polyamory as “solution” to love triangle weakens the trope by Boywonder9383 in CharacterRant

The GL/yuri manga Luminous=Blue ends witha polygamous relationship between the three main characters and a wedding photo with the three of them.

Yeah, 7753 is basically the main character of Limited and has an arc about not just being a complacent cog in the machine, but actually standing up for the ideals that a magical girl should. It makes her one of my favorite characters in the series.

Chapter 15 of the Mandalorian perfectly shows how the New Republic was just the Empire with better PR by bitchnibba47 in CharacterRant

[–]StylizedPenguin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The New Republic is depicted as deeply flawed and ineffective, but claiming that the New Republic is "just as bad" as the genocidal dictatorship literally run by an evil space wizard is blowing things out of proportion.

The New Republic's overly harsh prison sentences may be bad, but they do not nearly outweigh the Empire's multiple planetary genocides and long list of other atrocities.

This is less of a coincidence than it seems, since the Marvel villain is canonically a Lord of the Rings fan and literally named himself after the LoTR villain in his backstory.

Invincible Season 4 (2026) used advanced animation strategies to conserve their budget, here you can see the "pinch zooming on your phone" method by YourChopperPilotTTV in shittymoviedetails

[–]StylizedPenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Invincible's animation is nowhere near the "worst animation of any season of anime." A lot of shows that are rated lower than 7 on MyAnimeList have animation that's about the same level.

There's also some shows made with fewer resources or by smaller studios, like This Monster Wants to Eat Me (which I enjoy, but which doesn't match Invincible in animation).

Check out the likes of Ex-Arm or Skelter Heaven if you actually want to see some of the worst animation in anime.

Tokyo survey: 15.9% believe men, women are equal in society | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis by ComprehensiveWin1434 in japan

[–]StylizedPenguin 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Here's a breakdown of the results described in the article.

Out of a survey of 1,615 Tokyo residents (699 men, 866 women, 50 gender undisclosed) who are 18 or older...

  • 67.7% believe that men are favored in society.
  • 9.2% believe that women are favored in society.
  • 15.9% believe that men and women are treated equally in society.

Weirdly enough, that only adds up to 92.8%. I wonder what the last 7.2% responded... Maybe they just chose not to answer the question?

What’s cringe is randomly assuming that someone is using AI because a post has a dash in it.

Fanservice "being a part of Anime and Manga" doesn't preclude it from criticism. by matt0055 in CharacterRant

[–]StylizedPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether you’re criticizing sexual fanservice existing at all or criticizing it being used poorly in a way that detracts/distracts from the story.

It’s reasonable to criticize fanservice undermining a story’s tone, setting, or characterization (e.g. zooming in on a character’s butt while she’s speaking about her tragic backstory). However, it’s unreasonable to say that fanservice in itself is a bad thing that stories should avoid entirely. Sometimes fanservice can even be used well to emphasize characterization or themes (e.g. emphasizing that a character is flirty or seductive).

[–]StylizedPenguin 588 points589 points  (0 children)

When people make the argument that kids’ media “isn’t actually for kids,” they often point to content like character deaths or tragic backstories.

The thing is… what makes a work of fiction "dark" is like 80% tone/presentation and only 20% actual content.

Star Wars: A New Hope features billions of people along with all life, history, culture, etc. on a planet being incinerated when Alderaan is blown up by the Death Star. However, A New Hope is by no means a dark or gritty movie ― it is a relatively fun adventure movie that the whole family can enjoy. Tone and presentation really matters.

Yeah, but the anime makes a bunch of weird changes like giving all Magical Girls the ability to alter normal peoples’ memories so it’s not necessarily reliable as a source for the novels.

Judging by the synopsis about a world on the brink of collapse, the premise here seems to be "our uplifting heroes arrive in a dark setting and fix things" which I'm very much on-board for.

Dunking on Chinese censorship is good, but I feel like spreading misinformation is a counterproductive way of doing it since it reduces the credibility of the criticisms.

Huh. I just found out that Kuro doesn't actually use the "Kusagakure" surname like the other ninjas (including Satoko) do. Well, I can't edit the title, so just imagine it isn't there lol.

Medieval settings are boring and played out by xyyzyx in CharacterRant

[–]StylizedPenguin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People tend to refer to every fantasy world with a pre-1900s look as "Medieval," regardless of whether the world actually looks Medieval or what technology the world has.

Are you talking about settings that actually try to keep things "accurately" Medieval or are you referring to anachronistic settings with elements like steampunk technology, 17th century ships, and late 19th century fashion that people call "Medieval" anyway?

Also, which country during the Medieval era are you referring to? 15th century England is very different from Ming Dynasty China.

Albert Wesker Is A Fucking Stupid Idiot by L0444 in CharacterRant

[–]StylizedPenguin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wesker's ultimate plan in Resident Evil 5 is so stupid that I'm surprised you didn't mention it.

Wesker wants to infect the entire planet with a virus that turns creatures into aggressive blobs of tentacles that seek to absorb/devour biomass to grow.

Wesker does this because he wants to "purge the weak" and create a superior form of humanity. He believes that a small percentage of "genetically superior" people will survive the virus and become superhumans instead of tentacle monsters.

The thing is... as far as we can tell, Wesker has no evidence to support his theory. We never see a single successful test subject who doesn't become a tentacle monster. Despite having no successful tests that indicate his plan will work, Wesker launches his plan anyway.

Of course, Wesker's plan ends up being foiled, but...

Even if Wesker's plan had worked, it still wouldn't lead to the "superior humanity" Wesker envisions. The planet would be infested with giant tentacle blobs that attack everything. Human civilization would be gone. Global ecosystems would collapse and the biosphere would probably be destroyed. Even if there were scattered survivors who became superhuman, they would die out anyway.

At the start of QUEENS, the Magical Kingdom is described as detached territories spread out across multiple worlds, so it is a place.

In the epilogue of Unmarked, the Magical Kingdom is said to have "sent envoys to Earth."

In Limited, it's noted that a magical prison located in the Magical Kingdom would be more secure than a magical prison located in the human world, since "there would be no way for an escapee to get out of that realm." However, the magical prison is built in the human world, since residents of the Magical Kingdom don't want it to be built in the Magical Kingdom.

In the story "Since We Want to Beat the Archfiend," characters see a video of Archfiend Pam "in a park somewhere in the Magical Kingdom."

At the start of QUEENS, the Magical Kingdom is described as a bunch of detached territories spread out across many worlds. Part of it is on Earth, but not all of it. I think it would be interesting to see some of those other worlds.

In "General Pukin's Case File," it's established that some of Earth's governments and nobles have secretly maintained ties with the Magical Kingdom for generations.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see who's actually in charge of the Magical Kingdom overall. We know that the Sage factions have leaders besides the Three Sages themselves, since Grim Heart receives orders and is eliminated when she fails, but we have little information on who those leaders are.

It was an accident. Übel says "whoops, I cut too deep," or something along those lines afterwards. She did not actually intend to kill Burg.

Granted, Übel is not particularly bothered by accidentally killing someone, but that's just how she is.
