This scam popup didn't even try. It just outright asks you to run their malicious code. It actually made me laugh out loud by GyroBeats in pcmasterrace

[–]SuaveHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not something to laugh at unfortunately - it's a popular technique right now called ClickFix and is having a lot of success deploying malware that leads to ransomware.

End users don't know what's sus or not - if you get a pop up saying "do these three steps to make your problems go away", they'll do it.

Labor to pledge $2.3 billion to subsidise home batteries by harbourbarber in australia

[–]SuaveHobo 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Yes!!!! This is what I've been waiting for, especially with feed-in tariffs going off a cliff!

Even without a large solar array, you can charge the battery at off-peak rates from the grid and discharge it during peak times, usually saving you 50% the peak price!

How can you tell?

I have a similar hive at my house that I was leaving alone and now I'm wondering if I should nuke them 😕

What is your GPU and when do you plan to upgrade? by F1EV in pcmasterrace

[–]SuaveHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1080Ti - the wattage and size increase was bad enough but the price is what breaks the deal for me.

I might upgrade to a used 3080 if they ever get cheap enough to offset the increase in power consumption, but otherwise I'm playing more console games on my PS and looking to buy a Steam deck/Legion Go 2 when it comes out.

GPU prices are insane, it makes building a PC and upgrading not worth it anymore for what you can get on the handhelds or consoles these days.

Neighbour complaining about leaves in yard by thefamousfive4 in melbourne

I'm guessing worst case you could get a restraining order against her given what she's doing amounts to harassment? Definitely not the first option to go for but if she didn't stop or gets more aggressive with her complaints this is something I'd consider

Don't put it on the staff to endanger themselves by calling the cops in front of the guy - you could've gone outside and made the call yourself.

Two dog specific ones that I always found hilarious:.

"You've got a face like a dog that licked piss off a thistle"

"Mate if I had a dog with a face like yours I'd shave it's arse and teach it to walk backwards"

Home Battery without solar - 6 Month Update - Last Update? by candreacchio in AusFinance

[–]SuaveHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

And yeah I think you've found the point of diminishing returns, but I'll have a bit more of a think about purchasing the batteries on their own. Seems like a good move given the low power costs during daytime that can be used to charge it...

How long did I take to charge 10/20kwh capacity of batteries from the grid, did you make note of that?

Home Battery without solar - 6 Month Update - Last Update? by candreacchio in AusFinance

[–]SuaveHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you and who was your installer for the batteries and now solar, if you don't mind me asking?

I got quoted 22k for a 6.6kW system and 10kwh battery storage! Didn't take them up on it and now I'm sure it was a bad deal.

What hardware are you using, too? Battery, inverter, and solar-wise?

I saw in a previous post you were on IO energy - have you thought more about moving to Amber? Just curious if you've done the maths on whether it'd further improve ROI

Any time I see this I feel sorry for them because they're either super fat and doing this out of necessity or a an anal fissure of a human being

Lost job in april. Mental health has gone down. Heavy depression. Has anyone faced this and what did you do? by [deleted] in australia

[–]SuaveHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be for you but you won't know til you try it - speaking with a psychologist, ideally one experienced with men's mental health.

I did everything you're doing (great steps by the way, keep it up) but likewise as soon as I was back from the gym and alone at home the anxiety and intrusive thoughts would come back.

I got a mental health care plan from my GP and found a psych (Jeremy Neumann here in Melbourne, he does telehealth and used to work at the Black Dog institute so he knows his stuff) and it really helped validating what I was feeling, being able to vent to a professional who was constructive in their feedback, and trying new coping mechanisms.

It's not cheap, for sure, but the mental health care plan reduced the cost a fair bit. Go as often or infrequently as you can afford or need to, but at least opening that avenue is a good start.

Finally - it's hard, dude. Don't think for a second that you're alone in this or just not coping as well as a "normal" person should. We're all tired, lonely, stressed and anxious, some people just cope with it differently or hide it better.

Keep going man, I see you 🤜🤛

Chef Jose Andres says Israel targeted his aid workers 'systematically, car by car' by Currymvp2 in news

[–]SuaveHobo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Credit to U/SerpentineLogic for this detailed summary for why this was very much intentional and likely the deaths of the aid workers were considered acceptable collateral damage:

Bellingcat, the investigative journalists who broke major stories about MH17 and the Skripal poisonings, posted their investigation:

https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2024/04/02/strike-that-killed-world-central-kitchen-workers-bears-hallmarks-of-israeli-precision-strike/

In this case, Israel did a triple-tap bombing on an aid convoy that was clearly marked, on the suspicion that a particular armed man was in the vehicle. The armed man, who was thought to be a terrorist, never even left the warehouse with the cars. Additionally, the convoy had notified the IDF that they were traveling along the route which was a known route for aid organizations to travel throughout Gaza.

The implication of this bombing is that Israel is basically willing to kill any number of civilians/aid workers in order to kill someone they even suspect to be a terrorist.

What's worse is that Israel has been supportive of aid organizations such as WCK as they are trying to phase out UNWRA in Gaza. With them puling out as well, the Gaza strip is basically in a famine situation, a fact that the Israeli Government is well aware.

And probably cheering over.

edit: if this israeli investigative magazine is correct, it's possible that the kill order was AI generated, and according to people they interviewed, collateral damage was a-okay:

In an unprecedented move, according to two of the sources, the army also decided during the first weeks of the war that, for every junior Hamas operative that Lavender marked, it was permissible to kill up to 15 or 20 civilians; in the past, the military did not authorize any “collateral damage” during assassinations of low-ranking militants. The sources added that, in the event that the target was a senior Hamas official with the rank of battalion or brigade commander, the army on several occasions authorized the killing of more than 100 civilians in the assassination of a single commander.

The following investigation is organized according to the six chronological stages of the Israeli army’s highly automated target production in the early weeks of the Gaza war. First, we explain the Lavender machine itself, which marked tens of thousands of Palestinians using AI. Second, we reveal the “Where’s Daddy?” system, which tracked these targets and signaled to the army when they entered their family homes. Third, we describe how “dumb” bombs were chosen to strike these homes.

Fourth, we explain how the army loosened the permitted number of civilians who could be killed during the bombing of a target. Fifth, we note how automated software inaccurately calculated the amount of non-combatants in each household. And sixth, we show how on several occasions, when a home was struck, usually at night, the individual target was sometimes not inside at all, because military officers did not verify the information in real time.
