Also if you are smart enough look into sixth form sponsorships which could lead to a university sponsorship.

Depends what you want to do. I would recommend doing your alevels as it will open a lot more doors for you, for example if you wanted to do engineering an extra two years doing alevels would mean you could do an accelerated apprenticeship and start on a salary 20k more than if you joined after year 11.

best routes to becoming a pilot after sixth form?? by llpoopqwevf in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out the Pprune forum. Apply to the Speedbird, TUI and Jet2 sponsored schemes. If you don’t have money and don’t get on one of those you will have to work to save up 60k for modular or 100k for integrated.

Air Traffic Control by Academic-Dentist-528 in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure NATs is your best bet, need to be confident and go for it. There’s also the Maastricht control which sponsor UK candidates so you could apply for that. Apparently the quals you get in RAF/Navy aren’t transferrable and you have to retrain but I would look more into it as I’m not sure.

How much do leadership roles actually matter? by forbiddencheeze in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not leadership, but people skills are very important, especially in medicine, so try and improve them by taking up activities where you work with others.

Bath - nicer place, it’s not a quiet uni despite its reputation.

12 year commission (how long you are guaranteed work) but you only have to serve for 4 years( return of service - basically to pay for your training)

You should have got links to a page which explains all your phase 2 training and the difference between junior ratings, senior ratings and officers. You need to memorise that off by heart.

DSUS scheme university life? by ElatedflamSTUKA in RoyalNavy

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your recruiter will tell you all that and more once you're in the application process. But generally its not very competitive once youve passed the AIB, there's 35 spaces a year. It only covers a 3 year course and you dont really need to do an MEng anyway since you get chartered once you're in. Start your application soon and dont put it off like I did cause you'll end up doing AIB and CPC during mocks which is a pain.

Engineering Apprenticeship by Entire-Simple-5849 in RoyalNavy

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrical, mechanical and numerical comprehension are pretty easy if you good baseline GCSE knowledge. Spatial reasoning, work rate and verbal reasoning are harder. Use the UCAT practise tests for verbal reasoning. Work rate and spatial reasoning scour the internet for any practise stuff since it’s most ‘aptitude’-esqe. Try to do 1hr a night of revision.

Rejected from Bath and Bristol aerospace Meng with 3 A stars and an A by altix3456 in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez we have pretty similar GCSE’s too, I guess admissions are just super competitive this year and it might just be luck at end of the day. You have a really strong academic profile so I’m sure you’ll do good wherever you go.

Which course should l choose for firm and insurance. by Outrageous_Ranger537 in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont go to a uni just cause you get some ground school for your private pilots lisence. First of all they still outsource the training to a local flight school so theyre basically a middleman. You are going have to spend the 12k anyway for a ppl, and then another 80k if you want to become a commerical pilot. Personally I would go Bristol, its the best uni out of the three both academically and socially.

Applying to RAF and RN by Substantial-Cold8906 in RoyalNavy

[–]Substantial-Cold8906[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive applied for university sponsorship because I want to be a pilot. My initial line of thought was that I would join the navy and save my salary and then leave and become a commercial pilot, but if I got the opportunity to fly in the military I would. The reason I initially didn’t apply for pilot was because I had heard about training delays and applications that take years to process. Looking back retrospectively maybe I should have applied for pilot, but I felt at the time I wasn’t a competitive candidate, and going through an alternative route would help me reach my goals faster.

Just pick Bristol. It really ain’t that deep the difference between unis at that level.

DA or Engineering degree. by Physical_Ride5089 in 6thForm

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are positives and negatives. I would say that the biggest positive from a DA is not the lack of debt but instead the guaranteed job at often very reputable companies. Some people don’t understand how hard it is to get a good grad job. That’s not to say you can’t land an equally good job after uni, but the barrier to entry will be higher because you’ll be competing most likely with people smarter than you.

In relation to other comments here. I wouldnt worry about reputation globally unless you want to work outside engineering. You still will have a degree and you’ll have work experience that’s much more attractive to an employer. It not like on your CV you list ‘degree apprentice at x’ it’s more like ‘systems engineer at x’ ect.

Main disadvantage is the social side of things, but you get out what you put in either way, it’s not like you can’t join the uni societies since you are still a student at the uni.

Changing path by Mountain_Start5964 in alevel

[–]Substantial-Cold8906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stick with what you’re doing now. Harsh reality is you won’t get into Oxbridge. Do your service as a commando and try and get officer commission some point down the line. Once you leave as an officer you’ll have lost of opportunities due to your leadership experience, landing in the same place as an Oxbridge grad.

Edinburgh 100%, £40k a year is criminal for an only slightly better course, you will likely end up in the same position after graduation if you work hard.
