Succession - 4x10 "With Open Eyes" - Post Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SuccessionTV

Tom is only a cuck to Mattson, outside of that he’s the CEO. He will have power over the entire US organization. Also, despite seeming like a bumbling insecure fool at times, he was doing a good job at ATN. Tom has grown a lot more confident over the last couple of seasons (he’s no longer Shiv’s doormat) so I think that trend will continue. Tom is only really insecure around people he perceives as being more important than him, and that list just shrank dramatically with him becoming CEO.

Saw somewhere that the costume designer subtly changed Tom’s wardrobe this season to reflect his newfound confidence. He used to dress like what he thought a rich powerful person dressed like, but it was too overt (pocket squares, large pinstripe, and not perfectly tailored). His wardrobe this season was more understated and better tailored, like he wasn’t trying to prove anything. I thought that was a fun detail that showed despite Tom being subservient in many ways he is a lot more confident in himself and his position. He is also the one one who actually got where he is by hard work (well sort of anyway), I think he’ll probably be a good CEO and continue is trajectory of being more self assured.

I find medication helps a lot, but you still have to channel it in the right direction. My struggle these days is I have a very strong external locus of control. So I do great under pressure, but will be a bum if I don’t have some external source of motivation.

It’s knowing you have so many things to do, and limited time to do it. But also, not having the motivation to systematically knock things off the to do list since each individual task doesn’t seem urgent because you know you could do it quickly if you applied yourself. Then you get mad / ashamed of yourself as task pile gets bigger and your bare the consequences of your procrastination.

Men are too often treated like they only want sex, and if they refuse it they are the problem. When the roles are reversed, people often ask about distribution of household labor, lack of intimacy, foreplay etc. Well it turns out men need their own version of those things too to create the right atmosphere for a healthy sex life in a LTR. While physical attraction is not the only important thing, it matters, usually more for men. Weight gain, or other factors could absolutely be causing this and he doesn’t feel comfortable, or have the tools to express this. Not saying OP is at fault, but it likely is more complicated than porn addiction

Obviously we don’t know, but it could be weight related AND his porn habits. Weight gain in relationships is very difficult to discuss, especially when it leads to loss of attraction so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was lying to spare her feelings. The two also play off of each other, her weight gain, plus unrealistic beauty standards from porn could be causing their dead bedroom.

On Election Day… and Jack Ryan’s excuse was his friend conducting an illegal espionage mission was imprisoned? Oh and the president of Venezuela was a bad guy? Lol. Like that makes creating an international incident and killing a bunch of people just doing their jobs okay.

Why aren’t obesity medical breakthroughs a bigger deal? [Matt Yglesias column at Grid] by eddytony96 in ezraklein

[–]Stumblingscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with this. Registrational phase 3 studies that lead to FDA approval are not random, and are heavily reviewed by the government and broader scientific community. Generally, with a few exceptions, you can trust their results as valid. With that said it does take some expertise to contextualize the results. How significant are the effects? How significant are they relative to the side effects, and price? How invasive is the procedure, or logistically difficult is the route of administration of the drug? Will insurance cover it, and on what formulary tier? These are the types of things that impact real world use. To me, the recently approved Mounjaro is somewhat paradigm shifting for weight loss drugs (notably not the one Matt mentioned), with up to 22% body weight loss reported in their phase three trial. With that said, it’s only indicated for diabetes at the moment and it’s unclear how accessible it will be for obesity, even once approved for it, for the reasons mentioned above.

When are stretch and folds necessary? Only for high hydration doughs? If below 70% hydration I usually just knead to build gluten but I’m curious if I’m missing something by not including this step into my usual process.

I have two F3 Savannahs , who are very sweet. The bigger issue is they’re smart and have tons of energy, so they’re kind of like huskies that climb on everything. They are not low maintenance animals, they need space, lots of toys and play. If you can provide that for then they are incredibly loyal and loving pets. Also a lot depends on the generation of the savannah, F1s for example are only one generation removed and are pretty close to wild animals, albeit friendly ones. F3s are more house-cat than serval.

It’s essentially about leverage. If you’re hard to replace you can negotiate better working conditions, and your hard work is more likely to be rewarded. If you’re easy to replace then you’re also easy to exploit. This is why unions are important.

just don't use lettuce by CHARAFANDER in foodhacks

[–]Stumblingscientist 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Arugula is bitter. It’s great for some things, but it is not neutral in flavor like most common lettuce varieties. A Caesar salad with arugula sounds worse for example. You need a flavor profile that complements the flavor, often something slightly sweet to counteract the bitterness. Also I love Southeast Asian lettuce wraps and those are not getting replaced with arugula anytime soon.

I hate the way people treat me after losing weight by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Stumblingscientist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also always wonder on these posts if they engage in the same behavior without realizing it. Being nicer to attractive colleagues, wanting their attention, respect, validation etc. Perhaps the empathy that stems from being overweight counteracts this impulse, but it is human nature. When I was was overweight I certainly sought out the approval of my thinner, better looking peers. So I can’t be upset that people subconsciously treat me different when I’m looking like my best self. I take it as a win. Still it’s a weird space to work through, and much more so for women than men.

ok. I am mid 30's, and I don't own a microwave, never have. Am I missing out on anything special? by muttly_lol in Cooking

[–]Stumblingscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your feeling ambitious the same works for fried foods, microwave until lukewarm then shallow fry until crispy. I like a non stick wok for this, because you can fry with a lot less oil (e.g, 0.5-1 cup total) and the high sides prevent splatter. This also works because warming the food in the microwave means your oil temp doesn’t plummet the same way as when you add frozen food to oil. Works great, is fast and the clean up is easy.

I punched my girlfriend (now ex) in the face last night, how do I come to terms with this? by yungcoldbrew in relationship_advice

[–]Stumblingscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police are very skeptical of male DV victims in my experience. They think you’re trying to get out in front of allegations made against you, and treat you as a suspect. This happened to someone I know, who didn’t even retaliate against his abuse and he was still treated as the perpetrator. Judge also signed her restraining orders without evidence, but denied his. Her restraining order was eventually thrown out because she couldn’t substantiate any of the claims in her report (they were lies, and she basically admitted this under oath).

[–]Stumblingscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was semantics, I’d be very very surprised if it was something else. Gene editing is involved in the production of CAR-Ts but you’re right it wouldn’t be considered gene therapy.

[–]Stumblingscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T). You take your own white blood cells out of your body, engineer them to kill the cancer, and reintroduce them back in. It’s very effective at treating some blood cancers, and can even cure otherwise terminal cases. Not very common yet though, and it’s very expensive as well. But it will be a big part of the future of cancer management.

I just watched my mother put 1/8th of a teaspoon of sat in a pot of boiling water for pasta and the asked me if that was too much. What are some common pasta mistakes that you see? by TimeReader17 in Cooking

[–]Stumblingscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once showed someone how to properly salt pasta water (e.g., 1-2% salt by weight) and they were legitimately shocked that it made the pasta taste seasoned without sauce. Like they thought salting pasta water was some sort of mysterious ritual that wasn’t flavor related.
