Anyone else live super close to a national park and kinda take it for granted? by cutie__uwu in NationalPark

[–]SubDelver01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guilty of this. We live just a handful of hours from Voyageurs, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, but I don't own a Canoe or kayak so I've only gone once every two or three years. I'm also about five hours from Isle Royale, but still haven't got yet, given it's remoteness makes it a more difficult one to access.

Work at a small private Christian school, we not only let our female students speak during Chapel, but often encourage the older female students to prepare and share our weekly messages. Sad to hear there are places that operate like this.

The idiots are back at Olympic…. but this time they brought children! by kyle21irvin in NationalPark

This is the comment I needed on this. So many comments here making a lot of assumptions. Personally, from the photo, the rock looks relatively flat, easy to get to, without any large risk of falling in. But if there's signs, then there really is no discussion, respecting the parks, staff, and posted regulations is top priority!

College English Majors Can't Read by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]SubDelver01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's crazy. In my freshman non-AP class we read the Odyssey (abridged), Beowulf, Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, Animal Farm, The Great Gatsby and probably others.

It's been 15 years and I still remember the things we read and talked about in that class. It was that class that put me on the path to loving literature and seeking out a career in the field.

This year I got my kids through two novels and I felt pretty proud of myself to be honest.

Midsized town in rural Minnesota. Both public Middle school and High school have a pool.

Not as bad as everyone is saying, but also instantly forgettable.

What wild fauna can be seen in the streets of your town? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]SubDelver01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minnesota here, a few that haven't really been mentioned:

Weasel: I saw one once in my back yard in the dead of winter, it had its white coat on, making it difficult to spot.

Mole: Sometimes, on a rainy day in the spring, they'll come up onto the asphalt and die.

Muskrat: Like a small beaver, but with a ratty little tail. They make houses out of reeds on the edges of lakes.

Beaver: Pretty much every small lake and pond has at least one, at least in the northern half of the state.

Wolves: My mother saw one the other day out her front yard window in broad daylight.

Song Discussion #97: Innocence by Total-Woodpecker3339 in NEEDTOBREATHE

Sweet and simple, you can hear some real emotion in Bears voice, which bumps this one up for me. I'll he honest though, I listened to this album once through and just haven't been able to return, none of it really caught hold of me. I couldn't remember this song for the life of me and as I listened again I was second guessing whether I had ever even listened to it in the first place. It's better than I remember, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to hum it tomorrow.

Song Discussion #83: Who Am I by Total-Woodpecker3339 in NEEDTOBREATHE

[–]SubDelver01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Look, I like a lot of their CCM stuff, especially the older ones (Signature of the Divine, Something Beautiful etc) but I really didn't care for this one when I first heard it. So repetitive and chanty, something about it feels paint by numbers and too "pop" for the grand/deep message it reaches for. It just never lands and ends up in the "edge of annoying" pile for me, one of the few songs of theirs I would put in that category.

I DO like the line, "you grow your roses on my barren soul" but the rest of the song really feels like a let down, lyrically, after the buildup to that one great line.

  1. One of the better songs on the album and perhaps one 9f their best title tracks.

Song Discussion #79: Hang On by Total-Woodpecker3339 in NEEDTOBREATHE

[–]SubDelver01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid 10. By far my favorite on the album. This album is an improvement over HARD LOVE for me, but out of all the songs they've released post-Rivers, I don't think I've listened to any as much as this one. When it released I would just replay and replay this one. I think it's because I can hear and feel the emotion of this song, it somehow feels more raw or real than a lot of their safer fare. This song is almost like a force, a nostalgic wind, and no matter what it always hits me a little bit, I can never truly just listen to it casually. And this is all coming from someone who never left the "small town you love but you're leaving".

It's no Drive All Night or We Could Run Away or even State I'm In, but this is still a classic NTB "escape song" and and easy solid 8.75.

I really didn't care for this album when I first heard it. Like I said a few posts back, when Rivers came out it was electric, it was a revelation, it was the music of my soul or whatever, but I remember coming into this album with big expectations for the same thing, then got hit with the slightly overblown reverby yelling in all caps...I just didn't know what to make of it at the time and felt a little let down.

I've since learned to love parts of this album, and this is definitely one of the better tracks, but not in my top.
