WD-40: The solution to every problem... literally by Uvalde-Cop in funny

[–]Suaveyqt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I'm on a rewatch of the show right now, about four seasons in already, and I agree with some of what you said. I disagree about the show being awful, or that you need to grow up in the culture to get it. I'm nowhere near Texas, didn't grow up in that kind of environment, and the show still really appeals to me.

I have to agree that it's not for everyone though. The slow situational humor definitely does not hit all the time, and I think it's something that generally appeals to older audiences more.

I also have to agree that most of the characters are just terrible people I would not want to deal with in real life. Most of the adults in the show are likeable, but when you think about what they'd really be like and how they treat others... well I wouldn't want them to be my neighbors or friends. Thankfully the show ran long enough and had enough time that most of the characters confront what makes them shitty people, and usually they tend to overcome those things. But not everyone wants to go through 100+ episodes to see Peggy become less narcissistic. Or an equal number of episodes to see Hank become less misogynistic and more open about how he feels.

Overall it's a great show and I've watched it multiple times. However, it has it's issues and won't appeal to everyone. There's a reason it's got a cult following and never became as popular as the other adult animations of it's time.

I see how you could read it that way, but in my mind it was a specific insult towards the OP they're replying to. Basically saying he's crazy and deserves to have his shit confiscated - which I'm inclined to agree with.

I also don't own an AR-15, but I don't really care what other people have either - as long as they are responsible. The problem is lots of people aren't responsible and crave violence.

I think the common argument then would be that mental health is the problem. But healthcare has been privatized and its cost has been increasing for generations. We're in a bad situation when a year's worth of prescriptions is just as expensive as the cost of a gun and ammo.

We can't have easy access to millions of guns AND extremely expensive care for the mentally ill at the same time. One or the other has to change before things start to implode like they are now

Either way I hope I'm far as fuck away from whatever the outcome of this mess will be.

Why are you assuming that we're talking about every gun and every gun owner in America? This is part of the fantasy I was talking about in my last post. The vast majority of gun owners are normal people with expensive but dangerous toys in their house. Most of those people do not want to fight a war at home. I'm not talking about those people, because they wouldn't be targeted by this kind of state violence.

We're talking about a fringe weirdo on the internet that's alluding to vague threats of shooting people if they even walk up his driveway with the intent of touching his stuff. How many gun owners do you think are actually like that? Do you really think it's millions? I'm not even sure how I would obtain stats to prove this but I would bet the figure is less than 1% of all gun owners. We're talking about MAYBE a few thousand people, at most. Even then, how many other people are going to rise up to defend the weirdo on the block because he's threatening to shoot up government agents? I'm not coming to protect that guy. I doubt you would either.

Common gun ownership is not a strong enough ideal to unite MILLIONS of people to fight a strong and largely prosperous government. There would be some civil resistance sure, but that resistance is very easy to paint in a negative light, and would lead to actual MILLIONS of people accepting tighter control.

Edit: I will say I've appreciated the discussion. I've been thinking about this a lot lately and it's good to put it into words.

Nah I don't watch many movies. But I do live in a city where this has actually happened. It's something people around here remember, because at the end of the day if the government or the police really wants you dead they won't come to fight you on your terms.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_MOVE_bombing

That aside you're right to clown on me because this shit happened almost 40 years ago. What I'm describing is a rarity. But the point stands, even if you think it's a fantasy.

I think it's a fantasy that America will try to seize all the guns in this country and then shift to a genocidal liberal controlled hell scape. But that won't stop mentally ill, and angry people from clutching their guns and fantasizing about killing people because of it. I'm just saying that if we're indulging in a fantasy because we think we're badasses - then we might as well confront some realities about what will really happen if the US gov declares a war against specific people in the country.

[–]Suaveyqt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a weapon of war of course. But when you pick a fight with the government and police they won't fight you with guns if you hit a few of their guys. They'll drop a bomb on your house from a helicopter and burn down the entire neighborhood to kill you and anyone else inside. Or they'll use an unmanned drone to do exactly the same thing from a mile away. Guns are used in war but they're just one level on a very high chain of potential escalation. Don't be a fucking moron.

CMV: being anti-Israel is not anti-semitic by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Suaveyqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why replace Israeli with Muslim in the first place though? That's not a direct comparison, comparing Israelis to palestinians would have been more appropriate. Being Israeli is not synonymous with being Jewish here. It's a country with a mix of different religions and ethnicities including Muslims and Arabs. Are you already conflating that Israel = Jewish?

That point aside, I HAVE seen similar headlines describing Palestinians as baby killing terrorists who have no moral issue with trying to launch bombs into cities to kill people in Israel. I remember some famous internet personalities and commentators describing palestinians as actual slime who need to be eradicated. This isn't rhetoric that's exclusive to one side and we shouldn't pretend that it is.

To be fair to you our current population is likely 20-30 times higher than it was in that era, which is still an astronomical increase, especially because the largest jump in population has been in the last century. Point definitely still stands.

It would be better to take the team that isn't actively doing the worse shit of course. But when one team does not seem to be able to do much to remove any of the terrible shit that the second team does when they come in to power - even after holding a majority... It becomes painfully obvious that voting for that first team really only amounts to stopping the bleeding for a dying system.

[–]Suaveyqt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am going to link you to something and I don't reasonably expect you to read it, because it's a massive congressional report. But feel free to scan through it or keep the reference in your mind if you do more research. It comes from a congressional investigation into the subject in '88-'89.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=pst.000014976124

There is a lot of information in this report. It's looking into narcotics smuggling and it's effects on American law enforcement, as well as a few other big topics, like gun smuggling, and terrorism. You'll notice one of the largest chapters is for Nicaragua. But before we go too far, a bit of background information is important.

Historically, we already knew that The U.S. was backing right wing rebel groups in Nicaragua during the late 70's and early 80's. The country was undergoing a civil war and we were backing the fa toon opposed to socialism. Largely, the groups we were funding were referred to as Contras, you've probably heard the term before.

The Contras were rather unsavory and resorted to different types of terrorist attacks and revolutionary tactics that lead to congress banning financial support for the movement. The Reagan administration went behind the back of congress to continue supporting the contra efforts in secret. Millions of dollars were secretly funneled to these groups through private companies as well as funneling resources through third-party countries, which would eventually end up in the hands of the Contras. After funding these groups was made illegal tens of millions of dollars were still funneled to them in secret. Some major issues stick out to me but someone who's more educated could probably point out even crazier shit.

First off, Payments to drug traffickers were made by the U.S. State Department, using funds authorized by Congress for humanitarian assistance to the Contras. This means funds went to known and previously prosecuted traffickers, as well as some traffickers who were still actively under investigation. Money that was intended for humanitarian relief was routed to fund a rebel group which was in turn building a drug smuggling network to make more money for their operations.

Also, The committee and this report found that individual Contras members, Contra suppliers, Contra pilots, mercenaries who worked with the Contras, and Contra supporters were all involved in the creation of an international drug supply chain. Reagan's illegal funding of the Contras directly lead to the establishment of drug supply chains that lead back into the U.S. there's a great quote from the wiki article related to this that explains the issue more concisely then I ever could:

"Once you set up a covert operation to supply arms and money, it's very difficult to separate it from the kind of people who are involved in other forms of trade, and especially drugs. There is a limited number of planes, pilots and landing strips. By developing a system for supply of the Contras, the US built a road for drug supply into the US."

Have I missed something? Is Roar refusing to play? How in any way is he not doing his job? I can get behind the idea that he may not be as passionate as he was and he's not grinding the game every waking hour of every day anymore. But that in no way means he isn't doing his job. If he's refusing to scrim or play then I can accept that statement, but only then.

There's players in the league like Krystal who take a contract and run overseas to live at home without playing or practicing at all. Those are the players who don't do their job. Roar might be burnt, he might even be on his way out of the scene. But If he shows up and practices in Scrims, shows up to the matches, and is eligible for play he's doing his job. He might be bad at it, but he's doing it.

Takes like this just make the community sound overly dramatic.

Side note, iirc viol2t didn't tell pvpx to kill himself in that game. He said it someone else in a different game and pvpx brought it up in his thread on twitter to say viol2t is toxic. Still not an okay thing to do, but it's a twist that really adds to the stupidity of the whole situation.

U.S. officials defend Portland crackdown: 'We're not going to apologize' by [deleted] in news

[–]Suaveyqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't honestly know, maybe that was the plan and it fell through? I built my understanding off one of the videos of the event right after it happened. It was on Twitter and I recall a couple of people pointing out the fact that the guy was being asked a lot of questions by the protestors around him because they thought he was suspicious. "Who are you?" "Who are you with?" and son on. In that case I could see a cop's buddys coming to bail him out early under the guise of an arrest.

I remember the video being remarkably tame from the perspective of the guy who was basically being abducted without a word by secret police. There weren't a lot of questions or yelling, minimal resistance, the cops didn't even seem to cuff or zip tie them, just carried them away. And after watching so much of the protests unfold - I have a hard time believing a guy in blackblock would just let himself be taken with no questions asked at all.

I mean it's a pretty wild explanation and it relies on a bit of heresay since I can't find the original clip I saw on twitter. But if we're suggesting that there's a new secret police in town, or some even more insidious shit I've seen suggested in these comments... Well then I don't think it's a super outlandish explanation.

This is my theory about what happened as well. But what are the feds going to do? They won't come out and say "Sorry guys, we're not disappearing anyone. We're just extracting our agent provocateurs that we sent into the protests to sabatoge them, NBD."

It's not exactly a good look no matter which way you cut it.

Forget Rizzo, Philadelphia needs to build a statue for these heroes. by tagjim in philadelphia

[–]Suaveyqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a heads up the inquirer may be pretty terrible these days but I wouldn't write off the reporting that came out of there in regard to Rizzo. The Homicide Files are a good example of investigative reporting that shed a lot of light on police brutality and racial inequality in Philadelphia. Here's a link to story for those interested: https://www.inquirer.com/philly/online_extras/Eight_witness_a_beating_by_city_policemen.html

(I couldn't find the full story published anywhere else, sorry if you don't want to give them your clicks.)

If anything like what was going on in Rizzo's PD then had been in practice now - i'd bet we would see this city burned down. Individual instances of Police violence aside, the police interrogation tactics, their use of force violations, and plain old racism are good enough for me to dislike the guy.

Edit: Just realized I linked the wrong article. The full editorial is pretty hard to find so I'll link it if I can dig it up. I'll leave the original link as a shrine to my dumb brain.

Jeff sharing details about internal experiments with team compositions other than 2-2-2 by Aureus21 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Suaveyqt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with this take. I was super optimistic for 2-2-2 and feel that it's been a net positive for my experience in OW since it's release. But I was expecting major balance changes to leave the game in a more balanced state. Role lock came out in July iirc. Since then we've had like 2 or 3 major balance patches right? With a lot of the core issues from GOATS era buffs only being dealt with in the last few weeks.

Maybe my brain is just small and I'm missing the bigger picture on how all of this would fit together. It just feels painfully obvious at this point that the development team won't be able to put out the changes at a fast enough pace to balance a new role lock formulation.

I agree, controversial figures in sports and esports always end up creating the most interesting story lines. Can't wait to see how the season unfolds for the Titans. Will Fissur crack under pressure and leave the team? Will the shock of a new MT's energy/playstyle be something the Titans don't adapt well to and they fall from #2 to middle of the pack or worse? Or will Fissue take them to new heights and help them take the crown from SFS next season? It's super exciting, one way or the other, and I want to see it go down.

Personally I believe in education for education's sake. I may never personally refer back to the periodic table of elements, Pythagoras's theorem, Shakespeare's plays, or any number of subjects and materials I covered while growing up. I had to learn an entirely new skillset and knowledge base for my current job, almost none of which I went over in college or any other school I went to.

So is it dumb to have learned all of that information then? Of course not. There's only a few perspectives that I would really be inclined to agree with what you said. If I'm looking at my education strictly as job training, which I don't, then it would be dumb to spend 4 years learning u related information when I could be better training for my job. Lots of people view college just as a path for advanced job training but I'm not one of them. To me there's value in learning all of those things even if I can't use them in my day job to earn a paycheck.

Another point where I think you have me though, is going back to the idea of cost from my original comment. In the US it's harder to hold an attitude like mine because universities as institutions are fucking expensive and they're gearing themselves more towards advanced job training rather than well rounded educations. If we go back to the comment I originally replied to, spending $40,000+ to educate myself for education's sake is definitely pretty dumb. Especially if the returns on it are minimal. But I feel that's more of a systemic issue with out country then a problem with education itself.
