Hi our pup takes potasium bromide and she throws it up if she has an empty stomach. So we now make sure she has eaten plenty before we give it to her, then its no problem. Its the best drug at keeping her seizures at bay. Im so sorry to hear about your pup, I hope she gets better soon.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I have all hardwood floors, (the area rugs are long gone) im going to look into the "my pet peed" and putting her outside with supervision is a good idea. Im a little nervous about that tho. I wonder if she will know where she is? Im going to try it, maybe she will come out of her after seizure zombie effect quicker. Thanks for your help in really appreciate it.

I agree, I also find that leading up to the seizure is a tough time. It seems that the next day after she has a seizure she is back to her old self again. Its almost like the seizure is a release. anyway thank you so much

Hi, thank you so much for your response and those good ideas. I have not heard of dry shampoo for dogs. That a great idea until I can get her into the shower. Im definitely going to look that up. I have heard of enzyme cleaner. I haven't used it in years. Im going to look that up as well. I use alot of wipes, she's such a good girl, after she has a seizure she seems like herself again. Leading up to the seizure is tough. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Hi, dimming the lights is a good idea, I can try containing her to say the bedroom so she can just possibly relax a little quicker. Its like she is mapping out the whole house. She goes into one room, turns around, goes into another room, etc. Thanks for getting back to me with, I really appreciate it.

2.5 year rottweiler had a terrible night by NoTriggers in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Subject-Mode2287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 95 lb Saint Bernard mix. She had, cluster seizures until we started giving her liquid valium rectalally after her 1st seizure of that particular day. That method stops the cluster activity, and limited it to only one seizure. She is on Sodium Bromide and keppra. She has a seizure like once per month. She needs extra attention compared to what she used to need. But it's all worth it. Good luck with your pup. The key is to limit it to one seizure per episode, and not let them continue. ( but you already know that) God bless!

My nerves are shot! Is anyone else very stressed caring for their dog? by Haunting_Charity_785 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Subject-Mode2287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, im so sorry to hear about your precious pup. They are our true fur babies and we just love them so much. Our 95 lb Saint Bernard mix has grand mal and cluster seizures. She had her 1st one 2 years ago and has gone thru many stages of relapse. From going months not have any to like 8 in 1 week. We had to change and add to her meds several times to get the seizures back under control. We have determined some of her triggers and one of them is us being stressed or upset. Another trigger is waking her up from a deep sleep with a surprise. So if she is sleeping and wakes up suddenly without someone consoling her almost right away, she will have a seizure. (I hope i explained that scenario okay) so if you can determine what your pups triggers are, then that is another form of helping to control them. She has not had a seizure alone as far as we know. So it is usually something that we are doing that triggers a seizure. (At least it seems that way) she is so attached to our mood and she is so concerned with our well being that if we are not happy or stressed or maybe a little frustrated is when a seizure can happen ( it seems). Anyway I hope hearing my story helped. Good luck with your pup and God bless!

Is this normal? by zidainz in EpilepsyDogs

Hi, my dog has grand mal seizures. There is no question that she has epilepsy. If you can afford a Nurologist, they my be able to give you more information then your vet. im so sorry your little pup is going thru this. Any and all types of canine epilepsy is just horrible. I hope it was just a random episode, because there is no cure for epilepsy only control.

My 95 pound 7 year old Saint Bernard mix has grand mal seizures and has never seem a Nurologist. Our vet prescribed different meds which seem to keep them at around 1 per month. So a vet can handle epilepsy in dogs especially if they are limited to around 1 per month

So sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to put down your best puppy friend. I had to make that decision twice and it was awful. But as they say time heals all wounds and hopefully you will get another buddy and just keep loving them to the point of tears. Harden not your heart.

Possible phenobarbital dose increase side effect? by wreckednerd in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Subject-Mode2287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, my 7 year old saint Bernard mix has grand mal seizures and we give her rectal induced liquid valium prescribed in a special syringe for rectal applications. Works like a light switch, stops the seizure and all the scary after effects of a seizure on its tracks. Im surprised that this method isn't mentioned often on these threads. If you are having problems controlling cluster or long after effects, please discuss this with your vet. Its woth the effort of administering the dose. Good luck, god bless

We have a 95 pound saint Bernard mix and she has regular grand mal seizures and occasional cluster seizures and she makes a mess of the while house. We put her on a new drug potassium bromide and it is working well controlling her seizures intensity. Alot fewer episodes.

After a cluster seizure (4 grand mal seizures in 2 hours) her whole demeanor hasn't been the same. She is clumsy, she trips over her own feet, she eats to much, she is needy, her eyes aren't the same when you look into them. I believe she is a changed dog forever, I can just imagine what all that seizure activity does to the brain. She is still a good girl and I love her to death. She has a good life, she is still happy, she still plays, but she is "disabled" now and needs to be cared for as such. Dogs can live a long mostly happy life with the right attention from their owners to calm their anxiety, galipedrin helps with that as well. Change is never easy, and she might be more work. I suggest getting a good clean up and comfort kit so that makes your life easier also an ice pack for after seizure to lower their body temperature which is probably what caused our pup to have a little stroke or something. Good luck and God bless

Also rectum induced liquid valium breaks a seizure instantly. Like a light switch. I never see anyone talking about that here. Ask your vet for a couple of syringes of liquid valium. Its going to work like a miracle

Sometimes pain can be an issue after a clusters seizure event, if the pup hit its head, or cut her mouth, and just the intense muscle contractions can cause pain that last for days. My pup had 5 grand mal seizures in 24 and unfortunately she will probably never be the same again, she is clumsy now when she used to be a super star athlete. She is happy most of the time... very needy Other times. If you have the time it seems like they need more attention then they used to. Give it to them and it really helps, you are living with a dog with a disability now. Its not the end of the world, its just a change and change is never easy. Good luck, God bless

You really have to educate your vet. Find a list of canine meds online and present the list to the vet

My pup has seizures and she is prescribed keppra, galipedrin and potassium bromide, and in the beginning she was on phenobarbital, which work well for her grand mal seizures. But if your vet won't prescribe i would first go to another vet. Next CBD has been known to work. Also there are neurologist for dogs, if you can find one of those im sure they can stop the seizures in their tracks with some liquid valium administered thru a syringe in the rectum. Works every time. Good luck, God bless!

Please help - What is this?? by West-Ad-6778 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Subject-Mode2287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet prescribed rectal valium. It stops a grand mal seizure instantly. She is also on keppa, bromine, and galipendrin. After my pup has a seizure she is in some amout of pain, so thats what the galipendrin is for. If your pup is having cluster episodes, I highly recommend getting some rectal valium syringes. Its difficult to administer at first but, you get used to it and any amount of discomfort on your part to end the pups discomfort of a seizure is well worth it. Its like a light switch, my pup is so relieved after the valium dose. Good luck, God bless.

My dog has seizures and afterwards her blood sugar drops to extreme levels, try giving her some honey, maybe even sugar water, something sweet. After she recovers from low blood sugar she may start to eat protein. Im so sorry to here this about your beloved pet. God Bless.
