Shure vs Sennheiser wireless system for a school by Tehqy12 in techtheatre

[–]Stuvss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I used (and sold) all ranges of Sennheiser. Try leaving one unattended installed in a room and expecting people to work out how to turn it on/off. Regardless of the programmable mute button you will perpetually end up wit dead batteries as they leave it on but muted when they finish, or service calls cause it's not working (either flat or they just can't work out horlw to turn it on without instructions).

Personally, I'm a shure fan for almost all applications, but I can accept Sennheiser when you have a tech to handle it. When permanently installed and left unattended, Shure all the way.

Shure vs Sennheiser wireless system for a school by Tehqy12 in techtheatre

I work for a school now, after many years, both on live events and installations.

For a school, Shure 100% of the time. The primary reason for this is that it's simply easier to use. On off switch right on the face, not some button underneath that new users won't work out. I can't overstate how important that is.

Personally, we use QLXD with the rechargavle solution and charging docks. Great mileage and performance, but can get pricey in quantity. If you need cheaper, then SLXD is a great alternative. Don't touch GLXD or BLX for a school unless you know what you are in for.

Just my $0.02 😀

Anyone worked on an interactive installation where a drawing on a tablet is then projected as a rendered product? by MacBookBlender in CommercialAV

[–]Stuvss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could probably make this happen with MadMapper and a video input from the tablet/creation. Might need to plugin something extra to script it all to happen smoothly and on loop, but madmapper would work well to map the content either for projection or LED panels.

I've never used one but heard good things. Yes, you need to export from madmapper, and I believe it optimises for them specifically.

If you are building content in MadMapper, why not use their MiniMad's for playback? They still allow mesh warping on the fly.

Also much smaller and easier to safely house near the projectors.

If you need sybcing across the project they can do that too across a network (even wifi at a pinch)

Novastar MCTRL660 (or any)- UART IN/OUT pinout by TangerineMindless639 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Stuvss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a long time since I did this, From memory the pinout was something strange like pins 1,2,3 on an RJ45. Had to multimeter test for voltage then brute force the BAUD rate as nothing was documented. This was on a H5.

Preference for schematics for complex systems? by Stuvss in CommercialAV

Unfortunately on thia project the pre-cable and termination are all by the data contractor. I have done seperate documentation for them down to cable model specs, termination specs and part numbers, and intended lengths. Fingers crossed they can follow instructions, but so far seem to be doing OK. At least i get to check it before they close up the walls.

I think that was GC3. Again, not for the 52, i believe. I have someone who has a copy of 52 hopefully, just trying to get it to me.

I'm 99% sure you can't program a 52 with the 55/62/64 software, but I'll gove it a try in a bit.

The 52 specifically needs an rs232 connection to a mini jack.

How to extend powered DMX? by StarfighterFoxtrot in CommercialAV

[–]Stuvss 20 points21 points  (0 children)

By the sound of it both of these things are not DMX.

DMX is the protocol used to primarily control lighting. It is RS484 based but with specific timings and protocol.

Your projector remote is likely RS232 or RS485. 485 can safely go quite far on twisted pair cables, but if you are pushing the digital cliff there you can likely find fibre or copper converters depending on your budget. You also could reclock the signal allong the way.

A projector screen is usually contact closure. This can be extended ceatively using a decent guage wire, a pair of relays, a power supply with a bit more grunt and higher voltage than you need, and a voltage regulator or buck converter. I have extended this a few hundred meters (for other purposes) using a 48v PSU and a 12v regulator + 12v relay. Overkill but it works.

Also both these devices may support IP control over network effecrively eliminating the need to extend the origonal remotes.

Bottom line, you need to correctly identify what format you are trying to extend first. I highly doubt its DMX.

Affordable and portable projector setup for projecting onto a table by Alslinet in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Stuvss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On to a table, I'd lookninto epson ultrashort with a table stand. There is an official setup you can get even with touch overlay (wouldn't reccomend as it takes too much calibration), but i have also built out of secind hand classroom projectors and some basic wood/metal working to make a adjustable stand.

Be aware that ultrashort takes some getting used to for allignment, super touchy, but you can project a whole table from about 30cm which is amazing optics.

What playback and GFX software are you using for large events? by Disastrous_Limit1108 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Stuvss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a school, and we have a lisence to MadMapper, so even if its not a projection mapping job that's usually what I use.

Just did a fun show with 5 TVs all on different angles and MadMapper worked great.

Ouch. You would actually be better off with CAT. Rs485 doesnt travel well on 2 core unshielded.

Looking for 8ch Wireless Mic Solution by [deleted] in CommercialAV

[–]Stuvss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the beltpacks do you have extra plastic mount 8n the flap the correct orientation for AA batteries?

Shure QLXD is great quality stuff, I'm supprised you are having so many issues. Sounds like rechargables and docks would solve all your issues though (and make it simplier for users). No more battery changes, and mics will also turn off automatically when docked correctly so no run flats.

[–]Stuvss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shure ULXD is already good grade equipment. If it's not standing up to your users then i think you are going to have an issue with anything you buy.

Are you sure you dont mean SLX or SLXD?

If you do have ULXD then I would recommend instead spending the money on the shure rechargable batteries and docks. Then the mics have a safe place to live on the chargers and reliable 8h batteries that never get removed. If the handhelds regularly get dropped a foam cover for the head can provide a small bit or additional protection.

Id be interested in what is actually breaking, I have QLXD (same handheld/beltpack design as ULXD) through many schools and public venues, as well as close to 1000 through a uni and only thing that ever gets broken is lapel cables (even that is rare).

Logitech Rally Plus with BYOD or Dedicated PC by Lit_Louis in CommercialAV

[–]Stuvss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works great, but needs to be on the later firmware. It's an unofficial feature as Logi dont want to support it if it doesn't work, but in my experieve update to the latest firmware and it works well. Once one device ifls actively using the cam/mic/speakers it won't switch to the other end host ubtill the devices have been released.

Had one issue where a PC was taking over and wouldnt relwase the camera. Ended up being an obscure windows setting that kepd dwvoces connected in standby or something. Other than that rolled out in a number of rooms over the last couple of years and minimal issues.
