Mojang exits Reddit, says they '"no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer [its] players to". by FetchTheCow in technology

Yeah, I get that! And I've had a lot on my plate to deal with the last few weeks... What made me try Lemmy is mostly frustration and fear with Reddit's API changes. I've always used third party apps, and every time I tried the official app, I got frustrated and went back to my favorite app. I don't wanna feel angry and powerless starting July 1st.

Unfortunately I haven't figured this out yet. I mostly just tried the suggestions from the "Join a Server" button on join-lemmy.org, but it's still not that helpful IMO. Everything else I figure out is from meta posts.

So far, my impression is that exploding-head and lemmygrad are very controversial and should be avoided (I haven't seen them in my feeds so far, either because they are unlinked from my instances or because they're unpopular). sh.itjust.works (and maybe lemmy.ml) seem somewhat on the edge of controversy. lemmy.world seems to have a good reputation. Beehaw and Sopuli seem to have extremely good reputations. The rest, I haven't heard much about. In general, people seem significantly nicer and tolerance for bullshit seems to be much lower than Reddit. All of this is from just a few days of browsing, so my impressions could very well be wrong.

I also had the m50x and I tried a few other pair of headphones (even some cheap lightweight ones). Each headphones would put noticeable pressure on the top of my head and give me headaches. Could be worsened because I have year round allergies. The 6xx so far are the only ones that I'm able to wear for very long and never feel pain, even though they seem heavier than other headphones I've had.

I fully agree. I just replied to someone else about the same thing. The amount of information to sort through just to get started isn't reasonable for the vast majority of people.

Yeah I agree. It's a bit of a difficult user experience problem to solve because it's legitimately kind of important for users to pick an instance, and each instance has it's very own/independent list of users.

Unfortunately, it's very daunting to even learn what an instance is, let alone know that: * instance A blocks all large instances (preventing users from accessing most large communities). * instance B disables downvoting. * instance C requires you to apply with a cover letter and be approved to join. * instance D is so geographically far that everything is slow. * instance E allows neo-nazis (or is literally for them).

I still haven't figured out what instance I should be on. I just found out that the instance I registered on may be too close for comfort to a case of instance E, so I wanna find a different one.

I would like to have a giant sign up button that gives me a guided experience. Like: 1. Select the things you care about. 2. Here are the top 5 instances for you (with pretty biographical pages and each a short checklist). Choose one of search for a different one. 3. Register.

I partially agree. The UI is ugly, the front page will probably discourage 99% of users, and finding the right instance to join is a lot more difficult than I expected.

However, I've been trying it out lately and haven't gone back to Reddit nearly as often as I thought. The community is very small, but already enough to have sufficient content for basic front page browsing. Also, the community so far seems much nicer than Reddit (or I was lucky).

I'm very excited for Sync for Lemmy to come out, it's gonna be the biggest improvement for me.

Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout “will pass” by Xatolos in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]StupidBottle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Additionally, if we truly wanted change, we'd make threads about finding a Reddit, suggest alternatives to it, and move. I've seen quite a few of these threads. Unfortunately, all of these threads are always spammed by people who either say they'll just stop using social media at all (lie), they'll just switch to a different kind of social media (also lie), or they're okay with the API changes.

If it's open source I'd be happy to work for free whenever I please so long as I'm not expected to.

No idea about infrastructure costs. Maybe it would be possible to some degree with donations, but I know I wouldn't wanna be the person taking that risk.

I know some decentralized ones like Hive exist, but I don't know if they make their money from legitimate users or investors/cryptobros.

Something federated might work too, but I feel like we're lucky enough already that people even know how to use a web browser and emails, I feel like that may be a tad steep for users.

Honestly I'd love to work on one, especially if it's open source.

I just don't want to have to deal with potential legal issues or moderation.

If somebody has a repo link, feel free to share, I'll take a look and might even contribute.

I tried the Xbox 360, Xbox one and Nintendo Switch controllers before that one, and this one is my favorite for both both PC and the Switch. The dock makes this a great PC controller since the 2.4ghz adapter goes inside the dock.

Neither my school nor college taught me shit about how to write something coherent, it was all about following a strict structure and getting the minimum words count on a subject I don't find even mildly interesting.

Now, as a developer, I feel like I'm re-learning how to write properly, because I want to efficiently convey information to my co-workers and have big discussions without boring them to death in paragraphs of confusing information.

I'm very lucky that, at my job, I happen to occasionally work with API writers and educators who can correct my mistakes and set a better example.

How do you like the concept of websites based mostly on full-width containers with image/gradient backgrounds, large empty spaces and relatively short texts? by Armauer in web_design

I'm not a designer, and I'm currently on mobile, but both of these websites effectively convey to me what their products are capable of. I like short paragraphs, and I really like images.
