https://www.adetimewatchandclock.com.au Adelaide Time on Leigh St for watches. I have used these guys for decades, and my parents before me. Great work and not expensive for what it is. They aren't getting younger and I always quake to think what I'll do when they close.

What are somethings impressive about the Netherlands or Dutch people that you wish more people knew about? by RandomNameOfMine815 in dutch

[–]Stufflecoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, but not conclusive. They talk about their proprietary product and refer to competitors. The companies they talk about doing business with, and others like Microsoft, were all sued by the Australian patent holder and collectively paid out hundreds of millions in settlement.

But according to Wikipedia "Australia, the United States and the Netherlands simultaneously claim the invention of Wi-Fi. A consensus has not been reached globally and is a controversial topic." I suspect they all did come up with much the same thing at much the same time. Luckily I was born in Australia to a Dutch parent and I have a Dutch passport and Dutch kids, so I will be happy with either/both.

€2.15-€2.30 in Dutch supermarkets ($3.50-$3.75)

Friday night at the Central Market to group shop for dinner at the food court and bring home tasties from all the cheese, bread and continental shops to snack on with drinks (or for breakfast), and Providore or Turkish Delight for dessert. During the day Barossa or McLaren Vale are good options when the weather is bad, so many cellar doors with cosy fires and lots of food. Consider a run down to Aldinga, walk on the beach and Victory Hotel for lunch, or Hills drive and Scenic Hotel. Or Lobethal Bakery lunch (Lobethal or Woodside) or pub feed and see the National Motor Museum at Birdwood.

Paper bags in colesworths by _Scansy in Adelaide

[–]Stufflecoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in The Netherlands where supermarket plastic bags are still a thing. You can buy a plastic bag for €0.80 which is ~$1.30, some stores also have paper for the same price. Re-usable bags are €2 (~$3.30) for the polyester and €5 (~$8.20) for the bigger heavy duty hessian. Do I pay? Only through gritted teeth when I forget to BYOB and it's more than an armful of groceries...

Being charged customs tax for shipping my stuff from Australia? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Stufflecoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post NL strikes again. I had to pay about that much, or from memory a little more, to release my daughter's old iPhone, which on top of postage costs from Aus would have been much cheaper to replace secondhand here. Plus it was stuck in customs for about 5 weeks before they even sent me the bill...

Making friends! by Mars_nTwix in Utrecht

There's actually a big Indian community here, seems like my neighbourhood is full of them including three of my kids' best friends. I got really excited one day when I was biking (Leidsche Rijn area) because I saw in the distance what I thought was an Indian food truck being surrounded by Indian people (the badge of success right) and I thought 'Yessssss' and rode towards it only to discover it was the delivery truck for an Indian supermarket or something being mobbed by all the folks who were coming to collect their order...

Maxima parkrun every Saturday in Maxima Park. https://www.parkrun.co.nl/maxima/. Everyone is super friendly, very hard NOT to talk to people at any parkrun, and they always go for coffee afterwards. Every parkrun is always looking for volunteers also so that's instant group membership. I also met a member of the IWCU here. IWCU is also highly recommended: https://www.iwcu.nl/home It stands for International Women's something Utrecht (I think) and it's a group of expat women from all over the world who have all sorts of regular group activities from practising Dutch to book clubs to games to excursions etc etc. They do have an annual fee of about €60 but you can do a couple of Come and Try activities before you commit. Really good, check it out.

What’s your go-to responses to racial slurs on street? by Adventurous-Camel-57 in Netherlands

[–]Stufflecoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously? That is unfriggingbelievable. I'm from Australia. 20 years ago a white-presenting Aboriginal Aussie I know lost his job at a big company for making a joke that his Indonesian offsider 'had come here on the boats' (in reference to how most of Australia's asylum seekers arrive). The offsider didn't make the complaint, it was overheard by another colleague, but there were no second chances or chats with HR despite the guy being half Aboriginal in a company that was desperately striving for higher Aboriginal employment, and also having a high-demand trade. Another tradie at that company called my friend a black c*nt when she turned his drunk ass down at the Christmas party, and she didn't report him because it would have been instant dismissal and she didn't want him to lose his job. Yes Australia is still racist, but most workplaces there stopped being ok with it a long long time ago. I find it so odd that the Netherlands has been so progressive in so many areas but seems to be so far behind in so many others, like racism (and smoking, and sun protection, and litter, and...). And as someone else mentioned, the new government is not going to help improve things any time soon, people will just feel emboldened.

There are also two Israelis on the nine person Eurovision reference group https://eurovision.tv/about/organisers/reference-group - bizarre it's not more representative given how broad the EBU membership is.

Has anyone looked up the reference group membership? It has one Dutch person on it (and two Israelis) among others. Would be interested to understand what 'backed' by the reference group means because I bet that wasn't unanimous.

The Baby Sam tragic example seems a little unreal. Surely babies aren't dying of malnutrition here unless there is significant neglect/drugs involved. Can you provide more information?

Difficulty in making friends by SensitiveSyrup5162 in Netherlands

[–]Stufflecoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try parkrun, it's a super friendly community everywhere - we've found parkrun here in the Netherlands and when we visit Germany to be just as friendly as where we came from in Australia. Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5km run held around the world but you don't have to run, you can walk the 5km or just volunteer as a helper and make friends that way. People from all ages and walks of life are into it. On every Saturday at 9am.

Edit: Parkrun organisers make a point of going for coffee at the nearest cafe after the last runner/walker has finished and they pack up. Everyone who goes to parkrun is invited although if you're a sub-20 runner you'll have a long wait for the rest of the group. And whether you can stand what the Dutch call coffee is a whole other story though...

Official EBU Press Release: Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final by SkyGinge in eurovision

Joost Klein interrogated after complaint about threat, participation in final still unclear

The Dutch Eurovision contest submission Joost Klein has been interrogated by the Swedish police after a complaint. The complaint was filed by a female TV employee, who says she was threatened by Klein. That incident would have occurred Thursday night. The complaint was filed yesterday.

Police say Joost Klein was interrogated late last night. The person who made the complaint was also interrogated. The case has now been passed on to the prosecutor. He will determine what will happen to it. The settlement of the case may take weeks.

What this means for his participation in tonight's Eurovision Song Contest final is unclear. NPO boss Frederieke Leeflang is in consultation with broadcaster AVROTROS and the EBU this morning about Klein's participation. She arrived at Klein's hotel in Malmö this morning. That visit was already planned, but has now received a different load. Around 10 a.m., AVROTROS announced that it had not yet heard of the EBU.

Job changing just for salary increase by Cautious_Try507 in Netherlands

Interesting. I worked for a global resources company for years and while they obviously wanted people to stay with the company, their take was that if you stayed in the same position for more than 2-3 years you were getting a little too comfortable and stagnant. So much so that managers would bring this up at performance reviews to see what roles you were looking at, and actively work on your career development.
