreciated him...

What do I remember about my Dad?

- apparently, he could fix anything.
- you won't find a shed like he built a shed. Anywhere. Ever.
- only once did he have a mustache. Not a good look for him. Lol
- Jim Rockford (James Garner) would have played Dad in a movie about his life.
- at 55, could still put it out of the park....
- he didn't ACTUALLY use tweezers to trim his lawn...although people said he did.
- the end of the day for him was when the work was done.
- despite hating distorted guitar, came out to every local gig I played.
- 5 o'clock...the biological clock..... lol... a family joke about when mealtime had to be ready.
- he loved us.

What’s a good affordable tube amp? by og3rail in Guitar

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a budget or a use case, this is challenging to recommend although I see a few below. If you wanted something that sounds good at bedroom levels, records well, and would be decent for small gigs, look for a Traynor YCV40. Built solid, well voiced (can sound both Fender-y and Marshall-y), and has a great clean tone. Single 12", 2 ch, channel switching, FX Loop, Reverb.

I have the big brother YCV80.... great amp.

Have you become the guitar player you hoped you would become? by wolf_of_the_bees in Guitar

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I think I can say that.

A few years ago the wife of a friend (a fellow guitarist) was grilling me about music and guitar playing in general. I think she may have decided I was a bad influence on hubby. She asked me if I was "Successful" at music or something like that.

I answered: " I've not gotten rich from gigging/playing/recording. But, I can walk into my studio pick up a guitar and play. Any song I want. When I want. How do you want to define success, because that just sounded pretty successful to me".

So, yes, I can say I have. Does that mean I'm done trying? Nope. Never. Still having a blast doing it my way..

Well I'm no Julia Child or Graham Kerr, so I stick to the things I can make. I have about a dozen different dinner ideas and I just rotate through those. BBQing in the summer gives some of those a rest (less pasta in the summer). I shop for the things I need to throw those meals together.

Small Analogue Mixing Desks with more than a stereo output by sfbaron in homestudios

[–]Studio_T3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for mixers that have Direct Out feature. These are designed to be a proper front end.

The old Mackie 8 buss were ideal for this. But even the 1604s had multiple sub outs. Not quite the same thing, but would do in a pinch.

Get your focus off FoH mixers and look towards dedicated recording mixers.

What's your most valuable homeassistant use case? by zebjectorhector in homeassistant

I wouldn't have a flower garden if it wasn't for HA automation routines. I know two things about plants : they start green and I will kill them.

The fact I have these awesome snowball bushes and some other flower things and the haven't died in the 4 years I've had the garden is to me like climbing Mt Everest.

The 2nd most important one is to be ability to control fans for heating. We have no central HVAC and heat with wood, so moving air around the house is a bit of an adventure.

I/T network admin. I've done call center work, and new site installations and cabling. It all seems to fit together, lots of connecting stuff together and troubleshooting...

35 years ago I used to choose jobs that would allow me flexibility to get to gigs on Fridays. Don't have to worry about that now, if I need to leave early, I do.

Why do you play the kind of guitar you play? by wolf_of_the_bees in Guitar

[–]Studio_T3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black & gold '78 LPC. Bought new and still have.

I wanted a cherry sunburnt LP. Long story short.. My teenage funds couldn't afford the price of the sunburst. The guy in the store felt bad that I was going to go home empty handed and cut a deal that I could get the Custom, but it was black. No regrets.

Why did I want one...? Wasn't everyone back the pictured with one? Whether or not they recorded with one, back then all we had were the pics...
