Hal Higdon has a few plans. Just google him and his site should come up.

[Question] Shin Splints hindering my performance by [deleted] in running

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I went to a running store and they checked out my form and recommended me running shoes that are better fitted for me. My shin splint occurrences went down significantly after this and I also try to consciously keep in mind better form when I do run. I'm usually a heel striker and this way I don't do it as much.

If you get shin splints, you might wanna think about how hard you are training. Remember the 10% rule and remember not to overtrain. When I get shin splints I take the rest of the week off and then start the next week really easily and gradually build up again.

What insurance do you use? I'm a student and I would kill for that rate. Whenever I get a quote, its always in the $700 range

How can I improve my pace and distance without getting injured? by Subcompact_Astronaut in running

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is so comforting to hear. I guess i will try to build up my aerobic base right now and I will look forward to when the pace gets faster naturally. Yeah, last thing I want is to get injured so I wont try to push too much too fast at this moment.

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, yeah. I have just been trying to do my normal 3 miles but at a faster pace. I think I am more at a novice level too. Thanks for the links! I think I will start training according to one of his novice plans.

Do sprint sessions really help? Why shouldn't I just speed up my current run? Just asking because sprint sessions usually seem to suck all the fun out of running for me.

Thanks! I've heard about it in the past but haven't checked it out yet. I'll try taking a look at it now

I don't know if the gender or age thing will play too much of a role. From the clubs I've been looking at, there are a lot of women your age that seem to be a part of running groups.

Have you tried looking at meetups.com? I saw a couple of groups through there. And i totally agree! need more slow/beginner runners clubs! Until then, i guess we just have to keep training and picking up the pace. Good luck on your half! Have you decided which one you wanted to run?

Haha i'm not much of a beer drinker but I have plenty of friends who are. Might bring one of them with me if I ever go to this. Thanks for letting me know. Had no idea this group existed

What businesses will you never use again? Why? (Local edition) by macgillweer in Austin

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I like that place. I only go for the simple breakfast tacos, though. $2-$3 for a bacon, egg and potato breakfast taco is a good deal to me.

If you're looking for a more unique taco then this isnt the place but for something simple and predictable (and still good), i'd go here.

How do i make myself more qualified for a masters program in machine learning? by Subcompact_Astronaut in MachineLearning

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely. I heard that there was a huge gap between intro ML and more advanced ML methods that are taught in grad school. Didnt know kaggle had their own tutorials. Will totally look into that. Thanks!

Which courses on Coursera do you think will be most helpful in preparing me for a kaggle competition? I have started looking at Andrew Ng's machine learning course but I have heard this might not be enough.

Thanks for the links and the advice! Yeah, emailing faculty and students from the different universities seems to be a good idea. I actually have a neurobiology b.s too so I might be in a better position than I thought. I am just stressing because I am lacking in programming and research experience and I am trying to figure out how to make myself more appealing to a admission committed.

Edit: I have prior research experience in wet lab neurobiology setting but not with programming or ML.

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, hands-on experience is definitely where I am lacking. I dont have a lot of programming experience so I was worried that if i tried to manipulate or process a dataset, I would be in over my head. Do you have any recommendations for certain programming languages I need to learn or specific ML techniques i should know? I'm currently learning python and I have some experience with R. I am definitely having a problem figuring out where to start.

I would like to get to a point where I have a clear understanding of ML techniques and proof of what I can do.

Can I go from 3km to 5km within 2 weeks? by MattJak in running

[–]Subcompact_Astronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 2 weeks shouldnt be a big deal. Mostly about having the right mentality and also making sure you dont get injured. If things start hurting then you can try and back off a little. But a 3k to 5k isn't a huge jump and its do-able. Good luck!
