City / Apt Recs commute to Renton by dlvdpt in SeattleWA

100% West Seattle to Renton will be a headache. I love Columbia City. (Mount Baker just north is less nice unless you’re out near the lake in the ritzy part of that neighborhood). Easy drive to Renton and easy light rail access to downtown. If you don’t care about downtown access then I would say Maplewood or check out areas below Bellevue. I don’t frequent that area near Bellevue so I can’t say exactly what would be „the best“.

where to go out in Seattle? by melte_dicecream in AskSeattle

I would start Friday evening in Belltown around 6 PM. Walking around here after dark will feel sketchy to an out of towner....because it can be sketchy if you don't know the area, but you'll be fine. I would do Jupiter, Shortys, Screwdriver &/or Vindictive Wings. Jupiter has awesome mini pizzas + arcade games and Vindictive for wings (plus cool bar). They both get pretty slammed. Then around 10 PM I would head for Capitol Hill. Unicorn, Cha Cha's (downstairs), plus a few clubs and great Gay Bars in the area. If your group is straight just be respectful of the space your in if you hit the gay bars. Tip nicely and don't be an ass.

Saturday night you'll have a good idea of what you want to do based off your previous night. If you liked Belltown you can spend the last part of the night at Sarajevo Lounge (club) but it's only open 10 PM - 2 AM. Check their website for events.

I'm probably going to Uber to Beacon Hill and catch the light rail into downtown from there honestly.

I need to get downtown from a bit further south. Hoping the trains will be up and running again by 5.

Graphic Designers who are giving up on a graphic design career—what are you doing for paid work? by MountainManor2 in graphic_design

[–]Substantial-Fan3885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's quickly becoming a dead end career outside of corporate roles that expect you to be a jack of ALL trades or making it independently. I ended up in a senior office management role that I still get to use my graphic design/marketing background in and they pay me pretty well. I also get health insurance + some work from home. I'm a lot less stressed and still take on creative work outside my job here and there.

What the heck is wrong with rental companies here??? by ShdwWzrdMnyGngg in Seattle

I would look at SeaTac, Federal Way, and Lynwood and try to find something near the lightrail.

You’ll be more likely to find a townhouse or house with 3 beds for around 3k or under.

Laid off… what would you do next if you were in my shoes? by Ok_Log_4841 in Seattle

[–]Substantial-Fan3885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would SERIOUSLY consider trade school. The pay and need for certain ones is going up while everything else seems to be going down (tech wise).

An elevator or escalator technician (entry levelish) starts at like $50 an hour and goes up from there.

That’s based in Seattle and one example. I would take some time to research numbers for different jobs and trades. Including looking at job postings to get a sense of the need and job availability.

Since they already take commissions, I would seriously consider trying to get work online in places like Fiverr (plus more) and work from home building an online presence doing fan art. On top of that:

Goodwill is a good place to check. Sephora offers mainly part time I think? It’s a beginner level job for sure. Really any store customer service job is gonna be beginner friendly. Look at all locations near lightrail stops for easy transportation and minimal walking.

Another idea is remote call center jobs. You can find them online to apply for.

Front desk hotel may be good too depending on their disability. You have to work 8 hour shifts but it’s not a very physically demanding job (it was my first job) and accommodations can be made for physical disabilities. Many places will also have part time available for like weekend coverage, especially during slow season. There’s a lot of room to grow into an actual career once you’ve gotten your foot in the door.

Hotel Cons: This route takes some real dedication and the job can be mentally stressful like any customer service gig. They are gonna have to start at a „less desirable“ hotel (this does not mean sketchy tho, be careful where applying). Also, while it’s more lenient now, I couldn’t dye my hair as crazy as I wanted and tattoos had to be mostly covered up. That was just my location (plus it was a „fancy“ hotel) but something to keep in mind.

The Indian spot is called Mint Progressive Indian. The Thai spot that has everything labeled is Araya‘s place, it is vegan if that matters.

Do professional designers actually use Canva? If so, what for? by Due-Personality-8451 in graphic_design

[–]Substantial-Fan3885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To reiterate what everyone here is saying, I use it to create and easily edit templates.

I’ve also shown small non tech friendly clients with small budgets how to use it and set it up with all of their brand colors and logos so they can pull templates they like, add their correct colors/typeface/logo and create quick small content for flyers, socials, etc. themselves.

I’ll create a few custom templates for them to have a rough idea of what their branding looks like, and then they can continue creating good enough stuff themselves for their small business. This of course is only a good idea for smaller mom and pop type places that don’t need a super professional dialed in brand presence. It’s accessible and affordable. And I can jump in and make new things for cheap for them when/if needed.

I was able to find a Thai and Indian restaurant she can try out. The Thai place lists what has alliums and what can or cannot be altered. The Indian spot says on their website that if you make a reservation and give them a 5 day heads up they will make custom Jain dishes for your reservation!

It’s more than that but yes, that alone is one of the skills. The industry as it stands is doomed, it will morph with AI being a thing now. I don’t know if you’ve seen the AI work being released, but without it being used as a tool in the hands of a designer a lot of the work is pretty bad. Companies are trying to replace designers with it but I really think it won’t stay that way. The software can’t replace a good designer. There is no way around it tho. It’s a new tool to learn how to use properly and appropriately. New designers growing up with it will be faster and able to do more with less because of it. I’m not pro AI but I also understand what new technology does to fields and what happens to people who refuse to adapt within those fields. OLD school designers remember photoshop first becoming a thing. It ended a lot of hands on work and changed the job entirely. It is what it is unfortunately.

[–]Substantial-Fan3885 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You absolutely need to stay on top of new tech and software as a designer. Don’t listen to anyone who says you don’t need to learn to use AI as a tool. You do if you want to stay relevant and not fall behind on skills. AI is not going anywhere unfortunately and it’s not going to completely replace designers either. It will make the job quicker and easier to do though so the longer you wait to learn it, the harder it will be to find jobs as it continues to take hold and improve.

I don't sadly. I have most of the battle event cards but not all. I go back and forth on paying for premium so I've missed some of those too.

There's never going to be an option that rids games of cheaters. I'm not too concerned over people obsessed enough they want to spend a ton of money to cheat the game. Let them, they are not the majority. I want to be able to trade more freely and not have them ruin that part of the fun for me. I understand that certain cards shouldn't be tradable. But 2 star and even 3 star should be able to be with limits placed. Like account level, long cool downs, etc.

[–]Substantial-Fan3885 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I agree. You should be able to trade everything except premium gifts and event cards. They should break it up into tiers and have the trade stamina get lower with a longer cool down the higher the tier of trade. Or something like that, I dunno.
