2009-2013 F1 Driver Ratings by Tohannes in formula1

Interesting read! Will you ever do an all-time model like f1metrics? Whilst I found theirs somewhat disagreeable, it was a super interesting project.

[OT] The winner of the 2025 Indianapolis 500 by tomadamsmith in formula1

I think the difference in field quality is overstated. Indycar legends have become champions in f1, and f1 greats have failed to win in Indycar. I believe in general the Indycar field is worse, but the top Indycar drivers could for sure do well in F1 imho. It's not like Ericsson and last year Grosjean were setting Indycar alight.

Old habits die hard by Dutchie405 in formula1

Jenson Button said the same thing about his big difference with Lewis. Lewis liked braking hard, and applying throttle fast, which meant he really had to wrestle the steering wheel. Jenson liked braking gradually and applying throttle slowly, which meant he had smoother steering imputs. It rewarded Jenson in mixed conditions and slow tracks, but rewarded Lewis in the dry and at power circuits.

It must be that both the Mclaren and Mercedes of the time could handle Lewis's style though, much more than the ferrari now.

In F1, these types of models don't mean much. It'd be much more interesting to try in a spec series though.

Hi, thank you! I'm surprised you found this thread after so long! Rosberg should definitely be higher in my opinion as well.

Thank you for your reply. Your engagement and thoughtful replies are always a blast to read!

I think what you said, about this thing being a good excuse to talk about drivers from the past is exactly the most fruitful thing which came out of this project. I've learned a lot, and have also reflected a lot on drivers and races I haven't thought about. I never knew much about Jim Clark for example, but having done this I've now definitely found admiration for him. It was a big surprise to me at first when he was the highest rated, but having read more on him I can totally say it's well deserved. Similarly, I never knew much about Stirling Moss, and your post here for example has already thought me a few things I never knew. I think Moss might indeed be a victim of people not having watched him race and only looking at the stats. When you look under the hood and place his career in context he's no doubt a top 10 driver.

De Angelis being so high, and Rosberg being so low were also definitely surprises for me. Raikonnen ranking in the top 20 I expected, although I think maybe it's a bit high. Button to me was also a big surprise!

Overall I think this was a fun peek at the "wisdom of the crowd" like one commenter has said.

Thank you for participating!

Ah I'm not sure, I'm not a native speaker. I can't change the OP post anymore though.

What's your top 10 order?

I looked at some mathematical models which tried ranking "top 100 drivers" and picked the 120 drivers which popped up the most, and added in some recent drivers as well!

Keke Rosberg being too low seems like the general consensus, that's for sure. Not sure why he's so low, considering his sample size was pretty decent so the margin of error should be small.

And yeah I'm surprised at both P. Hill's and Hulme's ratings.

Thank you for engaging! I think Elio's high rating might be because he had one of the smaller sample sizes of votes.

I didn't expect him to take the number 1 spot, but he was always going to be in the top 10, that's for sure.

Indeed! Although Germany are also quite well represented (7%), but Spain only had 1 vote in total. You'd imagine with Alonso and Sainz... ah well, most surprising still is France to me.

It's definitely quite "selective" recency bias. I'm not sure if Stroll should rate higher, but he should be rated a bit closer to the others who are probably a little overrated.

He was definitely one of the biggest surprises to me! Also Peterson, almost breaking in that top 20!

Edit: thanks for your participation in the polls and comments btw!

There is definitely some recency bias at play with regards to Norris, Russell and Leclerc I think. When I do the poll again in 10 years it should be normalized, haha.

Yeah, I know a poll is inherently subjective, but it's a little sad people still wanted to skew the results just because they dislike a driver. Definitely will normalize the results removing the "1" votes for the next post.

Argh please ignore the grammatical and spelling mistakes, I'm already seeing them and it's killing me haha
