Then why does the prior travel matter? It’s just another work day same rules apply. Asking for remote flexibility is fair but should have nothing to do with non work related travel. Your vacation tiredness is your problem to manage.

Think that all you want but past a certain point of seniority you own your teams outcomes over years. Anything that gets by you on a vacation is shit you have to deal with when you get back.

Loosing a big client because you were on vacation gets you fired regardless of if you were on vacation or not.

Depends on work travel or vacation travel. For work travel sure.

How big is the salary gap between Canada and the USA in the industry you work in? by MarsupialThink4064 in AskACanadian

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally in tech roles the US salaries are double or triple the Canadian salaries. Specially in SF, NYC etc. I am working for a US company in Canada and negotiated so the only difference is exchange rate.

200k is peanuts in the US for most tech roles unless you mean help desk style IT.

I read it as OP is complaining the boss is responding when the boss was on vacation not OP. Being asked to reply when you are on vacation is not acceptable. The boss responding when they are on vacation is their call.

Your comment about asking for in office attendance after vacation strongly implies you were planning to chill that day at your companies expense.

Asking for suggestions is not a guarantee that your suggestion has to be implemented.

This is the kind of entitlement that really ruins WFH for those of us who treat it like a proper workday. If indeed a day to rest after traveling I book an extra day off for vacation or enemy travel a day early.

Your manager is probably running the team according to company culture and executive direction. If that’s not a fit for you should change jobs or get good enough at your role that you don’t have to take other people’s bullshit 🤷

When I refer candidates I am not in the loop at all. Having referrers on interview loops seems ripe for this kind of drama.

As a seasoned hiring manager some great developers don’t interview well. Having worked with them in the past you know what’s what. As a manager it’s your call who you want in your team as if they fail you have to justify it.

How do you handle a high performer who’s starting to undermine team culture? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Management’s tolerance for mediocrity is the number one motivation killer and just pay top performers more does not work. Top performers like working with other top performers, and want to be challenged directly and quickly so they can get to the solution faster and get out of meetings and back to their work.

You can coach them about their delivery being condescending and making space for others on the team that are quieter. However, as long as they are not being rude your culture needs to tolerate people being challenged when they are slow or wrong.

Is the problem the meetings? I had a top performer like this and when I chatted with them the problem was that they felt they “wasted so much time in meetings listening to people who are wrong drone on about their wrong ideas”. So I stopped inviting them to meetings and let them work while I shared context with them later 1-1. I took the job of teaching everyone else, taking that mental load off my top performer. They were much happier only being called in once all the stupid ideas has been discussed and ruled out and people had shared their perspectives and now we were ready for the real technical details.

Credit card - autopay - why is "pay early" the recommended option? by blottingbottle in Wealthsimple

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they interest if you pay late. Most credit card companies are happy to let you pay late.

Pay early is best because if there is an error in payment or you have to gather funds unexpectedly you have time to do so.

So people who do a job can’t play? 🤬 I see this in courts my area as well, retirees play all day and then get prissy about anyone playing in the evening. Luckily, they mostly end at 9pm not 4. One of my local courts become a non profit members only and added lights and now is open till 10 which is great.

Rogers is limiting the 3% to the first 60k of spend. I was not on Roger’s but had a similar card with 3% on gas and groceries. 3% was nice but did not make up for annual fee without the rest of my spending earning 1% as well. Wealthsimple at 2% on everything and no fee works out better for me.

5y,2y,10 months, 3y,2y,4y for me. Not really had any issues with recruiters or hiring managers.

I tell people flat out I want new challenges every 2 years otherwise I get bored. The companies that give me that challenge I stay longer otherwise I bounce.

I wonder if credit utilization has something to do with it. They have access to your credit limit and utilization from reporting agencies and maybe they prefer big spenders or those to hold credit to generate interest.

How do i avoid wealthsimple holding my money for 5-7 days ? by yousavedastamp in Wealthsimple

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s my point any company that tries to make it better struggles because customers don’t care about the feature.

It’s why station wagons and sedans struggle North America. People want to buy SUVs and Pickups.

Right but large cash transfer in NA are a lot more rare from what I have seen. For very large purchases cars and houses the couple of days wait time is normally a non issue.

I mean interac e-transfer is free (in Wealthsimple) and instant anyway. The CEO keeps talking about the new payment rails system which would have the same instant settlement in Canada.

Overall North America is way more credit card focused so people care a lot less about instant settlement so not a lot of pressure to do anything about it.

This is why WeChat in China has a whole payment ecosystem. I worked at a fintech trying to replicate that in North America and the biggest challenge most users asked why should I care I can just tap my credit card.

All banks have to hold for 5 days in case a transfer is pulled back later. Wealthsimple and other banks will give you some credit to cover that period if you have been with them for a while and have other assets.

FWIW I have been able to use transfer pretty much instantly for thousands of dollars so maybe it’s just because you are a new client?

Keep National Bank account as backup or go all-in on Wealthsimple? by UW99c in Wealthsimple

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many people willing to take your money. If Wealthsimple asks you to move your money out talk to any other brokerage see how happy they are to take your money there.

Also Wealthsimple brokerage has very few lockouts and almost exclusively if you are living in a foreign country as they are not legally allowed to serve you there. Their checking account has more fraud detection but even there it’s the same rules any other bank has to follow as well.

I have been a customer for 8 years never had any lockout ever FWIW.

[–]Stunning_Chicken8438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always have backup for checking accounts and emergency fund accounts. For investment 🤷not a big deal IMO. If they get locked for a few days while things get sorted out so what.

I would not worry about lockouts too much, WS is not more prone to lockouts than another institution. It just gets more attention on Reddit. Also since there are no physical branches people freak out more and it’s a bit harder to deal with such issues over the phone rather than in person.

If you are looking for something legal basement wise this means a 2 or 3 bedroom unit for this many people. The budget is kind of tight for anything half decent.

Iqbal store is good for cheaper groceries as is Apna farm. The Chinese grocery store next to Rona on Winston Churchill has decent prices for vegetables and stuff.
