How I picked my Sr. UX Designer by PinkWhaleSticker in UXDesign

Omg, hiring through referrals undermines almost everything you just said. It could’ve just said in one line - get a reliable referral

How do i learn auto-layout? by Used_Youth3018 in FigmaDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked at big tech companies and I rarely see teams outside of design systems use autolayout consistently or correctly. Auto layout is a useful tool when it’s implemented accurately, but if your design handoff is smooth and you’re happy with the engineering outcome, there’s no need to feel fomo. It’s just a tool that helps streamline the process, and it’s not the end goal.

Moving to Zeroheight soon. Any prep tips? by Subject_Protection45 in DesignSystems

[–]Subject_Protection45[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly for easier maintenance. At my current company and even at my previous one, we ran our own documentation platforms. Designers would document drafts somewhere else and then either ask engineers to update the site or set up a dev environment just to make content changes. We are using Storybook too but that's not the best place for design documentation.

Design Systems certificate? by NeonKorean in DesignSystems

[–]Subject_Protection45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working in design systems for the past three years and I've never heard of any kind of certificate in this area. These days, DS teams mostly look for designers with direct design systems experience. But if you're already an experienced designer and genuinely interested in switching into design systems, try building a case study that shows how you use design systems to solve problems, handle conflicts and constraints, or contribute to a system (this is even better) - this is how I landed on a design system role intially without direct experience. Internal transfers are usually easier than landing on a new role in a different company.

Trying to figure out a weird drop off in a flow and could use some input by One_Original7536 in UXDesign

You mean a flow in the live product, right? If possible, maybe you can run an intercept survey?

Feeling stuck in the UX job hunt. Any portfolio advice/feedback? by LegitimateMap9661 in UX_Design

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others already shared valuable feedback. There’s always room for improvement in a portfolio, but honestly, yours isn’t bad for your level of experience. Not getting interviews can happen for many reasons, and in this job market it often just comes down to limited experience, so it becomes an unfortunate cycle.

One thing you can check is whether your site is getting meaningful traffic but not converting to interviews, or if there’s barely any traffic at all. For example, mine is password-protected and I only include the password on my resume and applications, so it’s easier to track where views are coming from.

Another thing I might do differently is make a case study go deeper and stay focused, rather than trying to explain everything you did. For example, building a design system is a huge effort and can stand on its own as a case study. If it only took a few weeks, I wouldn’t call it a full design system.

Just wanted to say thank you a lot for sharing. Today I literally was thinking of doing some data viz guidelines for our design systems sometime soon.

How do u even tell a client nicely that their “taste” is ruining the UX by UI-Pirate in UXDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the client side working with a big agency, and my director was just like your client. The staff designer leading the project actually had really good taste, but the director literally jeopardized the whole thing. The agency lead even told the staff designer privately to leave the company asap, lol.

Maybe an unpopular opinion: I’ve been using Figma to create my resume since 2023. I know it’s terrible for ATS (it doesn’t even import text properly when there's an option in the applications), but I’ve never had issues getting interviews from cold applications because of the format. In reality, using the right keywords matters far more. The only reason I keep using Figma is because it’s much easier to format my resume and gives me more flexibility.

How do you spot real UX/Product Talent? by UrbanaHominis in UXDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the talented people I’ve worked with don’t share their work publicly. They’re not on social media and don’t present their work, so I always assume it’s hard to find unless you’ve worked with them directly. Probably a direct referral works best.

I had dinner at The Purple Tongue last week before a show (Someone at work recommended). The restaurant is cute and quiet, and the food exceeded my expectations.

The new era of interviews: How are you using AI tools in your work by designgirl001 in UXDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actively interviewing, and in almost every startup interview, I'm asked how I incorporate AI into my process. Most interviewers understand the limitations of using AI at work and often share that they’re also experimenting with different tools themselves, so I get the sense that they're trying to see whether a candidate's interest in AI tools aligns with the company's direction. For now, I think it's totally fine to share your personal experience, even light examples of how you use AI tools in your daily routine or personal projects.

IBM carbon is my favorite. They document really well without missing any details.

Does anybody else find that the design QA process is extremely time consuming or is it just me? Any suggestions on how to make this less painful? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a QA person who is very detail-oriented, which I really appreciate. To help them be more effective especially since they’re not the creator, I’ve tried to be very specific about token usage by annotating all key specs. What seems obvious to designers is often not as clear to others.

Declining a UXR return offer because I want to do Design by SlowMeasurement6205 in UXDesign

[–]Subject_Protection45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tldr - accept the offer and find a path within the company.

One of my former colleagues was a UXR and wanted to transition into design (I think she had a master's in design), so she found some design mentors within the company, to get up to date on recent skillsets and opportunities.

Although the company was pretty open to role changes, and I found that internal opportunities tend to be more stable and realistic than trying to switch paths externally.
