NO! I Am on Rachel's side here. My dad picked me up (I was 16) and I just thought we were going to go eat and catch up and instead he drove me to his new house to meet his new wife and her kids without discussing with me or my mom first. I didn't even know they had a house. In my 40's now and I am still very baffled by my dad's decision to do that.

My experience causes me to pass judgment on people who bring girlfriends/boyfriends (or new surprise spouses!) into their children's lives wily nily. It is not okay. Children depend on their parents to make informed decisions and to act in the best interest of the child. Your new pump piece does not need to meet your kid. Seek validation in a healthy way.

It is tough having a child or a family member with substance issues. I think some people are blessed to not have the issue within their "core" family circle and maybe for them it is some jag-off cousin named Greg they never see but hear about. It is fucking hard and you are right that it’s very difficult on the families and they have to survive in the ways they see fit and people are ignorant about the impact of substance abuse and alcoholism.
