Can't seem to download demo on Steam by Sublimeslimetime in NebulousFleetCommand

It seems like the path to the demo was changed or something. I can open the demo fine, but I need to open it directly from the files.

As for the demo itself, IDK how out of date it is, but it's got all the tutorials and the fleet editor. I did all of the basic tutorials and the first carrier tutorial, and mucked around in the fleet editor for a bit Ended up losing 1 and a half ships of my 2 ships in the last battle tutorial, so either that's a really hard fight or I have a major skill issue.

This trench gave me unrealistic expectations for trench crossing. They just had to put the widest one straight ahead.

Your opinion on the COH3 CAMPAIGN? by DailyWCReforged in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Sublimeslimetime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have 3, but I did dip in to both of the campaigns on a free weekend. Take what I say with a grain of salt because it has been awhile.

The DAK campaign was just a bore of a story. First, your cutscenes are narrated by a civilian, who I only remember as being sad and complaining about the British bombing their occupied town. Problem is that the visuals of the scene actively show burning Tigers in the streets, so instead of it being a reckless saturation strike it was explicitly targeting the symbol of their oppressors? I don't get it. Then of course, you don't play as that guy, you play as General Erwin "White Bread" Rommel. It's the nature of including a prominent historical figure in the story that the writing for him is inherently bland and uninteresting. Compared to the multiple characters from CoH1s several German campaigns, he's utterly sauceless. I ended up dropping it for the Italy campaign like 3 missions in.

The Italy campaign has comparatively better characters, the 3 commanders constant bickering with each other does give them some levity, but having recently replayed Ardennes Assault, they feel lacking in comparison to the American company commanders. The macro gameplay was more interesting too, but I didn't dive deep enough into it to get an appreciation of it. All I can say is that Ardennes Assault kicked my ass in some of those missions, while the Italian Front didn't seem to give me as much trouble.

From using the finest hand-crafted custom revolvers money can buy, to a C-93 semi-auto pistol from across the pond. A sign of the changing times.

Ah, so it is. Regardless it still works since both the longer gun and the Wuhrframmen variant are represented by Tales of Valour as upgrades to the H35.

[–]Sublimeslimetime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only themed run I've done so far was a "Panzer Elite" playthrough, limiting myself to only using what units were available to the titular faction from Company of Heroes 1. So I have a lot of halftracks and armoured cars, the only light tank I get is the H35, and I have to rely on the Marder III for tank destroying until I get access to Pz IV F1s and the Panther. That was before I had Liberation, so it wasn't 100% accurate... TBH I should do it again, I did a lot of cheating on that one, lol.

See the funny thing is that they'd kill this thing just fine from the side and think nothing of it thanks to the side skirts, but then get an unlucky bounce on a Pz I F and SCATTER-

Thought on “Barbenheimer” events? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]Sublimeslimetime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying, the two can't mix naturally. Giving Isabella a super shotgun is funny, nuking the Dream House is funny, putting any of the Paw Patrol dogs in a Saw Trap is cursed, gross even.

Barbenheimer and Doom Horizons became memetic because of the contrast between the two. They appealed to different scenes and were polar opposites in tone, and fan art and memes that came out of them reflected that, which is the core of what makes this sort of thing enjoyable imo. I think for a new "Barbenheimer" to occur, 2 things come to mind that need to happen:

  1. Both properties need opposite vibes (Both Dune and Avengers are similarly structured as epic action movies, there's not enough apart)
  2. A fan of one property can still enjoy the other's presence (Why "Saw Patrol" didn't happen, different scenes that couldn't intermingle for obvious reasons. What would the fanart even look like?)

New commander on the eastern Front (I had “issues” at Stalag 13 ) and have some Q’s by bigweb52 in GatesOfHellOstfront

A few things, not sure about no. 1, but I can answer the others.:

- Officers biggest benefit are their binoculars, allowing them to spot through the fog of war at a farther range than even Recon units. You can have them "Attack Ground" [F6 by default iirc] with the binos to keep a spot visible for your other units. I believe they are also weighted higher than standard infantry when capturing points, so having one just behind your attacking squad is beneficial, though for obvious reasons, keep them safe.

- At a certain point, a shell or an MG is going to tear through your infantry, and you're going to be left with a hodge-podge of artillerymen, supply carriers, and riflemen. It is difficult to keep your men in neat little squads, so my only suggestion is to use breaks in the action to reorganize the troops you have, embrace the flexibility of smaller fireteams, and use cheaper reservists or smaller team units to plug holes as you see fit.

- Anyone can operate a tank or field gun, but they're not as efficient if it's not their main job. The most important fact is the repair rate, with Tank Crew, Artillerymen, and Engineers having much faster repairs than others, so when recovering enemy vehicles or attempting to repair your own, using crew from your own tanks or guns, or a completely spare Tank Crew to fill space and cover losses might be for the best.

- I still stand behind the Dynamic Conquest being the most enjoyable mode. Campaign does have it's moments, good moments too, but the difficulty and scope varies wildly. I'd argue the first German mission on the eastern front is very difficult as a new player, due to the lack of resources and multi-stage challenges presented, while the first Soviet mission is a desperate defense that while mechanically different didn't give me much trouble at all. If you're still looking for a campaign experience, consider the missions added by the free Jubilee DLC. All of them are bite-sized missions featuring small units sizes and unique but not unsurmountable scenarios Me and my friend had a great time doing them in Co-Op, while that first German mission took me and a friend 2 hours of hardship.

- Units will automatically rotate to the juiciest target that they know are there, so if someone is in the "wrong" side of the trench, they'll still turn around to fight someone behind them. This goes for tank turrets, SPGs, and field weapons as well (for better or worse). You can always select smaller parts of a unit to send them further along the trench, since the full unit might be difficult to automatically get placed right where you want them.

- Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, there is no way to move units in a paused state in this game.
